"A Made Thing": A Conversation with petrichor's Seth Copeland 🦬

Poet Seth Copeland enters the fairy ring to discuss petrichor, an archive of text/image. We also talk about Seth's new collection, Plug in the Mountain. The inspiration was birthed in the Wichita Mountains and became a thing made.

The artist who recreates 'petrichor' plus James Tylor and painting house flies

The artist who recreates 'petrichor' plus James Tylor and painting house flies

Catherine Sarah Young is an artist working with science to talk about the climate crisis. Most recently, she's making art about petrichor -- the smell of recent rain emanating from the earth, and what it might be like when fire and flood obliterate it... or what petrichor smells like on Mars! Catherine is the Art Show's ABC RN Top 5 resident.

When James Tylor discovered the laborious but beautiful 19th C. photography method of daguerreotype, he found a medium that expressed the darkness of historical memory. Drawing on his Kaurna heritage, James explores the ravages of colonial intrusion on landscape and language, through beauty and craftmanship.

Daniel meets the painter Nadine Christensen in her backyard studio and learns why the ordinary - from house flies to front gates, cranes, and acrylic paint -- are worthy of examination on canvas.

No Schist Sherlock: How Wine Gets Rocks Wrong

No Schist Sherlock: How Wine Gets Rocks Wrong

‘From virtually any soil a high-quality wine can be made. The use of geology to promote the quality of a wine is thus merely a marketing tool.’

This is an episode that may ruffle a few feathers.

We speak to two wine-loving geologists, Professor Alex Maltman and Dr Geert-Jan Vis (the latter responsible for the quote above). Both of them raise serious questions about the line the wine world often endorses about how geology (think: limestone, schist, granite) influences wine.

Vis calls the notion that geology and soil influence wine style, ‘romantic b*llocks’. Maltman says it’s, ‘over-hyped’ and writes, ‘simply saying a wine comes from a particular rock doesn’t convey anything about what I might expect from a wine.’

And yet we regularly see wine literature talking about limestone or granite, Kimmeridgian or Jurassic (and so on) and linking this explicitly to wine quality and style.

And this isn’t even to get started on the topic of ‘minerality’ in wine…

So what gives? What’s really going on here? To what extent can geology and soil be seen to impact the vine and wine? Or, to flip it round, to what extent do experts think that the role of geology and soil is over-rated and misunderstood when it comes to wine?

It’s important to say we’re not being deliberately controversial or trying to undermine the concept of terroir (the notion that specific places produce wines with specific characteristics).

What we’re doing is asking questions and challenging a set of prevalent assumptions which we feel is…well…questionable.

We’re aware this episode might provoke debate so please feel free to get in touch. Send us a voice message via Speakpipe or you can find more details to get in touch on our website.

All details from this episode are on our website: Show notes for Wine Blast S4 E20: No Schist Sherlock - How Wine Gets Rocks Wrong.

This is the first in a loosely-connected series of programmes in which we’ll tackle tricky or controversial issues in wine, from minerality to microbiology and yeasts. All with the aim of provoking informed debate, challenging questionable opinions and seeking clarity above all.

Thanks for tuning in. Here's to the joy of wine - cheers to you!

Ps and if you don’t know what petrichor is – we’ve got the answer…

    Dark Totem

    Dark Totem

Jana Opincariu is an award winning artist with paintings recognized across the southwest and paintings that have found their home around the globe. She creates surreal and fantastical images of human bodies, objects and animals. As a painter, she strives to exemplify what it means to become vulnerable and romanticize it. She does this by creating hyper-realistic portraits of people, creatures and bodies, illustrating lucid dreams and making delicate surreal images that demonstrate the lust and chaos we face in day to day life.

In February, Jana won Best of Show and Most Meaningful artwork for her painting Fuck Vegas of the "Sensuality in ART 2022” show at Hellada Gallery.

In her artist statement Jana said, “I imagine that there is no break from my creations and I am my creations and my creations are me. Therefore, every piece I do is a self-portrait.”

Daniel Kathalynas is an award-winning international artist. He works in painting, three dimensional art, sculptural wall hanging, hand-painted animation, music, and symbolic use of materials, 2D rendering, filmmaking and stop motion animation.

In December 2021, his film  Flowering won 2nd place at the Santa Fe 3-minute Film Festival.

Daniel’s method begins in a silent-mind meditation then he allows the first higher thought that enters his mind to forge the direction of the artwork.

Currently, Daniel is traveling across the country and filming short videos called The Roaming Artist – American Odyssey where he discusses his inspirational process, the beauty of national landmarks, local culture and live painting.

The first Totem took place in Albuquerque at Factory on 5th in September, 2019. It was such a success they decided to bring it to Hellada in Long Beach.

Dark Totem is about power imagery: such as animals, elements, or, representative of humans' higher aspect, or, walking into the new realm.

Dark Totem brings dark themes and is not as light hearted. It's emotional, with undertones of the original Totem, including images of humans, animals and delicate things. Attendees will also see some of the artwork from the original Totem.

For our games forecast, we are excited about Petrichor and Patchwork, Christmas edition. Nerdy stuff this week includes game shopping with family, and Rob Paulsen's excellent voice acting.

Missed everyone! We are doing our best to continue recording and releasing regularly!

Ep.26 - With summer but a week away (although you'd think we're already there with the weather we've been having!) Lucy and Saul muse on some of their favourite summer events in the garden that they are really looking forward too...

Lucy and Saul are fully aware that the world has taken a monumental shift - the Coronavirus outbreak has left our little bit of the world in Horticulture reeling both personally and professionally. So we both decided that instead of our longer format episodes every 3 weeks or so - we going to record shorter podcasts, through the week, to bring you a slice of our lives at East Donyland Hall and Stonelands and beyond - trying to bring a little bit of spring and sunshine to your eardrums.

Summer is but a hairs-breadth away in the calendar and for both Head Gardeners, Lucy and Saul really look forward to an abundance of growth, produce and life that happens during the summer months. Both Veggies and Exotic plants now take centre stage and the pair couldn't be happier, so they chat about what they are looking forward to, have a small reflection on the RHS Virtual Chelsea Flower Show and give their nose's a good work out with all the floral scents.
