Harvey Brownstone Interviews Gilbert O’Sullivan, Legendary Singer / Songwriter

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Gilbert O’Sullivan, Legendary Singer / Songwriter

    About Harvey's guest:

Today’s special guest, Gilbert O’Sullivan, is a music superstar.  He was Ireland’s first international pop music star, and he became a global phenomenon in the 70s with his classic hit song, “Alone Again, Naturally”, which stayed at #1 in America for 6 weeks and earned him 3 Grammy Award nominations.

He’s charted 16 top 40 records, including six No. 1 songs.  Some of my favourites are “Nothing Rhymed”, “Clair”, “Get Down”, “Out of the Question”, “Why Oh Why Oh Why”, “What’s in a Kiss”, “So What”, “Tomorrow, Today”, and one of my all-time favourites, his wonderful duet with Peggy Lee, “Can’t Think Straight”.   For over 5 decades he’s been writing hit songs in his signature style.

He's recorded 20 studio albums and released 8 compilation albums.  And he’s been performing sold-out concerts not only in his native Ireland, but throughout the UK and around the world.  Record Mirror Magazine voted him the top UK male singer of 1972, and he’s received 3 Ivor Novello Awards, including "Songwriter of the Year" in 1973.  His 2 most recent albums, entitled “Gilbert O’Sullivan” and “Driven”, have been highly acclaimed by music critics, and they hit the top 20 and the top 30 in the UK charts.   Those 2 albums, along with his 3-CD compilation released last year, entitled, “Gilbert O’Sullivan: The Best Of” have ignited a global renaissance in his career, and a whole new generation of fans around the world are falling in love with his music.

He’s just completed a sold out tour in Japan, AND NOW, he’s returning to the United States over the Thanksgiving weekend for an exclusive 3-city concert tour.

Our guest will be at The Canyon House in Mesa, Arizona on November 22nd.  On November 24, he’ll be performing at the Swedish American Hall in San Francisco.  And on November 25, he’ll be headlining at the legendary Troubadour in West Hollywood, California.

Harvey Brownstone Interviews Singing Legend Peggy Lee’s Granddaughter, Holly Foster Wells

Harvey Brownstone Interviews Singing Legend Peggy Lee’s Granddaughter, Holly Foster Wells

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Singing Legend Peggy Lee’s Granddaughter, Holly Foster Wells

    About Harvey's guest:

One of the most popular features of our show is our “Gone But Not Forgotten” series, celebrating the careers and legacies of the greatest stars who are no longer with us.

Today’s guest, Holly Foster Wells, is descended from show business royalty.  She’s the granddaughter of one of the most popular and beloved music artists of all time: the fabulous Peggy Lee, whose contributions to the world of popular music and jazz were monumental.

Over her 7-decade career, she recorded over 1100 songs and released over 50 albums, with over a hundred top 100 hit singles, including “Somebody Else is Taking My Place”, “Why Don’t You Do Right”, “Golden Earings”, “Riders in the Sky”, “Is That All There Is”, “Lover”, and of course, everybody’s favourite, “Fever”, for which SHE came up with that distinctive arrangement, AND she wrote new lyrics.

As a matter of fact, Peggy Lee was an extraordinary songwriter, who wrote or co-wrote over 270 songs, including her hits “Little Fool”, “What More Can a Woman Do”, “I Don’t Know Enough About You”, “It’s a Good Day”, and “Manana”.  For the Disney movie “Lady and the Tramp”, she co-wrote ALL of the original songs, and she supplied the singing and speaking voices of 4 characters.  She also wrote songs for many other movies, including “Anatomy of a Murder”, “The Jazz Singer”, “The Rawhide Years”, “Johnny Guitar”, “Tom Thumb”, “The Heart is a Lonely Hunter”, “The Russians are Coming, The Russians are Coming”, “Walk, Don’t Run”, and many more.  She appeared in 10 movies including “Stage Door Canteen”, “The Powers Girl”, “Jazz Ball”, “Mr. Music”, “The Jazz Singer”, and my personal favourite, “Pete Kelly’s Blues”, for which she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress, and the Audience Award for Most Promising Female Personality of 1955.

Ms Lee received 13 Grammy Award nominations including 1 win, plus a Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award.  She was the first female recipient of 2 awards from the Songwriters Guild of America: the Aggie Award, for her composing skills, and the President’s Award, for her support of young, emerging songwriters. In 1990 she won the ASCAP Pied Piper Award, and 2 years later she was inducted into the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame.  She received 2 honorary doctorates, a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and in 2020 the ASCAP Foundation established the Annual Peggy Lee Songwriter Award.

Peggy Lee was a creative powerhouse, who directed her life and career on her own terms.  But for her millions of fans, it’s all about her quietly captivating voice, that continues to resonate with audiences of all ages.

Harvey Brownstone Interviews Larry Carlton, Multi-Grammy Award Winning Guitarist

Harvey Brownstone Interviews Larry Carlton, Multi-Grammy Award Winning Guitarist

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Larry Carlton, Multi-Grammy Award Winning Guitarist

    About Harvey's guest:

Today’s special guest, Larry Carlton, is a legendary, 4-time Grammy award winning guitarist whose brilliant musicianship can be heard on thousands of recordings, and on over 100 gold records recorded by the greatest stars of all time, including Barbra Streisand, Peggy Lee, Sammy Davis Jr., Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Olivia Newton-John, Dolly Parton, and dozens more.

His list of milestones in a career spanning over 50 years is staggering.  For over 3 decades, before transitioning completely to a solo artist,  he was one of the most sought-after studio musicians in the recording industry, because he’s equally adept on the electric and acoustic guitar, in every musical genre including pop, jazz, rock, R&B, blues, soul and country. He’s renowned for his unmistakable and often-imitated "sweet" sound, created on his famous Gibson ES-335 electric guitar.

He created his trademark volume pedal technique, prominently featured in his recordings with Joni Mitchell, and with the legendary jazz/rock group “The Crusaders”, with whom he toured until 1976, and performed on 13 of their albums. He was a member of the iconic jazz band, “Four Play”, and recorded 8 albums with them.  His performance on the "Theme from Hill Street Blues" won him a Grammy award.  And he co-wrote the theme for the hit TV sitcom “Who’s the Boss”, and the movie soundtrack for “Against All Odds”.

His guitar work on Steely Dan's classic song, "Kid Charlemagne", was ranked by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the greatest guitar licks of all time.  His solo career has been hugely successful, with over 30 albums and 14 video concerts produced so far.  The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences voted him their most valuable player for 3 consecutive years, and then he was given their highest honour; he was named “player emeritus”.
