If you’ve been listening for a while, you’ve come to understand how important I believe leadership is to being a successful PGA Professional.  In these times of low retention levels and poor employee engagement, your ability to lead your team and your facility has never been more critical.  It’s the reason we’re launching a much anticipated leadership program from GBNU here this fall, 2022.  We’re going to give PGA Professionals the chance to develop their leadership skills so they can become somebody that people want to follow, somebody that people want to work for, and somebody that can produce results for their facility.  All through the lens of what you, the PGA Professional does every day.  I can’t wait to tell you more about it.

And right on queue, we have an episode that can be a masterclass on leadership.  I was so honored to have the chance to speak with our featured guest, David Novak.  David is one of the premier leadership minds out there.  He’s the former CEO and co-founder of Yum Brands, which operates KFC, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, and The Habit Burger.  He’s been named Chief Executive of the Year, and oversaw explosive growth as the company doubled its number of restaurants under his leadership and grew to a market cap of almost $32 billion.  His marketing background includes such big wins as developing and launching Cool Ranch Doritos, and Pizza Hut’s meat lover’s pizza…along with one notable marketing mishap, which we’ll discuss.  You’ll want to hear that.

Now after retiring in 2016, David launched “David Novak Leadership” where he coaches leaders using his time tested methods and practices, including Purposeful Recognition.  He’s the host of the very popular “How Leaders Lead” podcast where talks with world class leaders every week.  In addition he’s a New York Times bestselling author.

David is busy to say the least, but not too busy to find time for one of his biggest passions…golf.  He’s the definition of a “golf nut” and not to mention, quite a player as you’ll hear early in our conversation about a huge accomplishment he achieved this summer.  So David knows golf and he know golf pros.  That’s why this conversation is so powerful.  Whether you’re in a leadership position, or aspire to get to one, David’s lessons here are priceless and ones you can implement the very next time you walk in the door at work.

This was such a pleasure to have this conversation and I’m excited to share it with you.

Welcome back for part two of my conversation with Seth Waugh, the CEO of the PGA of America.  In part one we focused on a critically important topic for Golf Professionals today, the supply and demand issues in the labor market.  Every PGA Professional should hear what Seth had to say on the topic.  It was an honest and frank conversation and personally I think we should be encouraged by what we heard.

Now we get into two more important topics.  As you know, prior to the PGA, Seth was the CEO of Deutsche Bank Americas.  I took the opportunity to ask him about his leadership philosophy and what it takes to lead organizations of such immense size.  Any leader can benefit from his thoughts on the topic, especially his “Golden Rule”, which you’ll hear him explain.  Leadership is such an important skill when it comes to retaining great people, and in this labor market, it’s never been more critical.  This is a great opportunity to take some leadership insights from an experienced and successful leader.

Lastly, I ask him the question about LIV.  One perspective we haven’t heard much is how that tour can impact the PGA of America and specifically PGA Professionals.  Seth will be at the forefront of some of the most important decisions that golf’s governing bodies will make regarding LIV.  You’ll get his thoughts.  You won’t want to miss them.

In this season of Getting Better Now, we’ve talked a lot about the state of the golf industry.  We heard from the Golf Professionals when we highlighted “The Club Pro Crisis” in Episode 01 of this season.  We heard from the CEO of the PGA of America himself in a candid conversation with Seth Waugh in Episode 02.  Now in Episode 04 of Season 8, we hear from another association chief, Jay Karen.

Jay is the CEO of the National Golf Course Owner’s Association (NGCOA), where he’s spent nearly 17 years in multiple roles with the association.  He has a pulse on the issues impacting owners throughout the country, many of which end up impacting us as the PGA Professionals working for those owners.

A self-proclaimed “learner”, Jay is actually pursuing his membership as a Class A PGA Professional and you’ll hear his own war story about passing the PAT.  In addition, we’ll obviously get into the labor situation from the perspective of the owners as well as Jay’s personal feelings about how we got here, and more importantly how we can fix it.

Jay also watched the downturn in golf happen after the “Tiger Boom” and has great insight into how we can avoid that from happening again, post COVID.

Jay is the co-host of Golf Business LIVE, where he shares the screen with the PGA’s own Don Rea.  You can catch up on past episodes on YouTube.

Not only was Jay fun to talk to, he is really knowledgeable on the issues impacting golf so I know you’re going to get a lot from this conversation.

Most of you listening to this are working at golf clubs that are busier than they have been in a long, long time.  Maybe even busier than ever before.  Rounds of golf are high and membership rosters are full.  Now that we’re settled into this new reality, the focus is on retaining all of these golfers so our clubs don’t return to the struggles that existed before this recent golf boom.

How can we do that?  If you ask Shep Hyken, it’s by creating an amazing customer experience.

Shep Hyken, calls himself the CAO (Chief Amazement Officer) of Shepard Presentations. He’s a customer service and experience expert and a sought after keynote speaker, as a Hall of Fame Speaker from the National Speakers Association.  For decades, he’s worked with companies that want to build loyal relationships with their customers and employees.

As a New York Times and Wall Street Journal best-selling author he’s written 8 books focusing on delivering amazing customer service, customer engagement, managing the customer experience and creating customer loyalty.  His new book “I’ll Be Back” on building returning customers, is a perfect fit for the situation in our industry today.  He’s also the host of “Amazing Business Radio”, a podcast where he profiles leaders and their customer service expertise.

With all this said, Shep is a big golfer and as a member at his local club, he understands the customer experience at clubs from both the staff’s perspective and from the members’.  That’s why this is such a valuable conversation.  There are plenty of takeaways in this conversation to help you and your team build a better service experience at your club.

S8 EP 01 | The Club Pro Crisis | Shane Ryan, Golf Digest

S8 EP 01 | The Club Pro Crisis | Shane Ryan, Golf Digest

This episode is brought to you by GBN University.  GBNU is where today's PGA Professionals come to grow their skills, advance their careers, and increase their bottom lines.  Go to www.golfbusinessnetwork.com/gbnu for more info.

Welcome to Season Eight of the Getting Better Now podcast!

We kick things off with an important conversation about a topic you’re all too familiar with.  There probably isn’t anyone listening that didn’t either read or hear about the Golf Digest article “The Club Pro Crisis”, published earlier this spring.  Author Shane Ryan dove deep into the personal stories of a number of PGA Professionals, who opened up to him about their struggles in our industry.  For those of us in the business, it was both familiar and a little bit (if not a lot) depressing.  We all read the article saying to ourselves, “Yep, I’ve done that.”, “That’s right, that happened to me too.”, or even “You think that’s bad, how about this one?”.

Since the article put a spotlight on why our industry is struggling and what the job of a PGA Professional is really like, the good news is that a lot of people saw it and were awakened to our reality.  Personally, I had former members of mine reach out and ask if all this was true and what I thought we needed to do. Solving this problem has to start with an awareness from decision makers that there is indeed a problem, and thanks to Shane Ryan, the ball is rolling a little faster now.

That’s why I wanted to bring him on the podcast and talk more about the article, the people that he spoke to, and his thoughts on what the problems are and how we can solve them.  My goal is to put as much attention on this issue as I can, and hopefully this episode helps.  If this gives you one more opportunity to send something to the leaders at your club to help prove that you need change at your facility, then please use this as a way to help.  You know all of the stories that you’ll hear about, because you’ve lived them.  But don’t assume the members at your club or the owner of your course knows them too.  As Shane tells us, Golf Professionals have leverage like never before and an opportunity to force change for the better.  We just need to make it happen.

S7 EP 05: Retaining Golfers...and Golf Professionals | Don Rea, PGA Secretary

S7 EP 05: Retaining Golfers...and Golf Professionals | Don Rea, PGA Secretary

It’s not often that we get to hear a conversation on the issues facing our industry directly from the leaders at the PGA of America.  In the summer of 2021 I had the opportunity to record a conversation with Don Rea, the current Secretary of the PGA, and feel this conversation was definitely worthy of releasing again.

This was a wide ranging discussion that covered the challenges of recruiting in our industry today as well as goal setting for your future, while profiling Don’s unique rise through the industry to one of the most influential positions in golf today.  If you’ve ever wondered if it’s possible to go from cleaning carts and picking the range to becoming the owner of the golf course, you need to hear this conversation!

S7 EP 04: Your Five Choices | John Kennedy, PGA

S7 EP 04: Your Five Choices | John Kennedy, PGA

For close to half a century as a PGA Professional, John Kennedy has supported, coached, and mentored people for a living.  Whether it was his team of Assistant Professionals and other staff at the famed West Chester Country Club where he spent 26 years as the Director of Golf , the students he loved to help on the lesson tee, or bringing the game of golf to military veterans, he’s used his role as a PGA Professional to enrich the lives of others by helping them improve in both golf and life.

Along the way he was recognized by the PGA of America for 3 National Awards, 10 Metropolitan Section Awards and inducted into the Met PGA Section Hall of Fame in 2020.  Even since his retirement in 2016 he’s still counseling and consulting with PGA Professionals, always available to share his advice and experience.

That was on full display in this conversation as he talks about the current state of the industry, how to succeed at your facility, the critical importance of having a time management system, and more.

S7 EP 02: Your Message, Your Story, Your Brand | Kraig Kann

This episode is brought to you by GBN University, powered by Golf Business Network.  GBNU is where leading PGA Professionals come to improve their skills, build their careers, and increase their impact.  Go to www.golfbusinessnetwork.com/gbnuniversity for more info.

The last time we heard from Kraig Kann on the Getting Better Now podcast, he was giving a keynote (or as he tells us he doesn’t do keynotes, he does experiences) at the Golf Business Network annual members meeting in late January 2020.  So much has changed since we sat there not knowing what we were about to endure, but one thing that’s consistent is Kraig’s message. Communication mattered then, and it matters just as much if not more now.

If you don’t know, Kraig was one of the original anchors on the Golf Channel and spent nearly 20 years as a staple on the channel’s golf coverage.  Following the Golf Channel he served the LPGA as their Chief Communications Officer where he took part in a resurgence of the tour’s visibility and success.  He now leads his own company, Kann Advisory Group where he coaches business leaders to clarify and amplify their message.

In this episode we get to dive deeper in a one on one conversation into the importance of personal branding for your career, why knowing your story is critical and what questions to ask yourself to understand your message and what you have to offer.  All of this and a whole lot more are detailed in Kraig’s award winning book, “Can You Get Our Attention?”.  I encourage you to pick up a copy.

EP 017: Tools to Be the Job Candidate that Stands Out

EP 017: Tools to Be the Job Candidate that Stands Out

We’ve been hearing so much about jobs, hiring, and the issues in the workforce today.  But the focus in this episode is on the candidates.  What can you do to try to stand out?  How about some tips on what the best resumes look like?  And what I believe is an underutilized resource, LinkedIn.  How can you optimize your profile and use the platform to help you land your next great job.  Believe me, LinkedIn can help.

We discuss all this with Jeremy Nichols.  Jeremy is a recruiter for Gecko Hospitality focusing in Florida and specifically the Tampa area.  With Jeremy we get a little different perspective than the golf industry focused conversations we typically have.  Jeremy understands the hospitality industry and has been recruiting for a wide variety of positions for over 20 years.  He talks to tons of employers and candidates every day, and he knows what works and what doesn’t.  Speaking of LinkedIn, follow Jeremy for daily tips and insights into the hiring world and subscribe to his YouTube channel where he’s creating regular videos that can help you with anything from interviewing, negotiating, getting hired and more.

EP 016: 5 Ways to Stop Burnout

Spend more than a few minutes in a room with a group of Golf Professionals these days and you're bound to start hearing about some level of "burnout".  The affect of the pandemic on golf and the labor shortage have come together to put even more pressure than normal on today's Professionals.

In this episode, we cover the 5 reasons we can feel burned out and go over practical solutions to address this issue.

EP 014: How to Create Your Future | Don Rea, PGA of America Secretary

EP 014: How to Create Your Future | Don Rea, PGA of America Secretary

You likely know him now as the Secretary of the PGA of America, in line to be the President of the Association in just a few years.  Don Rea's background and his experience as an owner/operator of Augusta Ranch Golf Club have provided him with a unique perspective that we don’t often see in PGA leadership.  He’s a creative programmer, he knows how to build relationships, and he understands the importance of creating a winning culture on his team at Augusta Ranch.  Following from afar, I have been optimistic about what Don can bring to the PGA of America, and this conversation only reinforced that belief.

What does Don think about one of the biggest challenges we face today as an Association, recruiting and retention?  Let’s find out.

The Thing About Golf #46: Phil Scott

The Thing About Golf #46: Phil Scott

Who would have thought that a summer spent in the UK visiting family would prove the start of a journey that ended in Australia's first Masters green jacket?
Phil Scott, father of former World No.1 Adam, chats with The Thing About Golf host Rod Morri about his accidental start in the game to Adam's surreal 2013 Masters victory and almost every facet of the golf industry in between.
From club building and design to course construction and management, there isn't much Phil Scott hasn't touched in golf and he reflects on it all in Episode 46.

EP 013: How to Say "No" - The Golf Professional's New Dilemma

EP 013: How to Say "No" - The Golf Professional's New Dilemma

With the record numbers we're seeing at courses throughout the country, Golf Professional's are now faced with the challenge of often having to say no to their members and customers.  No there aren't any tee times, no there isn't any space in that event, no we can't host your outing...and so on.  This is new for many of us since we've been trained to say "Yes" and to constantly seek out ways to grow rounds and revenues.

As I found out in a conversation a few years ago, knowing how to say no and tell someone something they don’t want to hear, is literally a science.  Experts in behavioral psychology have studied the tactics that are most effective at delivering your message in a way that diffuses angry situations and will limit the push-back you get from our now disgruntled members and customers.

Our expert that we’re learning from is Richard S. Gallagher, author of “The Customer Service Survival Kit”.  Some of the critical lessons we’ll hear from him are: being nice and polite is great, but it doesn’t help an upset person feel better, leaning into criticism is much more effective than explaining “why” or playing defense, and the key to diffusing a difficult situation begins with acknowledgement.

EP 012: The One Skill Every PGA Professional Needs | Keith Stewart, PGA

EP 012: The One Skill Every PGA Professional Needs | Keith Stewart, PGA

Keith Stewart has spent over 25 years as a Golf Professional, working his way from an Assistant at clubs like Isleworth, home to countless tour pros and most famously at one point, Tiger Woods, to landing a Head Professional position at a unique club in Princeton, NJ, called Springdale Golf Club.  Along the way he’s been recognized 5 times as a New Jersey Section award winner, including the 2019 New Jersey PGA Golf Professional of the Year.

It was while at Springdale that Keith began to make a name for himself for the innovative ways he communicated with his membership.  We’ve all tried different avenues to get our message out to our members, but have you ever considered creating a radio show?  I bet not. But that’s what Keith did.  Every week he hit the airwaves at the local Fox Sports affiliate as the host of Springdale Golf Live. It was his chance to talk about the club and begin to develop his own voice which led him to where he is today.

He’s now a full-time host and writer, where he’s using his abilities to tell stories about the game everywhere from the local level to the biggest happenings in golf.

But in this conversation, we focus on how you can build your communication skills and how you can focus on the development of the people around you.

EP 011: Doing the Right Thing is the Right Thing to Do | Steve Scott, PGA Professional, Author

EP 011: Doing the Right Thing is the Right Thing to Do | Steve Scott, PGA Professional, Author

It’s late August, 1996.  I had just arrived at college for my freshman year.  Like most college kids back then with this new-found independence, I was taking the opportunity to sit in my dorm room and stare at the TV, free from anyone telling me where to be and what to do.  Without Netflix, or YouTube, or Prime, we watched what was on TV.  And on this particular Sunday, the eyes of the golf world were fixated on the final of the United States Amateur Championship.

Over the last few years, Tiger Woods had burst on the scene and captivated golfers with his unmatched talent, prodigious length, and record setting play.  It’s safe to say that no amateur golfer had garnered this much attention since Bobby Jones, some 70 years prior.  Tiger was no longer just known in golf circles, he was a celebrity.

As I sat on my bed in that tiny room in State College, PA, it was time to watch Tiger take his victory lap through that final match and achieve what no other golfer had ever accomplished...winning three U.S. Amateur Championships in a row.

But something happened on that path to victory.  A young, fellow college player from the University of Florida, named Steve Scott, was 5 up after 18 holes.  This wasn’t supposed to be the story line.  How could Tiger’s monster drives and the backing of an entire gallery, not take down this opponent?  Was Steve Scott going to be what stood in between Tiger Woods and golf history?

As many of you know, the legend of Tiger Woods took a huge leap forward that day.  His comeback from that 5 down deficit was everything you came to expect from the most dominant player in our game.  Tiger would go on to turn professional shortly after, would soon win his first PGA Tour event, and eventually The Masters, just 7 months later.  You know the rest.

But as we learn in the episode, all was not lost for Steve Scott that day.  He played as well as he could, taking Tiger Woods to the brink of defeat and during his college days, reached #1 in the amateur golf rankings.  But it’s an episode on the 34th hole of the match that stands out to many.  We discuss what happened and how Steve’s reaction, his sportsmanship and his decision to do the right thing, even in defeat, has benefited him time and time again.

In fact, it’s the title of his upcoming book, “Hey Tiger- You Need to Move Your Mark Back”, the story of the ‘96 U.S. Amateur and the moment that has defined Steve Scott’s career as a player and now as a PGA Professional.    You can get the book HERE.

EP 010: You Have to Put in the Work | Jason Ballard | Oak Hill Country Club

EP 010: You Have to Put in the Work | Jason Ballard | Oak Hill Country Club

What do you get when you combine a desire for constant improvement, with a passion for the game of golf, the golf industry, and world-class hospitality?  For Jason Ballard, it’s all added up to an already successful career at some of the most renowned facilities in the world.  But the 2020 PGA National Merchandiser of the Year and Head Professional at the esteemed Oak Hill Country Club, isn’t ready to rest on his laurels.

As Jason tells us, he was mentored on his way up in this business to always seek ways to get better and to consistently scrutinize your operation and your own performance to look for new opportunities.  He was fortunate to gain experience as an Assistant Professional at clubs such as Congressional and East Lake and most notably, the Augusta National Golf Club.

All of that experience led him to his position at Oak Hill, where he’s already been able to host one championship and is looking forward to his next one when the club hosts its fourth PGA Championship in 2023.

EP 009: The Luckiest Guy on Tour | Jim Herman, PGA Tour Winner

EP 009: The Luckiest Guy on Tour | Jim Herman, PGA Tour Winner

For my money, building a successful career on the PGA Tour where you earn enough money that you’re not worried about your next check, where you’re not consistently losing your card, and you’re able to control your schedule, is as tough as making it any sport out there.  There are no guaranteed contracts.  There are no drafts, trades, or free agencies.  There’s you and your game vs. the best players in the world.  And if you don’t play well enough, your career is over.

So if you manage to put together 10+ years on the PGA Tour that include 3 wins, you have a career that a lot of tour players would love to have.  And if you know where Jim Herman came from and his path to the tour, his career is even more impressive.  Jim always aspired to be on the PGA Tour, so he left college and hit the mini-tours.  Each fall he’d go to PGA Tour Qualifying School, and for six years in a row, he failed to make it to the final stage and get out at least to the Nationwide Tour, now the Korn Ferry Tour.  In between trips to Q school, he worked as a Golf Professional doing all of the duties that so many of us do each and every day, running clinics, placing orders, teaching lessons, and everything else.  And that’s where I met Jim.

In 2006 and 2007, we were Assistant Professionals together in New Jersey and at that time, while Jim still felt strongly about chasing his dream of making it to the tour, reality was getting close to setting in.  Was life going to be playing and competing as a Club Professional and always wishing his dream came true?  Or could he actually make it out there?

In 2007, he finally made it through.  He had status on the Nationwide Tour.  A couple years later, he notched a win on that tour and made it to the big leagues.  There were plenty of bumps in the road that ensued, lots of ups and downs, lessons learned, and as Jim says...definitely some luck too.

But as we enter the 2021 PGA Tour season, he’s still out there.  He’s exempt for two more seasons after his third career win last summer and at this point, life is good.

He’s as humble as they come and that’s why he’s easy to root for.  I hope after this conversation you become a fan as well.  We get into some great insight into how he’s handled these pressure situations that feel like life or death at the time.  He’s a throwback to a former era before players relied on data, stats, and a coach standing behind them 24/7.  He’s proof that there are a lot of different ways to get it done out there, and more proof that through hard work, belief, and persistence, dreams can come true.

    In this episode:

While there are a lot of differences between the jobs and responsibilities of a Golf Professional and a Golf Course Superintendent, in the end we’re both at the facility to meet the expectations of our customers, drive value to the bottom line, and to recruit and retain great people to our teams.  When you look at the career paths of Golf Professionals and Superintendents, there are many similarities in the challenges that we face as we climb the ladder in our careers.  And in the end, we’re both trying to gain the right experience and grow an influential network that will help us land that leadership position in our side of the golf industry.  So when you really get down to it, while our jobs are different, our challenges, our struggles and our successes share many similarities.

In this episode, we talk about all of this and more with Tyler Bloom, of Tyler Bloom Consulting.  You’ll hear about Tyler’s career as a Golf Course Superintendent which included stops at some of the most renowned facilities in the country and why he pivoted his career to combine his passion for the industry with his true calling in leadership, management and career development.  As he discusses his career trajectory, you may find similarities with your own story.  Maybe it’s time for you to ask some tough questions or make some difficult decisions about your career.  Is there something pulling you in a different direction or does your true passion lie somewhere else than where you’re currently sitting?  These are critical questions to ask and it’s why I think Tyler’s story is important.

And finally, we get into discussing the current state of labor in the golf industry.  It’s no secret that it’s as difficult as ever to fill positions in our industry.  This isn’t unique to the golf department at your club.  It stretches into every area at every facility.  As a Golf Course Superintendent Tyler tackled this problem head on and found an innovative way to find ready, willing and able team members to the point where he eliminated the need to even advertise open positions.  Could this program work at your club and solve the seemingly never-ending labor dilemma?  Let’s find out.
