Lexi & Ben try to dork out about the Potter-verse but end up having a messy and sometimes circular discussion of She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, harm, nostalgia, problematic media, death of the author, and what the ultimate legacy of the Harry Potter franchise may be.
Content/Trigger Warning: Discussion of transphobia, anti-semitism, bigotry, racism, sexual assault and harm.

We hope you said your goodbyes to summer because September is here and we've recorded our biggest #tbt yet. This month we are happy to announce our very first themed episode in honour of the start of Fall, Back To School.
The Wheel of Doom's pick might have been too on the nose when we said we wanted something for "The Fall". It chose from a list of YA/children's literature with our Back to School theme and selected a modern retelling of John Milton's Paradise lost, The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman's (yet another series, sorry not sorry). Quite a fall indeed.
We were sent on a brave yet controversial journey to the North with this critically acclaimed and religiously hated novel. Don't forget your lunch as we join Lyra on her quest to rescue her friends and the world from the greedy hands of the Gobblers.
This podcast includes topics may not be suitable for everyone. This particular novel has a number of triggers that we may be discussing or briefly touching upon. The full list of trigger warnings is available on TheStoryGraph, however, some notable triggers are alcohol, animal cruelty, child death, religious bigotry, torture, and violence.

In this video, I tried to make sense of my thoughts surrounding the 2007 Golden Compass film directed by Chris Weitz and the His Dark Materials HBO series. I took a trip down memory lane along the way to delve deeper into Philip Pullman, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass as well to tie it all together into a somewhat large piece I hope you all enjoy!
Are book to movie/tv/theatre/videogame adaptations ever good?
We start to answer this question in our latest minisode... and then get sidetracked by talking about which adaptations we've liked and disliked. Important stuff, you know.
We're not (fully) sober in this episode, so if you're not comfortable with that, no problem. You can skip this one. Drink and smoke responsibly. (But also it's not really that great, anyways, so...)
Also, yes, Jess said Gary Oldman instead of Gary Marshall. It's okay, it's a mistake. Get over it.
Episode 9 of BYOB, the Bring Your Own Book Podcast, featuring Nikki, Kelly, and Tilly! Every episode we'll discuss the book we read and pair it with a drink inspired by the book.

In this piece, I try to take apart what has gone wrong with Philip Pullman's latest novel, The Secret Commonwealth, and how it affects the greater trilogy, The Book Of Dust. I get into Lyra and Pan's relationship, the tone, pacing, and character arcs of the books, with minimal spoilers.

Today we're talking about the one fandom to unite all AUs: His Dark Materials. We talk about how a small fandom became one of the most common sources for alternate universes, as well as why the source material itself might not lend itself that well to fanworks. Plus we find out what our daemons are!

In an intermittently analogue-sounding episode (sorry about that, we’ve done our best to eradicate the hiss!), the Fionas talk The Apprentice, Northern Lights and try to gain some perspective on our constantly noisy digital world. Plus, Hollow has some wisdom about values, there’s a mention of some retro kids TV and both Fionas are making space for creative fun.

In this week’s episode we talk about speed bumps in our reading (aptly and awkwardly named spreeding bumps), Vee accepts a Contact challenge, and Jess breaks her book buying ban. Also of note: the need for good male role models, ~mood books~, not-quite-fantasy books, Monday meltdowns, The Four Doorways, and our very first fan mail!
Vee reviews La Belle Sauvage (The Book of Dust # 1) by Philip Pullman, the prequel to the His Dark Materials series: an ageless Gaslamp fantasy whose mundane spy roots plunge unexpectedly into the fairy world. Long live Norman!
Jess reads The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw, a well-written book about ghost witches, revenge, and romance - all unfortunately set at the wrong time of year. Womp womp.
And sorry for the low audio volume. We’re figuring things out.
Our Favouritest Book(s)
Welcome to our podcast where we rant about books. In this very first episode we talk about our favourite books - the ones that brought us to where we are today, the ones that we’ll never shake loose. Vee discovers she’s a witch and Jess confesses her childhood truths. A lot of giggling, a generous serving of awko taco, and a whole load of opinions all around.
Recommendations for future books welcome!

For this month's study, Sophie and Mark took on the insurmountable task of trying to analyse one of the most popular, but immensely complex, young-adult fantasy stories in modern times: His Dark Materials.
