Empowering Dads: Involving Fathers in the Journey

Empowering Dads: Involving Fathers in the Journey

This episode concludes my conversation with Scott Mair.

How can dads be more involved in the pregnancy journey and the early stages of their child's life? This is a question we explore. We discuss the importance of engaging both parents from the beginning of the pregnancy, creating a level playing field for open communication, and understanding each other's roles and responsibilities.

Scott also shares his thoughts on supporting both parents' mental health during the perinatal period, the progress made in the UK in providing support for dads,  and the vital role fathers play in their child's life from the very beginning.

If you are a male partner looking for support following a loss of pregnancy, or you are with  a male partner who could benefit from support, the Dads & Miscarriage Facebook community is here to help.

The Early Years, Essential Conversations, Trauma & Intimacy (ft. Jane Honikman)

The Early Years, Essential Conversations, Trauma & Intimacy (ft. Jane Honikman)

This episode features a conversation with my guest, Jane Honikman, M.S.

Jane co-founded Santa Barbara Postpartum Education for Parents (PEP) in 1977. Ten years later in 1987 she founded Postpartum Support International (PSI). Jane has published 5 books, most recently Parental Mental Health: Factoring in Fathers. She and her husband Terry have lived in Santa Barbara since 1970, have 3 married children, and enjoy being grandparents to 8 grandchildren.

In this conversation, Jane sheds some light on how she began her lifelong advocacy for equal parental consideration in the postpartum and mental health space by sharing intimate details of her past and the way that began to shape her. We talk about how having essential conversations about ones past and family history before conceiving and having children can help new parents be more grounded during the difficult days of parenthood. Jane shares a very valuable reframing of how the term "postpartum" should be better thought of and defined, explaining that this term is a lifelong adjective that still applies even in the phase of being grandparents. We conclude with discussing the value of openly talking about what can be difficult topics people experience in parenting as a means to push our society's perception of parenting forward in the right direction.

Oh Look, A Stay At Home Dad!

Oh Look, A Stay At Home Dad!

This week's episode of Parent Tell finds Kaila, a SAHM (stay-at-home-mom), talking with a SAHD (stay-at-home-dad)! Evan is fresh off the SAHD block after 6, yes SIX, years as a stay-at-home-dad to this two kids. As timing would have it, both of Evan's kids are officially in elementary school as of a few weeks ago so Kaila and Evan begin their discussion by marking that huge milestone while Evan also opens up about wondering what might be next for him.

Being the primary caregiver for more than half a decade has given Evan confidence in his role as a SAHD, but that was not always the case. Evan and Kaila talk about how hard and vulnerable it can be to transition from a full fledged career to being the only one in your house all day who doesn't wear diapers. But in between emphasizing how wonderful silence is after a day full of baby noise and overzealous toys, Kaila and Evan openly discuss the importance of taking care of your mental health, finding people in your life who will support you and can relate, and also the fact that being a SAHD is a great way to buck traditional (read: antiquated) domestic gender roles that very much still exist in society and within ourselves in the 21st century.

This episode is surely one that anyone can connect with on multiple levels (I'm not biased at all); take what you need, if anything, from it and just keep parenting and telling about it!
