    287. Alabama IVF Ruling: How to Stop the Attacks on Infertility Treatments & Reproductive Health with Jessica Yellin
What is happening in America – where apparently women who don’t want to be pregnant have to be pregnant, and women who want to be pregnant have to not be pregnant?!? In today’s conversation with Jessica Yellin, former chief White House Correspondent and founder of News Not Noise, we discuss exactly what happened in the recent Alabama ruling that halted IVF treatments, what it means for access to fertility treatments, which states could be next – and how it is all an attack on reproductive rights. We discuss the fetal personhood movement’s trajectory that would jeopardize birth control and even same-sex marriage.   We also talk about how to stay motivated and involved in these collective struggles (and the election season ahead) while also taking care of yourself.  Another must-listen on what is going on with Reproductive Justice in America – where we are, how we got here, and four things we need to do to get out of here, listen to Episode 108: ABORTION: Family Meeting on Four Things to Do Next About Jessica:  Jessica Yellin is the founder of News Not Noise, a pioneering Webby award-winning independent news brand. Trying To Protect Access To IVF

Trying To Protect Access To IVF
The backlash to the Alabama Supreme Court ruling designating frozen embryos has been intense. Republicans at the state and national level have openly disagreed with the decision. And Democrats have used the ruling to hammer Republicans over reproductive rights.

Last month, Illinois Senator Tammy Duckworth introduced a bill to protect IVF. It hasn't gotten a lot of attention - until now.

Duckworth used IVF to build her own family, and has been warning since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade that the decision could lead to reproductive rights being challenged.

Duckworth discusses her legislation and whether she thinks republicans will support it.

Galactica and the Ghost in the Machine - AI Lessons from a Sci-Fi Classic

Galactica and the Ghost in the Machine - AI Lessons from a Sci-Fi Classic

In this episode, we explored the AI themes in Battlestar Galactica through the humanoid Cylons. Originally created as robotic slaves, the Cylons evolve sentience and rebel, sparking an apocalyptic war with humanity. Complex characters like Sharon illustrate AI issues around identity, free will, and synthetic morality that mirror real-world concerns. Ultimately, Battlestar Galactica cautions against reckless AI pursuits, while envisioning compassionate machines that uplift civilization. This sci-fi masterpiece illuminates technology’s double-edged potential through compelling storytelling.

Commander Data: To Boldly Go Where No Algorithm Has Gone Before

Commander Data: To Boldly Go Where No Algorithm Has Gone Before

This episode explores AI ethics through the iconic character of Commander Data from Star Trek: The Next Generation. We examine Data's quest to understand humanity, including his limitations emulating emotions. A classic episode "Measure of a Man" tackles Data's legal status and personhood in a thought-provoking trial. We analyze how Star Trek used androids to raise prescient philosophical questions about the implications of creating AI life. While fictional, Data's journey mirrors issues around developing real-world AI that exceeds human intelligence in some areas, while falling short in others like emotional intelligence. By using sci-fi storytelling, Star Trek compellingly opened minds to rethink our relationship with thinking machines. Listen for an imaginative look at AI through the eyes of one of sci-fi's most sympathetic android characters.
