What Does the Bible Say About Who Is This Jesus #3?

What Does the Bible Say About Who Is This Jesus #3?

In this third episode of Who Is This Jesus, Arnie and Fred continue to discuss some of the people who had the closest contact or unusual experiences with Jesus and recognized the special attributes that were unique to Him. Consequently, this led them to distinctly different conclusions regarding His identity. We begin with Philip the apostle who recognized Jesus as the individual Moses spoke of in the Old Testament. We talk about Nathaniel next who Philip sought out to tell him who they had found. We notice what convinced Nathaniel that Jesus was the Son of God and King of Israel. We next look at Nicodemus who was a Pharisee and a ruler of the Jews. We discuss what he had concluded about Jesus and some of what Jesus taught him. We next move to the Samaritan woman at the Sychar well and the people of Sychar who she told of her discussion with Jesus. We closeout this episode noticing those who followed Jesus from Galilee to the Golan Heights and what He said to them. Take about 30-minutes to listen in on our discussion. Have your Bible handy so you can verify what we are saying. There is a transcript of this Buzzsprout episode provided for your convenience.

    Walking In The Spirit

    Walking In The Spirit

Is it possible to see the miracles, signs, wonders, and conversions seen in the early Acts church today?  Today's podcast seeks to find the key that unlocks these things; assuming they are real and still for today.  When we walk in the Spirit, we live with the ability to listen to the Lord's voice and obey.  As we do, we must know Scripture well enough to stand on the truth and proclaim it to those who are in darkness.  Finally, as we walk in the Spirit and in obedience, we should expect signs and wonders to follow.  This was the pattern, especially in Acts 8 (our backdrop passage for today).  If we walk in the Spirit, we can expect God to do amazing things.  To reach those "desperate enough for Jesus," are we listening to the Lord's heart?

Baptism and Temptation - The Gospels

Baptism and Temptation - The Gospels

In this Bible Story, the heavens are opened up as John baptizes Jesus. The signalling of Jesus’ earthly ministry has begun, and all of history is about to be shaped forever. Then Jesus is led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where he is tempted by Satan. This story is inspired by Matthew 3:1-17, Matthew 4:1-11, Mark 1:9-13, Luke 3:21-22, Luke 4:1-13, John 1:19-34. Go to BibleinaYear.com and learn the Bible in a Year.

Today's Bible verse is Mark 1:11 from the King James Version.

Episode 176: “Repent and be baptized for the Kingdom of Heaven is near” yelled John the Baptist as he preached to the people on the banks of the Jordan river. John knew that the day of The Lord was coming soon and he sought to prepare the hearts of the people for His arrival. As John was going about this mission, Jesus made His way through the crowd to be baptized by John. And though he did not fully understand why Jesus would make this request, he obeyed. As Jesus was coming up from the water, the skies opened and the people heard the audible voice of God for the first time in over four hundred years! This marked the beginning of Jesus’ ministry…and His temptation.

    Helpers in the Church

    Helpers in the Church

Many Jews were becoming followers of Jesus in Jerusalem. Needy widows were given food every day, but some were being left out. Instead of neglecting their teaching and preaching time to address this food problem, the apostles asked the Christians to choose seven faithful men to care for the widows and serve the church in this way.

Bible verses used in this episode:

    Outline:

    1. The church grew, and widows were missing out on food (Acts 6:1)
    2. The problem is solved by choosing seven helpers (Acts 6:2-6)
    3. The church grows even more (Acts 6:7)

    Tips for teaching children:

    • Guide the children in listing all of the “jobs” and helpers at church.  This could be preaching and teaching but also behind-the-scenes activities such as lawnmowing, washing dishes or placing songbooks in the pews.  What would happen if no one did these jobs? Write thank you notes to some of these people.
    • Arrange for a widow or widower to visit your class and share some of their challenges.
    • Collect food items to give to someone you know or donate to a local food bank.

    Tips for teaching adults:

    • Ask the class: If your congregation needed to choose some people to take care of the widows in the church, what qualities would you want the caregivers to possess?  Why?
    • Make a list of all the widows in your congregation and consider how the class might "adopt" them. Pray for and visit them regularly, buy their groceries for them, and take them out to their favourite restaurant.  Pick them up for church if they need it.  As a class leader, you could delegate different ones in the class to organise different things related to meeting the widows' needs.
    •  If anyone in your class is a widow or widower, ask if she or he would like to tell the class about the challenges they have faced.

The Mission of Philip - The Book of Acts

The Mission of Philip - The Book of Acts

In this Bible Story, Philip is used to preach the gospel in Samaria. He preaches in the desert to an Ethiopian official and baptizes him. This story is inspired by Acts 8:4-8:40. Go to BibleinaYear.com and learn the Bible in a Year.

Today's Bible verse is Acts 8:37 from the King James Version.

Episode 222: Philip, one of the scattered disciples, was in the city of Samaria teaching the people about Jesus and the Kingdom of God. As he spoke, thousands of people came to listen and found healing, peace, and forgiveness. After this God’s Holy Spirit called Philip to go to a desert road. While there, Philip saw the carriage of an Ethiopian Official. He ran up next to the man’s carriage and listened as he read from the prophet Isaiah. God had sent Philip to this barren road just in time to teach the Official the message and mission of Jesus.

    Jesus Feeds the 5,000

    Jesus Feeds the 5,000

So many people wanted to hear Jesus preach that a crowd followed him to a remote location. As mealtime approached, the only food that was found was a boy’s lunch containing five small loaves of bread and two small fish. Jesus instructed the apostles to divide the food among the crowd of 5000 men (in addition to women and children). Everyone ate as much as they and then there was still food left over at the end of the meal.

Jesus has the power to provide what people need.

Bible verses used in this episode:

     Outline:

    1. Jesus preaching and healing (John 6:1-4)
    2. The problem of the hungry crowd (John 6:5-9)
    3. The meal (John 6:10-11)
    4. Leftovers (John 6:12-14)

    Tips for teaching:

    • If older children enjoy maths have them calculate how much one meal of fish and bread would cost and then multiply that by 5000 men (plus women and children).  Find out the average daily wage and work out how long a person would have to work to provide food for that many.
    • Eat fish and bread for a snack today.
    • Adults could consider the question, "Why do I follow Jesus?"
    • Ask adults which character they relate to the most and then explain why. Characters include Jesus, Philip, Andrew, the crowd or the boy.
    • Share a meal together.  Have each person bring a dish to share for the meal and then an extra dish to share with someone afterwards.

    Pyrrhus - Episode 2

    Pyrrhus - Episode 2

    plutarch.life/pyrrhus

Pyrrhus, tempted to fight in the old Homeric style of one on one, strikes me as a man born in the wrong era. With the rise of the Macedonian phalanx, his tactical brilliance sees some success but his personal appetite for risk and voracious craving for the next adventure over the horizon cause him to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory too many times in his life.

From Fabricius to Sparta to Argos, Pyrrhus seems to learn prudence, but only learns that even the Spartans can defend their homeland with everything they've got.

How can we learn from Pyrrhus and not earn victories so costly that we end in defeat?

    Also, Pyrrhus's end in Argos...

How to read a metaphor (or an omen!).

    And so much more...

A Mess Worth Making | Acts: How To Be A Jesus-Filled Church | Week 15

A Mess Worth Making | Acts: How To Be A Jesus-Filled Church | Week 15

Following Jesus on mission can get messy, but it’s a mess worth making. Sometimes you’ve got to go through hard places to get to the low-hanging harvest.

In this sermon from Acts 8:4-25, Pastor Adam looks at the ministry of Phillip in Samaria and unpacks five ways mission is messy and five reasons it’s worth it.

If you need encouragement to press through the hard times and keep leaning into a life on the frontlines of the advancing kingdom of God, this sermon is for you. And if you feel like your life is a mess, you’ll be reminded that Jesus stepped into the mess to rescue and redeem.

Water Into Wine [Word Made Flesh 06]

Water Into Wine [Word Made Flesh 06]

In John 2, by turning water into wine,  Jesus draws his disciples to a greater faith. They learned about the kind of king Jesus is and the kind of kingdom he means to bring. It is easy to forget when the wine is flowing, that it can’t flow forever. What do we do when the wine runs out? When life’s circumstances let us down? John tells us in that moment to trust Jesus. When our wine runs out, we are often tempted to scramble and resort to all kinds of self-preservation that never works. But Jesus’ rescue plan never fails. Do whatever he tells you to do. Not because it stops the fun, but because it leads to real joy. Simple obedience to him, is not some esoteric, mystical thing. He is here and available to help us with real, everyday problems. He is not an insurance plan for your soul; He is a master of ceremonies who cares about every last detail of your life, who wants the best for you and knows how to get it.

    Important People

-Bucephalus - Yes, a horse is an important character! Fiery, hard-working, and lasting till the edge of Alexander's empire, Bucephalus (ox-head) provides an analogue for us to see a fiery temperament tamed.
-Philip - Alexander’s ambitious father and the succesful military reformer who almost led an expedition against Persia himself. His untimely assassination makes that task fall to Alexander.
-Olympias - An ambitious and scheming mother, Olympias always pushes Alexander to do more and work harder. While at home, she frequently conflicts with Antipater, the regent Alexander left in charge of Macedonia in his decade-long absence.
-Darius III - The last Achaemenid emperor of Persia flees from Alexander twice but, overall, is treated well by his enemy. He didn’t choose his successor, but ultimatley respects the man who sits on the throne of Cyrus after his death.
-Poros - One of the last king-generals that Alexander defeats before turning around to head back home. Poros lives on the far side of the Indus River and earns Alexander’s respect in a hard-fought battle. Alexander keeps him in his current position and adds lands to his after defeating him.
-Aristotle - One of the greatest philosophers who ever lived worked as the personal tutor to Alexander the Great for at least two years. The two men continue to correspond later in life but some versions of the story have their relationship cool significantly after Alexander executes his grand-nephew, Callisthenes (cf. sections 53-55)
-Philotas - A contemporary of Alexander rising in the ranks under his father, Parmenio. Both experienced leaders who served under Philip and Alexander, Philotas’s pride finds him implicated in a conspiracy and Alexander kills him and his father.
-Clitus (Cleitus) - A member of Alexander’s companion cavalry who saves his life at The Battle of Granicus River. When he later tries to publicly correct Alexander for adopting too many Persian customs, the fight leads to his tragic death, which Alexander struggles to recover from.
-Callisthenes - Grand-nephew of Aristotle accompanying Alexander on the Persian Expedition. He acts as a proxy for Alexander's relationship with the ethical and political lessons Alexander had learned from Aristotle. When he dies (some reports say by Alexander's order, others do not), it seems Alexander lost his last link with his childhood education.

    Important Places

-Thebes - Not just in Plutarch’s backyard, but the city punished for revolting after Philip’s death. It is burned to the ground and 30,000 of its inhabitant are sold into slavery. Plutarch thinks this must anger the god Dionysius, who was born close to Thebes.
