    EP. 83: Shaw & Tenney

Shaw & Tenney has been supplying traditional, heirloom quality oars and paddles since 1858. As the second oldest manufacturer of marine products in the U.S., little has changed over those 165 years. In fact, the company has only been owned by three families until this summer when Neil Gutekunst took the reins. A Marine Corps veteran, Neil is not afraid of getting his hands dirty and we talk to him about all things Maine, paddling and most importantly craftsmanship. Listen in!

The Crossing for CF: On Location (West Palm Beach, Fla.)

The Crossing for CF: On Location (West Palm Beach, Fla.)

The CF community is a small one. It’s made up of 40,000 people with the disease in the U.S.  When you add two parents to the mix that’s 80,000 parents, then there are grandparents, siblings, Aunt and Uncles, friends and you get the picture. We have a small, tight knit community.

Laura Bonnell thought it was important that the Bonnell Foundation reach out to volunteer for the Pipers Angels Crossing for CF event.  It was the weekend of June 23rd, 2023.  It’s so important that we support one another.

This podcast playfully shows the camaraderie and strength of our wonderful CF community.

Travis Suit, the Founder of Piper’s Angels is a sweet soul and the father of Piper who has CF.  Recently Travis discovered he has CF (and his two sisters do as well).  In 2017 Travis started the paddle event.  Paddlers start in Bimini, Bahamas, and land on the Beach in West Palm Beach.  It was an incredible evet to witness.

Hats off to everyone who participated.  I have so many new friends and it was great to see people in person, finally.

Thanks to Beth Vanstone (producer) who met me in West Palm Beach from the Toronto area. I could not have done it without you.  We really are very funny in this wonderful podcast (and in general).

Thanks to editor Jon Gay for putting this podcast together as I recorded it in short segments on my iPhone.

    Episode 0072 - KinkWorks

    Episode 0072 - KinkWorks

“How many straps do you get out of a cow?”

We sat down with Jeff from Kink Works, a vendor of quality straps and paddles at Lone Star 2022, to discuss his implements, his process, his wood fetish, and how he recognized us at last year’s party just by Eric’s voice!

This maker shares some of the behind-the-scenes of what it takes to turn a passion for making implements into a full-time career. He discusses a bit about local lumber shops, the leather process, and a lot of his own personal passions and kinks. Shocking, we know!

What are some of the favorite woods to work with for a maker of these highly-polished, and vicious, beauties? The answers may not be what you’d expect.

Never fear, he sold us some of the highest quality implements we’ve played with, and we even came home with more this year!

PPP Episode 42: Leveling Up with Giant Fish founder Scott Darling

PPP Episode 42: Leveling Up with Giant Fish founder Scott Darling

In this podcast I interview Giant Fish founder Scott Darling. Scott launched the initial Giant Fish collection of paddling shorts, pants, and tops in the summer of 2020. Right at the height of the Covid pandemic. Of course it wasn't planned that way, but despite all the obstacles, the product spoke for itself, and quickly became a go to piece of kit for paddlers in the Pacific Northwest. It has been growing steadily from there.

As a long time dealer and huge fan of both Vaikobi and Mocke, I wasn't thrilled to have a new competitor enter the space. But after meeting Scott for the first time in 2021, and talking with paddlers using his gear, I was definitely intrigued. It took another year before I met Scott again, and this time decided to purchase some shorts and a top. I used the Giant Fish shorts, pants, and tops this past fall and have been very impressed.

In the short term, there is probably a negative financial incentive for me to have Scott on the podcast and promote his products. But I do believe that the more creators like Scott who invest their passion, time, and unique skills into the sport, the more it benefits all of us and enables greater overall growth. Starting any new business is incredibly challenging, and the paddling world is no different. I believe we have to all support each other.

Use this link for $20 off any Giant Fish Order (or enter code TCGF20)

I hope you enjoy this podcast as much as I did!

    Episode 0065 - Serenity Theory

    Episode 0065 - Serenity Theory

A vanilla paddle maker? Say what?? Hey. It’s where the money in woodworking seems to be. Can’t blame him.

Yet, kinksters flock to him! Like that alone will make some spankos jealous.

Join us as Sunny and Lizzy interview Richard from Serenity Theory or as the SpankoPodcast refers to him, the lightning paddle guy. He uses cool and dangerous tools to make custom made paddles. So unique and cool. Awesome quality work too! Hope to see him at a vendor fair in the future. Feel free to access his website for amazing paddles!
