UNC-Chapel Hill’s 51st Rhodes Scholar: Sarah Mackenzie ’20 on the connections between poverty and participation in the criminal justice system

Sarah Mackenzie ’20 of Calgary, Alberta, has received the Rhodes Scholarship to pursue a fully funded postgraduate degree at the University of Oxford beginning this fall. The recent graduate is one of 11 Canadians selected to join the 2021 cohort, and she is the 51st Rhodes Scholar from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, according to the University’s announcement of the award on November 23.

Sarah is the 32nd Morehead-Cain to receive the scholarship and one of just two Carolina students to receive it this year. The second awardee, Peter Andringa, graduated in 2020 with degrees in journalism and computer science.

Established in 1902, the Rhodes is one of the oldest and most prestigious international scholarship programs. Scholars are selected based on academic excellence, character, leadership, and commitment to service.

𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐢𝐧 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐲 𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 (𝐄𝐩 #𝟑𝟖) - 01/03/2021

Policy is a set of proposals developed and then implemented by governments to address an issue or a problem in the society. The spheres that policy has an impact on ranges from health and social policies (within the category of public policy) to foreign and even military policies.  To develop relevant and useful public policies, policy research and analysis is a key component, and some would argue the foundations of any policy development.
As an academic field, public policy relies on disciplines such as economics, political science, sociology, behavioral science, health, management and others, resulting in an interdisciplinary field reflecting interconnected public issues. We will be discussing these issues today not just as an abstraction but also as it relates to public policy making in Armenia.

𝐀𝐬𝐛𝐞𝐝 𝐊𝐨𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐤𝐢𝐚𝐧 is an associate professor of political science and international relations at the American University of Armenia, where he teaches courses on post-Soviet space and the Middle East.

Unpacking AOC's Green New Deal, with Brian Greenhill and Jennifer Dodge

On the first of a two-part series, two political scientists from the Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy offer insight on Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's Green New Deal and discuss the degree to which the resolution could transcend political ideology and bridge coalitions.

Returning to the show is Brian Greenhill, an associate professor who researches international relations, human rights and international organization. He spoke on the UAlbany News Podcast last season on the approaches policymakers take when addressing the risks of climate change.

Joining Greenhill is Jennifer Dodge, an associate professor of public administration and policy at UAlbany. Her research focuses on environmental policy conflicts, with special attention to the role of policy advocacy efforts by nonprofit organizations.
