Pain: Management or Elimination? Interview with Rick Olderman

We speak of alignment quite often on our show. The term alignment can be used when speaking about the process of manifesting, it can be used when describing living out your purpose and it can be used when speaking about our physical bodies. We live in a fast paced world where acute and chronic pain is simply part of the play. But is it?

    3. Do you think that there is an emotional or spiritual component to the healing process that the pharmaceutical approach to pain misses?

    A Piece of Our Mind
This week we’re highlighting another scientist that is blending art with science.  Dr. Naila Kuhlmann is a Parkinson’s researcher from McGill University that has found an interesting way to include dance in her work, which led to the creation of the Piece of Mind Collective.  She’s also a host of the AMiNDR (A Month in Neurodegenerative Disease Research) Podcast and co-founder of the Green Labs Initiative at McGill.  In the news, we’re talking about Dr. Diem’s trip to the White House, medicinal mollusks, and pollen proliferation.  It’s another instant classic just waiting for you to listen. Your Hosts] James Reed (https://twitter.com/James_Reed3) Steffi Diem (https://twitter.com/SteffiDiem) Jason Organ (https://twitter.com/OrganJM) Our Guest: Naila (https://twitter.com/nailakuhlmann) is a postdoctoral student at McGill, co-supervised by Dr. Stefanie Blain-Moraes and Dr. Aliki Thomas. She obtained her Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of British Columbia, in which she studied the neurobiology of Parkinson's disease in a genetic mouse model. Given a particular interest in dance and circus, Naila dabbled in art-science collaborations throughout her studies, including with Vancouver-based Curiosity Collider and the Convergence Initiative in Montreal. This prompted her to start the Piece of Mind Collective with several enthusiastic, like-minded individuals back in 2018, and to pursue a postdoc in arts-based knowledge translation in 2020. Naila is also co-founder of the "Green Labs Initiative @ McGill", which aims to reduce the environmental impact of research, and a regular host on the "AMiNDR: A Month in Neurodegenerative Disease Research" podcast. The Pain Behind Mental Health Amidst the Pandemic with Lanii Phan and Dr. Paul Christo

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought us stressful and overwhelming challenges to a degree that our level of anxiety and stress have increased. It negatively affects our mental health mainly when we tend to feel more isolated and lonelier due to the sudden health protocol restrictions.

People try to cope with stress even at the simplest level that they can until they get run over and find the wrong solutions. The extreme amount of stress and lack of coping skills has led many to use illegal drugs which caused the rate of substance abuse to increase. This is why being open to health education is needed to put a stop on the continuous pain behind mental health amidst the pandemic.

In this episode, we are joined by Dr. Paul Christo, the author of The Aches and Gains, A Comprehensive Guide to Overcoming Your Pain, as he talks about the uncontrolled and untreated pain people are dealing with and the pharmacological strategies to reduce pain. At the same time, Lanii Phan, the Vice President of Community Health at 360 Clinic, is also here with us to share (her/his) input about the topic.

Keep in mind that mental health is as important as your physical health. So taking care of your mental wellness during this pandemic is crucial and helpful for our well-being. Episode 12 features better ways to reduce pain without the risk of illegal drugs. Listen to learn more!
