Become the Place Where Nurses Want to Work - A Fireside Chat

Become the Place Where Nurses Want to Work - A Fireside Chat

How do nurse leaders and their teams break through complex, chaotic, and broken systems – with widespread burnout – to transform their fast-paced hospitals and ASCs into sustainable caring cultures?

Join us for AORN’s Fireside Chat, a live conversation about solutions to the most-asked question from perioperative nurses and leaders today: How do we rebuild from compassion fatigue, moral distress, and exhaustion – and create a place for perioperative teams to thrive?

National nurse experts will discuss practical approaches that are helping meet the needs of five generations in the workforce, including Millennial and Gen-Z nurses who report that “wellbeing” is a top priority.

Nurse Advocacy: How One Nurse Helped Pass a Surgical Smoke Law

Nurse Advocacy: How One Nurse Helped Pass a Surgical Smoke Law

On this episode of Periop Talk, we talk with Melony Prince, BSN, MSN, RN, CNOR, a clinical educator who advocated to help win a surgical smoke law in her state.

The dangers of surgical smoke didn’t hit home for Prince, a clinical educator for surgical services at Littleton Adventist Hospital in Colorado until a close colleague confided about her own health battle from a career breathing in surgical smoke.

She discusses how to turn your passion into action, what it was like to pass a bill, and why nurses make great advocates.

The Periop Nurse's Role in Research

The Periop Nurse's Role in Research

On this episode of Periop Talk, we talk with Doreen Wagner, PhD, RN, CNOR, about the importance of nursing research.

A Professor of Nursing at WellStar School of Nursing, Kennesaw (Ga.) State University, AORN member, and perioperative nurse, Wagner and her team conducted the first known study to explore the relationship between unplanned perioperative hypothermia, the most common perioperative complication, and the development of postoperative delirium in a large heterogeneous non-cardiac surgery population.

Wagner talks with AORN about the importance of research in perioperative nursing, the different types of research, and gives tips on how to start your own research.

The Surgical Checklist: Then and Now

The Surgical Checklist: Then and Now

On this episode of Periop Talk, we discuss the evolution and use of the Surgical Checklist with Past President of AORN Mary Jo Steiert who was on the ground floor during its creation and, with AORN, was tasked with introducing it to the U.S.

In mid-2008, the World Health Organization (WHO) convened its second international gathering of healthcare providers who were challenged with coming up with something tangible that would improve safety for surgical patients. Mary Jo and AORN’s current CEO Linda Groah, were invited to take part at that historic gathering in Geneva, Switzerland.

The result was the Surgical Checklist that had been modeled internationally and was now ready for the U.S. The process, while simple, has made a big difference in preventing errors and improving patient safety. Ten years later, it’s used in nearly every surgical suite. Why then do we continue to see a steady rate of wrong-site surgeries?
