Stealth and Stories from the Davidson River with Kevin Howell

Our destination is Western North Carolina and the world-famous Davidson River with competition angler, author, and fly designer, Kevin Howell, owner of Davidson River Outfitters.  Nestled in the Pisgah National Forest, the Davidson is known for great public access, beautiful scenery, and large, weary trout requiring light tippets and an ultra-stealthy approach.

Kevin has been guiding these waters for 40 years, has been featured on Trout Unlimited Television and Fly Fishing America, won fly fishing competitions, and authored or co-authored 5 books on fly fishing and fly tying.  Kevin gives an overview of the Davidson, his top fly patterns, and shares some great stories of corn liquor runners, fishing with his dad, and trout so big his clients run for cover.   Bonus: insider tips on other top streams in the area.

#30 On Vision Quest with Sonya Louise in the Emerald Forest

#30 On Vision Quest with Sonya Louise in the Emerald Forest

    Your Creative Sparks:

    • We can ENVISION with more CLARITY when we QUEST into the unknown.
    • One thing that NATURE TEACHES us is how to be in FLOW, able to respond JOYFULLY to life’s UNPREDICTABILITY.
    • Not only can you alleviate physical problems by immersing yourself Nature, but you can tap into ANCIENT WISDOM, where REAL HEALING can occur.

Immerse yourself in the ancient realm of the Pisgah National Forest with Lobsterbird and Sonya Louise. Explore vision quest, earth medicine, forest bathing and more as these two shapeshifters wander together under craggy rock overhangs, among the stone people, squirrels, and fern angels, skittering over fluorescent mosses and through the faerylands. BEing in Nature bridges the practical physical aspects of ourSelves with the deeper, older elemental Spirits within. Leave us a Rating & Review!

    Your Travelogue

    • “Divine disorder” gave Sonya the permission to follow the call in her heart, removing her from struggle and striving and all the things she thought she HAD to do… All the things that kept her from doing what she felt she really wanted to be doing, which was to be in the earth. She finally said Yes to that call, threw a few things in her car, and started GOing, pursuing her own unique personal pilgrimage. [3:36]
    • How Sonya’s story became a book, in response to the hundreds of other women who express an inner longing for a solo travel adventure of their own. [8:38]
    • Sonya discovered that her “wandering in the wilderness” was actually a Vision Quest. “My travel wasn’t just about being on vacation and disappearing. I was questing.” Normal every day life, our habits and patterns can obscure real *vision* from us. We can envision with more clarity when we quest into the unknown. [14:20]
    • The scope of Sonya’s work has become much more profound that simple survival tips. “I realized early on in my journey that Nature was communicating with me and teaching me things.” She now passes that teaching on to others, showing women more than just logistically and physically how to be “out there” in a way that is smart and safe, but how to connect on a deep spiritual level and tap into the myriad of energies present and available there. [18:41]
    • “I think of myself as a docent,” says Sonya. “When you go to a museum, the docent helps you understand the exhibit on a deeper level… I suggest ways that you can interact with this exhibit to help open yourself to new perspective and possibilities.” [26:00]
    • From a purely physical level, Sonya’s work is akin Shinrin-yoku, which means “forest bathing”. This form of nature therapy originated in Japan and has a wide variety of scientifically proven health benefits. For women being called into the forest, it is likely their bodies are also calling out for healing. [33:53]
    • When you give yourself to things that are not in alignment with who you really are and what you really want, you are literally giving your power away. How can you begin to take your power back? [45:00]

    Links and resources:

    • Lobsterbird’s new book: Level Up: Power Practices for Spiritual Superabundance by Sophia Remolde
    • Go: Solo Travel for Women by Sonya Louise offers more than just a collection of her travel stories. In it, she offers persuasive evidence that taking a solo travel adventure is not only smart and safe, but can also be the most loving thing you can do for yourself, your relationships and the earth. Includes a detailed roadmap for how any woman can GO on a solo travel adventure of her own.
    • Shinrin-yoku (森林浴) is a term that means “taking in the forest atmosphere” or “forest bathing”. It was developed in Japan during the 1980s and has become a cornerstone of preventive health care and healing in Japanese medicine. Researchers primarily in Japan and South Korea have established a robust body of scientific literature on the health benefits of spending time under the canopy of a living forest.

#21 Lobsterbird on Aesthetics in the Pisgah National Forest

#21 Lobsterbird on Aesthetics in the Pisgah National Forest

    Your Creative Sparks:

    • CREATIVITY is the spark of ENLIGHTENMENT.
    • MAKING ART is creating the opportunity for ENERGY to flow through the artist and out into form.
    • We are ALL MAKING ART together, creating this giant canvas, this giant performance we call LIFE.

The magical song of the Lobsterbird calls to us from the heart of the emerald forest, where she collaborates with Nature to help us bend our awareness around the concept of “Aesthetics”. There are ways of knowing other than our physical senses. Our understanding of who and what we are is deepening. Paying more attention to the energetic qualities of our existence is accelerating and elevating our human consciousness. Letting go of aesthetics is another key to expansion and enlightenment. Leave us a Rating & Review!

    Your Travelogue

    • This episode was inspired by our podcast manager trying to wrap her head around the concept of “Aesthetics”, as presented in a previous episode with Gerald Busby. [3:06]
    • Sacred Survival School? Sonya Louise is helping Sophia prepare for her Vision Quest, helping hone both the practical and mystical skills she will need to rely on. While here, Sophia decides to get Nature’s input on the concept of “Aesthetics”. [5:15]
    • Gerald’s ideas on “Aesthetics” as understood by Lobsterbird: i believe he means creating a world in which things look and seem a certain way. that when we put a layer of opinion on anything, it becomes an aesthetic choice we make, instead of it simply existing as an amorphous, undefinable energetic entity (which it is at its very essence). in short, aesthetics = the world we perceive to be real. [8:24]
    • Aesthetics and Artists: An artist who has been working on their craft for a very long time will develop an “aesthetic”. Over time, the art that is produced is a product of this one stream of consciousness, an energy stream that is embodied in a person – the artist – and so similar themes and patterns will come up, creating a certain essence of it because of the imprint of the artist on it. [10:45]
    • We perceive things in 3D form, as material objects. We are under the assumption that we are touching and feeling and sensing everything exactly as it is. For instance, we perceive each other as having a specific human form. But we are actually just a channel for energy flowing into form, and our consciousness chooses that form. [16:40]
    • Is a rock really a rock? Gerald Busby’s “Aesthetics” also talked about the “context” we put on things. Our thoughts about it offers context, and without that context, the form would simply dissolve into energy. Without assigning it form and meaning, the thing itself wouldn’t exist. [19:29]
    • To really BE: If presence is our power, and perception is our power, than we can enter a process of letting go of aesthetics... letting go of the meaning of things, especially the meaning of things that we have been given by others. [24:50]
    • Buddhism and the Five Skandhas: How sensing> feeling> perception> formation> and consciousness can be summed up in poop, and why that stinks.  [28:04]
    • Art is a representation of what we do with our consciousness all the time. [34:54]
    • When we go out into Nature, a quietness descends in our mind. There’s a power that the earth has to somehow unravel the conditioning of context. We can tap into something here, a different way of being, untainted by our need to exert our human influence on it. [37:17]
    • Practicum! Go out into nature. Be. Notice the sensations. Shift your senses. Allow your Self the space to sense without putting any kind of label on it, without having a reaction to it, without telling yourself whether it is good or bad. Allow your consciousness to experience this world without labeling it. [40:25]
