    Why every photographer needs an ND filter

    Why every photographer needs an ND filter
    Neutral Density filters are extremely useful in video and still photography applications when you want to control light and use lower shutter speeds. Check out Blackstone filters at http://www.winecountry.camera/ You can get 15% off of anything in the store by using offer code AOP on checkout. Typically in video you will get the best motion estimation by using a 180 degree shutter. This is double the frame-rate of your video clip. In still photography and landscapes you want to be able to capture motion of things like clouds or water for a dramatic effect. All ND filters are not created equal. Color casts are a huge problem as are distortions from glass inconsistencies. I use only Blackstone filters for this reason. Music is from Epidemic Sound. Photo Assignment #15 :: They're Back!!!

    Photo Assignment #15 :: They're Back!!!
    Photo Assignments are back! Photo Assignment #15 is going to be fairly open, but you'll be shooting Holga style. Want to shoot on a real Holga? You can get one here: https://amzn.to/2CSIyt4 Of course you don't have to use a Holga - you can use your digital camera as well - just remember these are the rules. • Turn off Autofocus and no Viewfinder - you'll use your eyes and zone focusing • Aperture will be set to f/8 only • Shutter speed can be either 1/30 or 1/60 sec • ISO must be 100 or 400 Those are your choices. You'll need to understand light and how you can work within those parameters. It won't be easy! And finally share your work on Instagram or Twitter with the hashtag #Photoassignments - you can also tag me, @tedforbes as well. Music is from Epidemic Sound. In the cockpit with photographer Frank Crebas

    In the cockpit with photographer Frank Crebas
    Frank Crebas is an aviation photographer based in Amsterdam. This video was produced in partnership with Sony. Sony brought us all out to the Miramar Air Show in San Diego to photograph with the A9, Sony FE 400mm f/2.8 and Sony FE 100-400 G Master lenses. I got a chance to sit down with Frank Crebas on the second day we were there to talk about his career and approach to aviation photography. Frank is one of the world's premiere aviation photographers and one of the most prolific in the field. • How Frank started shooting airplanes • The first serious jobs • How to photograph in a cockpit • How to deal with glare in photography • How to deal with lighting conditions photographing an air show • Choreographing a photo shoot Music is from Epidemic Sound. Photographing the Blue Angels with the Sony A9

    Photographing the Blue Angels with the Sony A9
    I had the opportunity to photograph the Blue Angels at the Miramar air show this weekend when Sony flew me and several journalists to San Diego to work with the Sony A9 and the 400mm f/2.8 lens. I also had the privilege of learning from 2 of the finest aviation photographers working today - Frank Crebas and Larry Grace. They gave me some wonderful tips on how to shoot aviation in broad sunlight. The Sony A9 is simply outstanding. With its stacked CMOS sensor it is capable of shooting raw files at 20 frames a second with no blackout in the viewfinder. More importantly it can adjust the autofocus up to 60 times a second. It is one of the fastest and most powerful mirrorless cameras I have used to date. Music is from Epidemic Sound. If you need music for your videos, Epidemic is simply the best in the business. Fujifilm GFX 50R and 100S announcements!

    Fujifilm GFX 50R and 100S announcements!
    Fujifilm have announced the GFX 50R and the Fujifilm 100S concept cameras. Both of these are medium format. The GFX 50R is a compact, "rangefinder" style version of their previous camera - the Fujifilm GFX 50S. It brings over the same sensor in a much smaller and more portable configuration. The price point is considerably lower as well. Also added is Bluetooth integration. The Fujifilm GFX 100S concept is a camera to be released in 2019. This is where things get particularly interesting. The 100S will feature a 102 megapixel sensor, IBIS (in-body image stabilization) as well as 4k video and phase detection autofocus across the entire sensor. I'm guessing this will be an entirely new sensor likely not built by Sony. But my favorite announcement today is the Fujifilm partnership with Phase One in the Capture One software. Capture One has not supported any medium format cameras other than Phase One until now. This is a huge step forward. I love Capture One and use it all the time. But this has been a stumbling block for Capture One - they have to support all cameras if they intend to gain traction in the raw image editor application space. Over view of Fujifilm announcements: • Fujifilm GFX 50R - smaller rangefinder style body, 50 megapixel sensor • Fujifilm GFX 100S - Concept camera to be released in 2019 • Capture One support for Fujifilm Medium Format Cameras and film profiles Music is from Epidemic Sound. Why you won't succeed in photography

    Why you won't succeed in photography
    Success requires work. It also requires understanding how to get people's attention. I got a question from a viewer about how to succeed in photography. This individual is somewhat frustrated and its completely understandable. I personally believe that everyone in the world has the power to do anything they want. There are countless people who are proof of this. But the bottom line is that most can't/don't/won't which is why my advice should fire you up even more. • Define what you are trying to succeed at specifically. Chase that goal, but don't close yourself off to other opportunities. • Be careful about "creating work for yourself" • Do the work. This is the most obvious, but its the most difficult. Its also what makes people ultimately give up. Do the work. Music is from Epidemic Sound. If you need music for your videos, Epidemic is simply the best in the business. What about the Fujifilm 16mm f/1.4 compared to the Sony 24mm f/1.4 G Master

    What about the Fujifilm 16mm f/1.4 compared to the Sony 24mm f/1.4 G Master
    Is the Fujifilm 16mm f/1.4 comparable to the new Sony 24mm f/1.4? In short, its a tough comparison. They both have the same field of view in the end result - one is full frame and the other is designed for APS-C mirrorless. But physically they are 2 different focal lengths. These mean different designs, different intent and so on. But since we're talking about the Fujinon 16mm f/1.4, this is one of my favorite lenses of all time regardless of system. Its an incredible wide angle with excellent contrast, sharpness and bokeh. It has a minimum focusing distance of just under 6 inches and is fast enough to use in low light and get great results. • 13 elements in 11 groups • 2 aspherical and 2 extra low dispersion elements • f/1.4 to f/16 aperture range (22 stops) • 1/3 stop increments • 9 blades (rounded diaphragm opening) • Focus Range – 15cm to infinity • filter size - 67mm • Autofocus Motor: DC coreless Music is from Epidemic Sound. How good are Sony lenses?

    How good are Sony lenses?
    Sony is making some of the best full frame mirrorless cameras in the world. How do their lenses stack up to the other options? The last 2 mirrorless lenses that Sony has produced have shown us the direction things will be going in the next few years. Not only are the designs extremely innovative but also the materials used in these lenses. Sony have a method of producing XA elements, or Extreme Aspherical elements in a way where they can both dial in the clarity of bokeh in an image and also reduce sagittal flaring issues in astro photography. XA elements are made by molding glass, not grinding. So there is a much greater control to smoothness to tolerances of 0.01 microns. Bokeh is also controlled with the use of 11 aperture blades over the traditional 9 (Canon uses 8). This allows you to maintain a circular aperture when stopping down slightly to get a better optical performance out of the lens. And finally Sony has created essentially a solid state camera with the development of direct drive super sonic wave motors that are used in the autofocus system. This allows for faster, more accurate and quiet autofocus. Music is from Epidemic Sound. If you need music for your videos, Epidemic is simply the best in the business. $1399 Sony Masterpiece :: 24mm f/1.4 G Master

    $1399 Sony Masterpiece :: 24mm f/1.4 G Master
    The Sony FE 24mm f/1.4 G Master is the 30th lens in the Sony native E-mount lineup designed for full frame alpha cameras. Following the 400mm f/2.8, it uniquely designed both optically and mechanically. The optic design delivers both an extremely high resolution and a smooth and gorgeous depth of field. Its a compact and lightweight addition to the G-Master line and features a Direct Drive SSM focusing system for greater thrust, accuracy and high speed compatibility for video and continuous shooting on cameras such as the Sony A9. • 13 elements in 10 groups • 11 blade circular diaphragm • 2 XA elements • 3 ED elements • 9.4 inch minimum focusing distance • light weight and compact Music is from Epidemic Sound. Deepest Pixels :: Leica SL first look

    Deepest Pixels :: Leica SL first look
    This week Leica sent me the Leica SL and the 24-90mm f/2.8-4 lens to check out. I want to share with you a few first impressions - this thing is a tank. The Leica SL is a full frame, mirrorless camera with a 24 megapixel sensor. It shoots 4k/30p video. It also features a beautifully minimal interface, joystick and a .8x magnification viewfinder. And its heavy. Very heavy. Heavy pixels. However the image quality is simply outstanding. Its a Leica and they have a long history of making some of the most beautiful lenses ever produced so I'm super excited to share this with you over the next 2 weeks. • Leica SL (Typ 601) • Leica Vario-Elmarit-SL 24-90mm f/2.8-4 ASPH. zoom lens • 24 megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor • Leica Maestro II Image Processor • 14-bit • Internal DCI 4k Video • L-log Gama • 11fps burst rate • 33 frame buffer depth • ISO 50-50000 • 1/250 second flash sync Music is from Epidemic Sound. Bokeh

    Bokeh
    Apple announced 3 new phones today - the iPhone Xs, iPhone Xs Max and the iPhone XR. There doesn't seem to be any upgrades to the cameras in these phones, but what actually impressed me is the processing power. Apple has introduced the new A12 Bionic sensor with the next-generation Neural Engine. There is a 50% graphics boost, 15% performance core boost, and 50% lower power usage. Apple is now claiming 5 trillion calculations per second. This is going to make things really interesting if we can get past portrait mode and see what 3rd parties such as Adobe will do. Lightroom Mobile is getting closer to what the desktop version can do and this performance boost is a big game changer. Also noteworthy is the new Super Retina display, advanced facial recognition, depth control and of course… lots of bokeh. Watch the video to… • Watch Phil Schiller talk about Bokeh • Understand deeper pixels • Be tempted to buy a new phone • See how lenses are much like cheese Music is from Epidemic Sound. What they got wrong

    What they got wrong
    There is an enormously missed opportunity in the world of photography today. We have more technology than ever before and we don't do very much with it. This week we saw 3 major announcements, the Nikon Z7 and Z6, the Canon EOS R and the Fujifilm X-T3. In the history of photography I've never seen a marketing blitzkrieg like we've seen over the last few weeks. And the funny thing is people respond not by making amazing things, but by fighting on the internet. Canon invites us to be part of the revolution. Lets look at some actual revolutionary moments in photography. Music is from Epidemic Sound. If you need music for your videos, Epidemic is simply the best in the business. Fujifilm nailed this…

    Fujifilm nailed this…
    Fuji has announced the Fujifilm X-T3, their latest X-Mount, APS-C flagship camera. They have absolutely nailed it. This camera looks incredible. The X-T3 features not only a new sensor, the Fujifilm X-Trans 4, but also the new X-Processor 4 which is both more powerful and more energy efficient. They've designed this new sensor with 425 phase-detection autofocus points that cover the entire frame. They've also delivered a mirrorless camera that shoots 4k/60p video at 10bit. New Features: • Low illuminance limit of PDAF is now -3EV from -1EV • New Sports Finder Mode – features blackout-free, high-speed continuous shooting (30fps crop electronic shutter, 11 fps mechanical shutter) • New Pre-shooting function, starts recording when you press the shutter half way (up to 20 frames pre, 20 frames actual, total of 40 frames to play with) • Standard ISO: 160 to 12800 • EVF – 0.5 type organic finder – 3.69 million dots – 0.75x • LCD screen – 3.0, 1.04 million dots • 3 way tilt screen (no forward facing) • touch panel • 4k / 60p • 4:2:0 10 bit video in camera • 4:2:2 10 bit HDMI output • Hybrid Log Gamma by firmware update in 2018 • Simultaneous film simulation/f-log output by firmware in 2018 Music is from Epidemic Sound. Oh Canon…

    Oh Canon…
    Today Canon released the Canon EOS R, full-frame mirrorless camera. This is an entirely new lens mount for Canon and so an entirely new system. Canon has been pretty quiet over the last few years and Sony has made it quite obvious that the competition has fallen behind. Canon also announced 4 lenses - a 24-105mm, 28-70mm, 35mm and a 50mm. Is the Canon system enough to compete with the Nikon Z6 and Z7? Does it compete with Sony? Lets break it down. The Canon EOS R • 30MP full frame sensor • Dual Pixel Raw, micro-adjustment, bokeh shift and ghosting reduction • 5,655 selectable AF points • 8fps burst rate with one-shot AF • 5fps burst rate with servo AF/AE • 1 SD card slot – UHS-II compatible • UGD 4k up to 25/30p – 1.6x crop • Canon log profile • 4k uncompressed 10 bit HDMI output • HDR movie, 4k Time-lapse movie • Focus Peaking / Focus Distance Indicator • 3.1″ vari-angle, 2.1 million dot LCD with touch control • GPS via phone app • Wi-fi/Bluetooth • LP-E6 / LP-E6N Battery And unfortunately way too many "gotchas" on these features. Fujifilm X-T100 :: The New Best Deal In Photography?

    Fujifilm X-T100 :: The New Best Deal In Photography?
    Fujifilm were kind enough to send me the new X-T100 to check out. This might be the best deal in photography. The Fujifilm X-T100 is a budget conscious, mirrorless camera designed to fit Fujifilm X-Mount lenses. Clearly there are some things that are held back to make this camera affordable but almost all the features and the image quality you expect from Fujifilm is there. I was actually extremely impressed with the X-T100. If you're on a budget, its a great camera to start with and spend the extra money on lenses. • Mirrorless APS-C camera design • Fuji Image Quality is on point • Supports XF lenses and leaves money left over to buy them • Excellent all around camera for photographers at any level Music is from Epidemic Sound. Dear Nikon

    Dear Nikon
    This week, Nikon is expected to announce their new full frame mirrorless system with the Nikon Z7 and the Nikon Z6. Over the last few years we've seen Fujifilm and Sony develop some really interesting mirrorless camera systems. Panasonic and Olypmus have had mirrorless cameras with their micro 4/3 system. The next month is going to be very interesting in terms of camera announcements from Nikon, followed immediately by Canon and then rumors say Sony will follow with another as well. But the interesting newcomer is Nikon. Nikon failed with their last mirrorless attempt - the Nikon 1. So far we know there are likely 2 camera bodies they will announce as well as 3 lenses and an adapter for the older F mount lenses. Will this be enough to compete with Sony and Fuji who already have fully developed systems? These are my thoughts as to what Nikon need to succeed: • Develop a sensor that gives us dynamic range like we're seeing with Medium Format Cameras • Develop an autofocus system that competes with Sony's Eye AF • Develop some actually interesting lenses, not just generic f/2.8 zooms • Provide some legitimate video options - 4k, high frame rate, log profiles and 10-bit. • Find a niche and figure out what will make people want to use Nikon This video is sponsored by Squarespace.
