Tame your ego and overcome self-doubt with one practice // Dharma Choice Phap Tuyen & Zip Nguyen (Part 2)

Many people find it surprising when I say I don’t often go to temples or read spiritual books, even though deep down, I know that I’m very spiritual and have been practicing mindfulness intuitively for a long time. While I’ve heard of the Blue Cliff Monastery for the last eight years and had always wanted to visit, it hadn’t been at the forefront of my mind until last weekend when I finally made the trip... and despite the rain, I’m so glad I did! I’ll never forget the song ‘Understanding and Compassion’ (Hiểu và Thương) that we sang together as a community, the mindful eating with the tastiest vegetarian food, sharing my learnings with Dharma Choice (Thầy Pháp Tuyển), and learning from him as we walked around the monastery. This conversation, like most of those that I’ve shared on this channel, came together in the spur of the moment ☺️

Watch the full Part 2 of our conversation to learn about the practice of non-self that can help you both tame your ego while also overcoming self-doubt ✨

Bloom in Crisis is the embodiment of hope — it is a belief, a practice, a state of being that empowers you to skillfully regulate emotions, build spiritual resilience, enhance self-awareness, unleash the potential of your mind, foster a grateful heart, cultivate joy, nurture positive energy, promote inner peace, grow self-compassion and compassion for others, embrace the present moment, derive wisdom from introspection, transform pain into grace, recognize positive possibilities even in adversity, and actively shape your narrative, ultimately leading to a happy and fulfilled life (with a touch of style!)

Welp... you're probably not going to remember all of these, and neither am I (!) which is why internalizing the concept of "bloom in crisis" instead of trying to memorize what it means is important. Luckily, we can all do it by practicing consistently.

While I'm incredibly grateful for my journey, I know firsthand how painful and lonely it is to go through tough times alone — it urges me to give back and help others as much as I can in my lifetime. Bloom in Crisis has been transforming me and many others for the better, and I would love for you to give it a try!

Believing that everyone is a bloomer and we #bloomincrisis together, I founded Bloom in Crisis to share with you how I practice it and what I've learned throughout my journey, which, I hope, will be helpful for you in yours.

    16. Vacation of Life

    16. Vacation of Life

Vacations are interesting things. They are like little life microcosms. In most instances we attempt to vacate our regular lives, jobs and responsibilities. Yet we find pretty quickly that we cannot escape ourselves. Sometimes in an attempt to be free of stress for a short time, we end up creating a lot more of it through our planning and expectations. We make a plan and we want to stick to it. A lot of the time we go into them having certain expectations of people, locations, experiences and accommodations. In my case on this trip, much like the beginning of life, I didn’t choose where I was going or who I was going with. As I was invited on this trip, it was a bit easier to sit back and enjoy the ride. I decided that I would use this vacation to practice mindfulness. To be present, and to be okay with what is in every moment.

Quoted in this episode is a passage from Many Lives, Many Masters by Brian L. Weiss

The Politics of Being: Wisdom and Science for the new world with Dr Thomas Legrand

The Politics of Being: Wisdom and Science for the new world with Dr Thomas Legrand

Holding a Ph.D. in (Ecological) Economics and having studied international development, political science, and management, Thomas Legrand works in the field of sustainability for UN agencies, private companies, and NGOs. His focus is on forest conservation, climate change, sustainable finance, and organizational transformation.

His spiritual journey began at the age of 23 with an encounter with native spirituality in Mexico, before embracing the wisdom of a wide range of traditions and practices, including meditation, energetic healing and Tai-chi-chuan. He lives with his wife and their two young daughters near Plum Village, the monastery of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh in the South West of France, his country.

His spiritual search, his thought as a social scientist and his professional experience have gradually converged on the importance of spiritual wisdom in humanity’s ongoing transition. Searching for a way to mainstream this understanding in the political and sustainability conversation, he has dedicated much of the last 10 years to researching and reflecting how we can radically rethink our model of development.

The result is his book, 'The Politics of Being: Wisdom and Science for a new Development Paradigm' which synthesises so many of the foundations of Accidental Gods - the merging of a universal spirituality, grounded in connection with the web of life, and a political and social framework for a new way of organising ourselves and each other.

In this wide-ranging conversation, we discuss how Thomas first encountered shamanic spirituality and then explore the ideas that are the backbone of his book: how do we shape our new reality and, crucially, who is already doing so?

    15. From the Beginning

    15. From the Beginning

A few years ago I was having a difficult time in my mind. My life on paper was great, but I was constantly being bombarded with thoughts of inadequacy, meaninglessness, and unimportance.

I had heard the founder of Headspace, a meditation app, in a radio interview some months earlier and had downloaded the app upon his promise of making life a little bit better if I dedicated at least five minutes a day to mindful meditation. I wasn’t able to find even 5 minutes to try this app out that had sat unopened on my phone for two or three months, until one day when I was finally fed up with my minds constant chatter. I put in some headphones, opened the app and started the 5 minute animated introduction.

This is how I stumbled upon a daily mindful meditation practice.

    14. Quality of Life

    14. Quality of Life

Don’t cheat yourself. Learn to enjoy every moment. Learn to be present in the now. If you can make these slight shifts in your mental attitudes you will regret nothing. You will have lived life to its fullest. The quality of your life will meet exactly the quality of your attention now. If you choose to rush through, that’s what you’ll get. If you choose to be annoyed, that’s what you’ll get. If you choose to hate, dislike, distrust, that’s what you’ll get. The energy with which you choose to live your life is the energy you’re putting out into the world and the world will respond in kind. Like finds like. Catch yourself when you get caught up in poor attitudes, reframe the situation and do what you need to do with gratitude, compassion and love. Learn what life has to teach. This is how to lift yourself and everything around you. This is the real revolution. But only you can make the choice, one moment at a time.

In the words of the late great Ram Dass, “Be here now.”

    Meditation: Mindfulness of Breathing

    Meditation: Mindfulness of Breathing

I have been asked to record a few guided meditations from some of you who listen, so here is the first of them. This is a meditation from Noah Levine's Refuge Recovery World Services' (RRWS) program. I highly recommend the book; Refuge Recovery: A Buddhist Path to Recovery From Addiction to anyone struggling with addictive behaviors of any kind. Thanks to my good friend who lent his copy to me. I'm forever grateful.

    From the back the book:

"Refuge Recovery is a Buddhist-oriented, nontheistic recovery program that does not ask anyone to believe anything, only to trust the process and do the hard work of recovery. In fact, no previous experience or knowledge of Buddhism is required.  Recovery is possible, and this book provides a systematic approach to treating and recovering from all forms of addictions. When sincerely practiced, the program will ensure a full recovery from addiction and a lifelong sense of well-being and happiness."

NOAH LEVINE, M.A., has been using Buddhist practices to recover from addiction since 1988. He is the founding teacher of Against the Stream Buddhist Meditation Society. Visit the author online at www.refugerecovery.org

#100 - Three Minute Thursday: Purpose and Pausing

#100 - Three Minute Thursday: Purpose and Pausing

Welcome to our weekly segment, "Three Minute Thursday"  where host Pooja Mottl highlights a piece of wisdom she has come across from her own readings, or shares an inspirational anecdote or insight that can help you lead a more calm and rooted life.

    --

"The purpose of life is a life of purpose” concludes author Robbin Sharma (Monk Who Sold His Ferrari). But what is your purpose? If you don’t know, you’re no alone. Most people fly through life existing but never living, going through the motions, doing what they think they’re supposed to be doing but never really taking the time to figure out if that aligns with what truly energizes and fulfills them.

If you want to know one thing about your purpose, its about being selfless. Living and doing things that go beyond your individual gain.

But to get to the heart of your unique purpose, you’ll have to put in the effort. You’ll have to take time out life to find it. And one thing that helps is silence. Often, when we get rid of the noise, the conversations, the technology, and all the stimulations of the material world, our mind calms down just enough for it to reveal to us what it is that we’re here on this planet for. What is it that our talents and capabilities are meant to work on? What is it that energizes us, uplifts us and fills us with joy? Often times, we can’t get these answers if we keep ourselves on the treadmill of life and reaching for distractions. What we need to do is find quiet. Make that time for quiet and it will help you find your purpose. Put it in your calendar if you need to. Turn off your phone – shut down your computer – sit alone with your thoughts. Calm your mind and give it the space it needs to reveal to you what it is that you’re here to selflessly do.

    13. Not Knowing

    13. Not Knowing

We know little to nothing about all of what is going on around us at any given moment. It is natural for us to want to make sense of the world, just spend some time with a curious child and you’ll see this natural tendency. Our desire for knowledge may take us further from the Eternal Tao, that which cannot be named. Perhaps this is because we begin to divide and categorize and label everything we see. We then create self and other, believing that we are separate.

    12. Doing Not Doing (Wei Wu Wei)

    12. Doing Not Doing (Wei Wu Wei)

Meditation is itself a practice in doing not doing. While it is true that meditation is an action which we perform, what we are really doing is absolutely nothing. This action of non-action can be difficult for many people to accept, especially in the west, where we have a difficult time just sitting and doing nothing.

#95 - Three Minute Thursday: Success for Wellbeing

#95 - Three Minute Thursday: Success for Wellbeing

Welcome to our weekly segment, "Three Minute Thursday"  where host Pooja Mottl highlights a piece of wisdom she has come across from her own readings, or shares an inspirational anecdote or insight that can help you lead a more calm and rooted life.

    --

In a fast-changing world, news about success runs rampant. It seems society wants to sell us it's own version of success and the fact is, most of us have bought into it.

If you’re connected to the internet, news about people achieving great wealth, respect or fame, grab your attention in the form of posts, tweets, headlines, and alerts. This kind of sensational success is more alluring and seemingly more accessible, than ever before in human history.

From unicorn founders to voyages into space, stories about success mesmerize us and seduce us into wanting it, and the herd mentality justifies this narrative and keeps it alive.

There’s nothing wrong with working hard for financial freedom and recognition from our peers – but what we’ve collectively done as a society…is taken success to a dangerous level in the context of our mental wellbeing.

Dangerous, because when we make the end game all about success – the fortune, the notoriety, the achievements - we make the biggest sacrifice: we give up our peace of mind.

See, when we’re driven by the promise that success will make our lives better, as the news and our culture want us to believe, we stop feeling grateful for what we have right now, a scientifically proven way to make our minds unhappy.

And in the competitive race for success, we feel inadequate until me make it, insignificant if we never do, and unsatisfied when we arrive, because hitting one benchmark only begins the chase for yet another.

To counter these emotions, we numb ourselves with food, with drugs, with shopping, with alcohol, with social media and by the dopamine hit that comes from just the idea that success can happen to me… if I just keep plugging away.

So today I’d like to offer you this advice with love and compassion – I want you to ask yourself: is my definition of success bringing me peace of mind at the end of my day? Does it give me energy or does it take it from me?

Does my definition of success help me sleep well at night? Does it make me the best colleague I can be? The best parent I can be?

These are the questions you must ask yourself to ensure a calm mind, which by the way, is the foundation necessary to unleash the genius within you.

In the coming days, I will be releasing a full length video to expand on the process I use, personally, to define success in a way that brings me inner peace. It has been inspired by the likes of legendary coach John Wooden, the work of essayist and philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson and the philosophy inherent in the Bhagavad Gita, the storied ancient Indian poem imbibed with time-honored wisdom . It will be both at my YouTube channel and on my social media channels. I truly hope these messages resonate with you and can add real value to your life.

Alan Watts has an analogy to life, or of living life rather, to that of dancing or playing music. He jokingly and rhetorically points out that the purpose of music is not the end of a composition. If it were, he says, the best composers would be the ones who played the fastest, who arrived at the end the quickest. We don’t go to a concert to see one final crescendo, one final crashing note. We enjoy the play of the music as it goes along. Likewise when we dance, the purpose is not to arrive at some specified point on the floor. The point of dancing is to dance. Life therefore is a playing of the music, the dancing the dance, and there is no point on the dance floor upon which we are supposed to arrive.

    10. Impermanence

    10. Impermanence

Today I wanted to point out some of the basic insights we might gain from meditation. Mainly the insight of impermanence. When we pay close enough attention, we can see that all things come and go, and we are not exempt from this truth. Our interests, our stuff, the weather, our feelings, even our knowledge and fears. Everything is subject to change. In reality this is what makes life enjoyable and interesting. There is simply nothing that impermanence doesn’t touch. Some might say that impermanence is the only permanent truth. So how can meditation help us to see this and live our lives accordingly?

Last week we premiered a compelling storytelling video entitled Self-Worth you can check it out now by searching Pooja Mottl and Calm & Free Podcast on LinkedIn or YouTube.

The essence of the message of this video is that in a world where we’re told to measure our worth by external benchmarks and accomplishments – like wealth and status – we end up on a never-ending, futile chase that leaves us burned out and discontented.

As the chase continues, we get less connected and more cynical. More fearful, less trusting. Less joyful, more lonely. More diseased, less healthy. More anxious, less at peace.

But the fact is, we’re not different than we entered this world as tiny, beautiful babies – we’re no less loved, we’re no less valid. It’s just the norms of society that change the very way we think about ourselves as adults – and it’s a racket.

Persian Poet Rumi so eloquently advised to: “Look inside yourself, everything that you want you already are.”

We are already enough – we don’t need to overwork ourselves to burnout and needlessly compare and compete. We are worthy just as we are.

I’ll leave you to contemplate on this most profound piece of wisdom and encourage you to watch the entire video on YouTube.

I wonder what our world would be like if everyone - especially tech moguls, founders, investors and alike - took this message to heart and put a brake on the never-ending chase – would society be less polarized? Would we be individually and collectively happier and healthier?
