In this podcast episode, Brad Williams discusses the importance of preparing for monetization strategies in podcasting. He emphasizes the need to research competitors and explore various options before deciding on a specific monetization approach. Brad shares his own experience with starting a podcast and initially planning to monetize it through training clients using software called TrueCoach. However, he faced challenges such as charging too little and feeling disconnected from his clients compared to physical training in a gym setting. As a result, he postponed promoting his training services through the podcast.

Brad advises podcasters to focus on growth in the initial stages rather than rushing to sell products or services to their audience. He highlights the dislike many listeners have for ads, especially when they are irrelevant to the podcast's content. While ads can be effective for established podcasters, he recommends holding off on monetization until the podcast has gained significant traction and a loyal audience.

To prepare for monetization, Brad suggests analyzing competitors' approaches by examining their logos, titles, descriptions, and show notes to identify potential revenue sources. He mentions different monetization options such as selling physical products, affiliate marketing, Patreon donations, offering online training programs, creating masterclasses, writing books, providing executive coaching, and securing sponsorships. Brad also emphasizes the importance of not overwhelming listeners with ads and suggests placing call-to-action segments at the end of episodes to retain audience engagement.

He recommends using resources like Listen Notes to research successful podcasts in specific niches and learn from the top performers in the industry. By gathering ideas and understanding what works, podcasters can make informed decisions about their own monetization strategies. Ultimately, Brad advises podcasters to focus on building a strong foundation, producing quality content, and attracting a sizable audience before implementing monetization approaches.

In this podcast episode, Brad Williams discusses the importance of search engine optimization (SEO) for boosting the visibility and reach of a podcast. He acknowledges that he is not an expert in SEO but shares insights and tips he has gathered from professionals and networking groups.

Brad mentions the use of tools like SEO Moz and VidIQ to assess keyword rankings and optimize content accordingly. He emphasizes the significance of choosing relevant keywords that align with the podcast's target audience. For example, his podcast focuses on fitness for individuals over 40, so he uses keywords like "over 40 fitness" and "fitness over 40" in various elements such as podcast titles, descriptions, show notes, and website.

He also highlights the role of blogging in driving traffic to the podcast. Brad suggests creating blog posts for each podcast episode, using tools like Descript to generate transcripts, and utilizing chat GPT to summarize the transcripts automatically. These blog posts can be optimized with relevant meta-tags, including keywords related to the episode's content. Additionally, Brad explains how to add meta-tags and descriptions to the audio files using Descript or other free software.

Brad acknowledges that SEO takes time and emphasizes the importance of consistently producing quality content and growing a dedicated audience. He notes that podcast followers who actively listen to episodes have a higher conversion rate than social media followers. Brad concludes by mentioning that while he continues to learn and refine his SEO strategies with professional assistance, he offers free 15-minute consultations to help others in their podcasting journeys.

Overall, the episode provides practical tips and insights on leveraging SEO techniques, optimizing keywords, and using blogging to enhance a podcast's discoverability and audience engagement.

How to Perfect Your Show Notes and Boost Your Podcast Engagement

         1. Define the Purpose of Your Show Notes

The first step to creating great show notes is to define their purpose. Ask yourself what you want your show notes to accomplish. 3 Paragraphs max in my opinion.

    1. Use a Consistent Format

Consistency is key when it comes to show notes. Use a standard format for every episode to make it easy for your listeners to navigate your notes. Start with a brief introduction to your episode topic and guest, then provide a summary of the content. Use bullet points or numbered lists to break down complex ideas and highlight key takeaways. Use Google Drive to save all show notes in case your account gets deleted from your hosting platform,....like mine did with Buzzsprout.

    1. Include Relevant Links and Resources

One of the best ways to add value to your show notes is to include relevant links to what you were talking about during that episode.  Also, whatever the main CTA you are trying to get listeners to do, put these at the top of your show notes.  Make it easy!

    1. Promote Your Website and Social Media Channels

Your show notes are an excellent opportunity to promote your website and social media channels. Include links to your website, blog, and social media profiles in your show notes, and encourage your listeners to follow you for more great content. You can also include a call-to-action (CTA) to join your email list or leave a review of your podcast on Apple Podcasts. Do these at the bottom of your shown notes.
