    Midweek Mention... Escape to Victory

    Midweek Mention... Escape to Victory

Welcome back to another episode of Bad Dads Film Review! Today, we're tackling an iconic blend of sports drama and wartime heroics with the 1981 classic, Escape to Victory.

Escape to Victory, directed by John Huston, is a film that intriguingly merges the worlds of World War II POW camps with the beautiful game of football (soccer, for our American friends). The movie is set against the backdrop of Nazi-occupied Europe, where a group of Allied prisoners of war (POWs) are roped into playing an exhibition match against the German National Team. However, the stakes are much higher than just the scoreline.

The Plot: A Game for Freedom
The Allied team, led by Colby (Michael Caine), a former professional footballer, and Captain Hatch (Sylvester Stallone), an American officer, quickly realize the match could be a golden opportunity for a daring escape. With the help of the Resistance and some ingenuous planning, the game becomes a thrilling front for one of the most audacious escape plans of the war.

What sets Escape to Victory apart is its unique casting, combining Hollywood heavyweights with footballing legends. Sylvester Stallone and Michael Caine share the screen with Pelé, Bobby Moore, and Osvaldo Ardiles, among others, bringing an unparalleled authenticity to the football sequences. The film is a rare treat that captures the spirit of the game and the intensity of the wartime setting.

At its core, Escape to Victory is a testament to the power of teamwork, resilience, and the indomitable human spirit. It's a film that celebrates the unifying power of sports and the strategic ingenuity required for survival under the most dire circumstances.

So, whether you're a history buff, a football fan, or just in love with classic cinema, Escape to Victory is a compelling watch.

Join us on Bad Dads Film Review as we dive deep into this wartime epic, explore its real-life inspirations, and maybe even share a few of our own moments of sporting glory (or lack thereof). It’s time to lace up, strategize, and play for the ultimate prize: freedom. 🎬⚽👨‍👧‍👦🍿

We've unfortunately begun the new year with some sad news - one of the finest proponents of sportsmanship and leadership, the Brazilian legend Pelé, has sadly departed our world.

In this episode, Rob reflects upon the life of a man who brought heroism back to the playing fields and showed the meaning of dedication, hard work and what it means to lead.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • It doesn't matter about the possessions we accrue through life. Life only really means anything if we build and nurture relationships with others.
    • Pelé created magic on the field. He produced moments that will live forever in the minds of all football fans, and was part of the most legendary team in history.
    • Pelé's achievements stretch far beyond the fringes of the pitch. He inspired hope and dreams in aspiring players the world over, regardless of background, and was undoubtedly indirectly responsible for the game we love today.

    BEST MOMENTS

    'It's our relationships that's important'

'There is only one "greatest", and that is Pelé'

'I never lost that love for that 1970 Brazilian team'

    The Ten Hag Time-Out

    The Ten Hag Time-Out

Happy New Year DITBoxers!!! In the weirdest week of football, in the weirdest limbo week of the year, Kelly and Gordon make it even more difficult for you by only talking about the weekend fixtures.  If you can remember way back to 2022 the games that took place on the weekend of the new year, we saw plenty of action, plenty of goals, and, of course, this season's shockers continued.  We also saw Ten Hag try to discipline his star man, only to call on him to bail him out of a sticky situation.  We discuss the FA Cup fixtures at the weekend and even dabble into the world of the NFL, as we wish Damar Hamlin the best Eriksen Euro 2020 vibes.

    Nostalgic 1970's Football Era

    Nostalgic 1970's Football Era

This episode is dedictated to Pele the Worlds greatest ever football player.

A nostalgic look back to the 1970's, the charasmatic players and managers around at the time and the passion on the terraces where quite literally two sides would come together with grit and steel to win the match.

The magic of the 1970 World Cup in Mexico too, the Best ever Brazilian side and probably the best ever Internatiional side ever to grace the earth and win the World Cup.

But essentially, the characters at football clubs, as players or managers, were a talking point in the media and supporters up and down the country, no mater who you supported and still are today. Just think of Malcolm Alinson of Crystal Palace, with the stetson, large havana cigar and overcoat - and you can then transport yourself back to a time when football was football and the beautiful game was born.

A truly heart felt and warm discussion about the beautiful game in the 1970's. A time sadly lost, but a time that should never be forgotton. RIP - Edson Arantes do Nascimento, known mononymously by his nickname Pelé. The greatest player of all time.
