New York-based writer Ashley Reese joins us for our a very special Christmas installment of Denzember as we discuss Penny Marshall's 1996 romantic comedy 'The Preachers Wife'.

We discuss the film as a metatextual exploration of Denzel Washington's celebrity image as well as part of Whitney's second leg as an international superstar and actress. We also discuss the film's monumental soundtrack, sung by Whitney herself, an album that remains the best selling gospel record of all time. Finally we discuss the flattening effect of family films of the era (especially those produced by Touchstone/Disney) and how they tend to flirt with societal issues while reaffirming the system that causes them.

Welcome back to another ball-playing, bat-swinging, base running, and All-American episode of THE FILM SNARKS!!!

It's about time we tackled another sports classic, and this is one we've been waiting to do for a while now and with the 20th anniversary of the September 11th attacks this past weekend, the aftermath of which we saw Americans come together as one, we thought the time was right to take a look back at a film that sees a league of extraordinary women bringing Americans together at the height of World War II, with the All-American Baseball Classic, A League Of Their Own!

Even if you're not the sporty type, there really is something here for everyone, as this is a film that's been universally adored by movie goers and critics for nearly 30 years now.

So join us as we find out if 1992's A League Of Their Own deserves to still be so loved as timely social commentary on sexism, but also just a fun and rewatch able sports classic!

“A League of Their Own” is a fictionalized account of the real-life All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, formed during World War II. Geena Davis and Lori Petty play the competitive Hinson sisters, who are recruited to join the Rockford Peaches and play in the league. Since its release in 1992, the movie has inspired many young female athletes, including baseball commentator Jessica Mendoza. She grew up playing softball with her sister and went on to compete at the Olympics — including winning gold and silver. Jessica says one of the movie’s famous lines — “It’s the hard that makes it great” — offered her inspiration to break records on the field and off. 

Jessica Mendoza is a baseball analyst for ESPN and an Olympic softball gold and silver medalist. She also works for the Mets as a baseball operations advisor and is a full-time member of ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball booth.
