To Warn or Not? The Ethical Dilemma of Content Creation

To Warn or Not? The Ethical Dilemma of Content Creation

Imagine you're crafting some fantastic content (as you do) and you stumble upon a topic that might be touchy for some. Do you slap on a trigger warning? Or let it ride? This was the big question of the day in this episode.

    The Real Deal with Triggers
Now, here's the thing. Our everyday lingo tosses around the word 'trigger' quite a bit. The expectation in some corners has become that anything potentially upsetting should be flagged as a ‘trigger’.

Dr Emily recently discussed this issue on an episode of ‘The Imperfects’.

It turns out, in the professional world, a trigger isn't just about getting upset. It's way deeper, linked with traumatic flashbacks for people with PTSD. It’s not about having an upsetting memory. It’s about reliving the trauma in your mind and body and not being able to tell that it’s not really happening now.

However, Dr Emily said that the research does not show that trigger warnings and avoidance doesn’t actually help. But exposure, in a caring environment, does.

    Finding That Sweet Spot
So, here's where my brain's been at: instead of strictly sticking to the term "trigger warning", maybe we just give our lovely listeners a sneak-peek of the content? It's kinda like, "Hey, here's what's coming up! Feel like diving in?" This way, they can decide if they’re in the mood for it.

    All About the Heart ❤️
For all my fellow content creators out there, isn't it all about the heart behind what we do? I genuinely believe that if we come from a place of love, respect, and genuine care for our audience, they'll feel it. As I mentioned on my pod: "I care about you". And I truly do.

    Let's Keep Chatting!
I'd absolutely love to hear your thoughts on this! How do you handle sensitive topics in your content? How do you make sure your listeners or readers feel respected and cared for? Hit me up in the comments or slide into my DMs.

Oh, and a little teaser – the next episode of 'Magnetic Pod' is all about 'glimmers'. Yep, those little things that light up our lives. Can't wait to share it with you!

Sending out all the good vibes,
    Olivia 🌼🎙️
