    The Best Films of 2021

    The Best Films of 2021
2021. Another year down, COVID is still raging, and things are looking pretty grim for movie theaters out there. The pandemic has transformed the cinematic landscape into a tempest of uncertainty, with only the most gargantuan of tentpoles being sure things at the box office. But just because profitability is scarce doesn’t mean movies are dead. Just to name a few gems, this year saw lush Arthurian legend come to life, a new freewheeling Paul Thomas Anderson flick, Ridley Scott in his element, and fresh bloodcurdling horrors. Tune in and follow along as Jeff, Derek, and Amir count down their lists.

"Get Back": Breaking Down Breaking Up

"Get Back": Breaking Down Breaking Up
What did the Paloma Media crew do after stuffing their maws with Thanksgiving pie? Went home and watched part I of the just-released Beatles' documentary, "Get Back." Matt Welch and Nancy Rommelmann talk about which Beatle was unimpeachable, which a scold, which a love-bug, and which one was just stoned. Bonus: Matt tries to get Nancy to cry talking about the movie "Pig.

Episode 176: Shelter en Place Movie Review: Pig, with guest critics Allison & Matt Robicelli

Episode 176: Shelter en Place Movie Review: Pig, with guest critics Allison & Matt Robicelli

For the first time in 2021, we're bringing back our pandemic-era movie-discussion series Shelter en Place, with guest critics Allison and Matt Robicelli. This time 'round, Andrew, Allison and Matt engage in a SPOILER-FILLED (don't say we didn't warn you) discussion of the surprisingly terrific Nicolas Cage vehicle Pig. Is this film, whose trailer was greeted with derisive laughter earlier this summer, one of the best movies ever made about chefs and restaurants? Listen in and find out.

    THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW:

Andrew is a writer by trade. If you'd like to support him, there's no better way than by purchasing his most recent book, The Dish: The Lives and Labor Behind One Plate of Food (October 2023), about all the key people (in the restaurant, on farms, in delivery trucks, etc.) whose stories and work come together in a single restaurant dish.

We'd love if you followed us on Instagram

Please also follow Andrew's real-time journal of the travel, research, writing, and production of/for his next book The Opening (working title), which will track four restaurants in different parts of the U.S. from inception to launch.

    "Pig"

    "Pig"
This week we're discussing director Michael Sarnoski's feature debut, Pig, Starring Nicolas Cage and Alex Wolff. A film that careens right when you think it will bank left, Pig is a tremendously tender and heartfelt film - the anti John Wick. Yes, both films feature a grizzled professional coming out of retirement to get justice for a lost animal companion, but that's where comparisons end. What did we think of the latest Nicolas Cage performance? Tune in and find out!

    Pig

    Pig

Sit down for a spell and enjoy a meal with us. That's right, we're doing a special bonus review of Pig, a new psychological drama from Neon starring Nicolas Cage, Alex Wolff, and Adam Arkin. Directed by Michael Sarnoski in his feature film debut, Pig is definitely not your average film, and we definitely have a lot to go full ham about with this one.
