Ep 39: “Being Agents of Love in the Face of Evil” w/ Rev. Jason Carle
In Episode 39, Micah hosts Rev. Jason Carle—America’s most epic boss on record to have ever supervised Micah Chrisman himself at one point. Jason serves as the pastor of Overland Park Presbyterian Church, where he has dedicated the past 14 years of his ministry. Originally from northern Wisconsin, Rev. Carle's upbringing took an adventurous turn when, at the age of 11, his father, also a Presbyterian pastor, was called to serve as a missionary on the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. The Carle family spent 5 years on the island before returning to the United States and settling in Blue Springs, MO. Today he is happily married to Melissa Carle, and together, they are blessed with two children, Roslyn (17) and Sam (15). In addition to his passion for open and inclusive ministry, Rev. Carle has a penchant for video games and intricate tabletop games with thick rule books. He embraces a wide range of interests, exploring activities often associated with the term "geek," and he takes pleasure in trying his hand at various geeky pursuits.

Is the End in Sight in the Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict?

Is the End in Sight in the Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict?
Alex Gabuev is joined by Tom de Waal, a senior fellow at Carnegie Europe, and Anna Ohanyan, a nonresident senior scholar at Carnegie’s Russia and Eurasia program, to discuss developments in and around the contested region of Nagorno-Karabakh. As the long-running conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh appears to be inching toward a resolution, is the new political reality accepted in Armenia? What does Azeri President Ilham Aliyev hope to achieve? How will the failure of Russian peacekeepers to intervene in recent developments affect the relationship between Moscow and Yerevan? Is the rivalry between competing Western and Russian resolution tracks an asset or a hindrance? And how will an eventual resolution impact on the political systems of Armenia and Azerbaijan?

Russia's peacekeeping mission in Kazakhstan and security demands in Europe

Russia's peacekeeping mission in Kazakhstan and security demands in Europe

In the past two weeks, Russia has demonstrated its capacity to project military power at different corners of its periphery, sending troops to Kazakhstan for a small but symbolic peacekeeping operation and pressing sweeping security demands in Europe, where the West has accused the Kremlin of plotting a war of aggression against Ukraine. The Naked Pravda reviews three essays by political analysts in Russia about the nation’s evolving geopolitics and speaks to two experts about the events in Kazakhstan and changing dialogue between Moscow and Washington.

    Timestamps for this week’s episode:

    • (5:22) Reviewing National Research University Higher School of Economics International Relations deputy director Dmitry Novikov’s January 9, 2022, essay on how many in Moscow already see Joe Biden as a lame duck president.
    • (6:44) Reviewing Russian International Affairs Council director-general Andrey Kortunov’s January 4, 2022, essay about the fundamental “discrepancies” today between Russian and Western worldviews.
    • (9:24) Reviewing PIR-Center consultant Alexander Kolbin’s January 12, 2022, essay on Russia’s struggle against “self-censorship” and fight for a “legitimate basis” for its own “cultural, economic, and military expansion.”
    • (13:09) EurasiaNet Central Asia editor Peter Leonard answers questions about the CSTO peacekeeping mission in Kazakhstan and about how the nation’s political system compares to Russia’s.
    • (25:44) Russia in Global Affairs editor-in-chief Fyodor Lukyanov discusses the logic behind Moscow’s grievances in Europe and the tensions still escalating in Ukraine.

4-17 Laugh, Cry, or Scream (Blessed Are Those Who Are Persecuted)

4-17 Laugh, Cry, or Scream (Blessed Are Those Who Are Persecuted)

Why is it that wherever the church is most radically committed to the Jesus way, there is the most persecution?

Steve describes the persecution of several missionaries around the world that he has relationship with. He contrasts this to the “persecution” of being teased or passed over for a promotion in America. This puts everything into perspective.

4-16 No Justice, No Peace (Blessed are the Peacemakers part 2)

4-16 No Justice, No Peace (Blessed are the Peacemakers part 2)

4-15 A Divine Work (Blessed are the Peacemakers)

Steve teaches us to view peacemaking as the reflection and expression of the reality of Christ Himself.

The Nagorno-Karabakh truce: What to expect in the years that follow a bloody six-week war

The Nagorno-Karabakh truce: What to expect in the years that follow a bloody six-week war

A six-week war in Nagorno-Karabakh has ended disastrously for Armenia. Judging by the map, the situation on the ground will revert mostly to the conditions in place before Yerevan’s 1991 war with Baku, leaving Azerbaijani artillery perched just outside the breakaway republic’s capital city and the 50,000 souls who call it home. The big difference this time around is the presence of Russian peacekeepers — about 2,000 of them — who will be there to monitor a Kremlin-brokered truce. Not formally part of the trilateral settlement but still very much involved in the conflict is Turkey, which is expected to field its own monitors in Azerbaijan, albeit outside the Karabakh region.

For a better understanding of the violence that took place in this area since late September, and to explore what it means to have won or lost in this war, “The Naked Pravda” turned to three experts:

    • (3:15) Neil Hauer, a Canadian journalist based in the Caucasus who's reported extensively on conflicts in Georgia, Syria, and Nagorno-Karabakh, describes the mood now in Armenia and Yerevan’s plans for Karabakh’s future.
    • (8:31) Richard Giragosian, the director of the Regional Studies Center (an independent think tank based in Armenia), argues that everyone involved in the six-week war has emerged a loser, in at least some respects.
    • (16:31) Rob Lee, a former Marine engineer officer and a current doctoral student at King’s College London, explains how drones made all the difference in the latest clashes between Armenian and Azerbaijani forces.

Sibling Agitation: A Tool To Raise Peace Makers #059

Sibling Agitation: A Tool To Raise Peace Makers #059

    "You are over the line!"

We all remember agitating our siblings when we were kids (and maybe even now that we are adults). And, all us parents see our kids needling and agitating their sister(s) and brother(s). Our natural inclination is to shut down whatever behavior is creating the strife (and annoying or embarrassing us). However, the best way forward is to help our kids explore what's going in their hearts both when they are being agitated and when they are the agitator.

In this episode we touch on:

    • Power dynamics between siblings: Be aware of them and address them directly.
    • Helping our kids to have grit and to understand that life isn't fair (without being dismissive of their feelings).
    • 80's mom perms (for some reason).
    • The difference between our kids being a peacemaker and being a peacekeeper. Proverbs 12:20: Deceit is in the hearts of those who plot evil, but those who promote peace have joy.
    • Seeking the good of those around us.
    • Also, David butcher's the quote from Dr. Wayne Dyer, "When given the choice between being right and being kind, choose kind."

The Stat of the Week is about washing machines... Portable ones, dual wash ones and extremely expensive ones...

As always, thank you for listening! We hope you enjoy this episode, and if you do please take a moment to share the podcast with a friend who might be encouraged by this conversation or who just needs a good laugh at our expense.
