We’ve got John Viney all the way from the UK. I’m quite pleased about this podcast because it’s my last podcast of the year and I’m about to get on an aeroplane and go visit. So really nice to have you here, John and come along.

    John Viney 0:16
Great to be here, Danny, thank

    Danny de Hek 0:18
So it’s seven o’clock Sunday night.

    John Viney 0:22
It is seven o’clock Sunday night in Wales in the UK.

    Danny de Hek 0:25
I have been to wales, was gonna tell you that we had a we checked before we went live, interestingly enough, is 20 past eight in Monday morning. So I often say to people that I live in the future. And you live in the past? Do you want to know anything? that’s gonna happen in the next few hours.

    John Viney 0:46
Oh, yeah. Do you know what the lottery numbers are?

    Danny de Hek 0:50
Ah, I won last week, I got $25. That’s good.

    John Viney 0:57
I don’t buy lottery tickets. So don’t worry.

    Danny de Hek 1:00
I was finding to join. I actually have about 107 to be exact questions, and I’ll pick that 12 questions. I don’t actually know what they are myself. And the idea behind this is just basically to have 12, unprompted questions that we ask along the way, and we don’t know where it’s going to take us. So I’ll get started with the very first question. If she’ll oops, and now I’m a bit dyslexic sometimes. So I have to repeat if you could share a meal with any individual living or dead? Who would it be? Who would you like to have a meal?

    John Viney 1:31
Wow, wait, share a meal? Um, boy, let me think I just need to have a little Think about

    Danny de Hek 1:40
    That. Okay.

    John Viney 1:43
Well, because my, because my, my grant, my father’s grant might Sorry, my father’s dad and mum died when he was young. I didn’t know my grandmother, my grandfather and my grandmother on my dad’s side. So I would love to sit down and talk to my grandfather. And my grandmother on my dad’s side, because they were living in London. They were what we call dragon bone men. So the the, you know, with a horse and cart, and I, I think they were really interesting characters. So I’d like to do that simply because it would give me some family background, some family knowledge, and I think it’d be entertaining. So they’re not famous, yet. I haven’t given the name of someone famous. But my, my grandfather and my grandmother on my dad’s side.

    Danny de Hek 2:47
Right, if you could live in a different period of time, rather than the one now where would you go back to?

I'm nervous, I'm so nervous, I've never done this before

    Danny de Hek 0:04
We're actually recording now. So welcome along Rob Woolley all the way from New Zealand, New Zealand, New Zealand. Excellent. Well, welcome along and thank you for coming along and I had the privilege of asking you 12 questions there. For those listeners who don't know what we're doing with our 12 questions. They are totally random. I actually have 107 questions, and we shuffle the pack. And then I ask them, so it keeps it in promptitude. So, Rob, how many languages do you speak? Question number one.

    Rob Woolley 0:35
One, and I struggle with that.

    Danny de Hek 0:37
I think you're a public speaker trainer and I believe that you speak two languages.

    Rob Woolley 0:43
What is the other one Danny?

    Danny de Hek 0:45
    Body language?

    Rob Woolley 0:47
Oh body language? I do try. I do try. I'm not too sure what it communicates half of the time, but I do try.

    Danny de Hek 0:54
Brilliant. So they do speak two languages we ever get asked that question again on a podcast, you'll know how to answer it professionally. What's the most daring thing you have ever done?

    Rob Woolley 1:05
Woah, I could read off 100 daring, things I haven't done, I'm not a very daring person actually, there we know how to take a once and the most extravagant food I had was wild pork sandwich.

    Danny de Hek 1:21
    Pork!

    Rob Woolley 1:24
    That was extravagant.

    Danny de Hek 1:27
That was the Hokitika Wildfoods Festival was it?

    Rob Woolley 1:29
I had wild pork, I had to force myself to eat that.

    Danny de Hek 1:35
You didn't try snails or anything unusual? Because that is the point of it.

    Rob Woolley 1:40
Well, you say like all these are kind of like live living things that you know had a life.

Whereas when you eat other forms of meat and animal products, you don't really think of them as being animals to you.

    Danny de Hek 1:53
    You know, I'm a vegan don't you.

I am going to get you to introduce yourself because I always get people’s names wrong.

    So you are

    Rebecca Davison 0:06
Rebecca Davison, thank you for having me Danny it’s great to be here.

    Danny de Hek 0:10
Good. Now we’re gonna get straight into it and muck around. We’ve got 12 questions which have been scrutinised by judges, and we’re gonna see how you answer them. I’m gonna ask you who what you do. So a nice simple one straightaway. What is your favourite book to read?

    Rebecca Davison 0:27
Oh, I’m a big reader. So that’s actually quite a hard question for me. Two books actually sprang to mind though, I love the book, The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, which is about the sheep herd that goes on a spiritual journey essentially. And it’s, you know, it’s quite well known that alchemists so if you haven’t read it, make sure you do the other one that I have read multiple times. And I do love a book that you go back to and read again and again and again. Because you pick up different information is the book The road less travelled. And that is actually by a psychiatrist called in Scott peak, who’s written quite a few books after that, but there’s probably his most Well, no, and that’s, you know, the first sentence in the book is life is difficult. So in the end, obviously, he helps us to unpack how you can navigate through life and take the road less travelled, which brings you more fulfilment and happiness. So yeah, those be my top two off the top of my head.

    Danny de Hek 1:32
Most people don’t believe me when I say it but I’ve never read a book of my life.

    Rebecca Davison 1:35
Wow. But I bet you absorb information like crazy though, right?

    Danny de Hek 1:40
I’ve discovered learning is I’ve got older and I love learning stuff in audiobooks is where I’m at at the moment. Yeah, yeah. Interesting enough. I went to a group called the speaker’s group, and they had people can do readings. And this guy was doing Mr. Penguin. They called Winnie the Pooh.

Oh, yes, yes one of my favourites

He was so animated and we were so quiet, quiet. And he was like, mesmerised. We were mesmerised by him doing it that he don’t we weren’t interested in what he was saying. Because, wow,

    Rebecca Davison 2:17
He’s a good storyteller. Because when he dipoto, you have to do all the voices did he do? He must have Yeah. So of course, you’d be listening very intently. Because that’s part of the process of the pleasure, especially of a book like that.

    Danny de Hek 0:00
Today, and now I'm going to give you your name, because I can't do it really well, because we have a common, some common interests that people will find out about the minute. They're what's your name?

    Jo McClelland-Phillips 0:11
    So I'm Jo McClelland-Phillips.

    Danny de Hek 0:14
Excellent. That made my life easier. So thank you very much. Jo, come on today to answer 12 questions with myself. And I'm looking forward to this. So the first one is a real simple question. I hope it's - Who is your hero?

    Jo McClelland-Phillips 0:27
Oh, golly, um, I have several, but I think probably the, the woman I go back to the most is Margaret Atwood, who's a Canadian author. She, she wrote on Handmaid's Tale, which a lot of people know because of the TV show. But we studied her in school, and I actually started off hating her in high school. And then I came back to her as an adult and realised how brilliant she is. And beyond her, her writing, which is sensational. I just love her works with the environment and women's rights and being Canadian, and from same part of Canada's myself, I really just enjoy her and love her. And I'm always taking notice of what she's doing.

    Danny de Hek 1:14
Because you're Canadian, and you're living in Australia.

    Jo McClelland-Phillips 1:17
I am Canadian living in Australia. Yes.

    Danny de Hek 1:20
It's a story in itself. I'll go straight into question number two, what makes you laugh the most.

    Jo McClelland-Phillips 1:27
I'm myself, actually, I'm always laughing at myself in good and bad ways. So I tend to make jokes that no one else seems to get, which I think are hilarious. And I make a lot of mistakes. And I mess up a lot, which, when I was younger, would make me really embarrassed and I get really self conscious. But having that my husband who finds the joy and the humour in mistakes, he just, I'll say something that's upside down and backwards. And he'll go, you just say that I'm like, Yeah, I was kind of hoping he missed that one. I was kind of hoping he would just go. But it never does. He always hears it. And it's really taught me to laugh at myself. So yeah, probably me.

    Danny de Hek 2:13
Because of dyslexia, I can value that as well. I think you got to have a sense of humour when you're wrong, and I got away with it.

12 Questions 'How To Be Brilliant' Michael Heppell

You're listening to Danny, on WHAT : DE HEK podcast. This is the place where I share my experience, knowledge and skills.

    Transcribed by Otter

    Danny de Hek 0:01
Welcome along Michael Heppell. I've got your name right. Usually I get people to introduce themselves because they can't. So we've got Michael all the way from the UK. We just had a bit of a chat before we went live. And he said that it's nice talking to people on the bottom of the earth or hanging on for dear life. We will get straight into it. We got 12 questions they kind of random I know what they are, but I don't know what the next question is. So the first question is, what was your first job?

    Michael Heppell 0:31
I was a roofing contractor, because my dad was a roofing contractor. And he said, when I was nine years old, son, one day this will all be yours. And when you're nine years old, the prospect of owning two vans and six ladders is quite exciting, Danny. So I was like, Oh, I'm going to be a roofer. So I left school as quickly as I could. I left school when I was 15. And I started to be a roofer. And after about a week, I realised that made a terrible decision. Definitely, definitely should not have decided to be a roofer. So I am so then I did I did the job, but I did it for six years. Didn't apprenticeship learned how to put roofs on and then started to follow my passion. So that was the first job I was a roofer. Like if you would like somebody to come along, give you a nice job with a roof estimates are always free.

    Danny de Hek 1:30
My father, my stepfather was a painter and I finished up being a house painter, the ten years.

    Michael Heppell 1:35
    There you go.

    Danny de Hek 1:36
You have to follow your family instinct sometimes, but for a week well done.

    Michael Heppell 1:43
It was a week. It was a week that I before we asked, I didn't want to do it. But I did it for six years. I was 22 when I stopped.

    Danny de Hek 1:52
Oh, any mishaps along the way because

    Michael Heppell 1:55
There are loads loads. I had a really bad fall once. I am actually the weird thing was I once fell off a roof that was three storeys high, fell right from the top landed in the garden and there wasn't anything not a scratch. I looked at I looked at my mates. And they were just all absolutely double up laughing. They thought it was hilarious. I had fallen off. And then another time I felt one story, but I had slates on my shoulder well, late, and I fell and they slashed my hands and my wrists. And I was in a pretty bad way after that one didn't wasn't quite sure what I wanted to go back to work. But I did. And I recovered. Or I've got all six fingers
