'In God We Trust' - From Fact To National Motto

'In God We Trust' - From Fact To National Motto

Our national motto, 'In God We Trust,' can be found on U.S. currency, stamps, and public buildings. From colonial times to the present day, the motto has reflected this nation's trust in God for guidance and protection in good times and bad. Although some believe our national motto does not belong in the public arena because it references God, it has been endorsed by several presidents and both houses of Congress and upheld by the U.S. Federal Appeals Court.

Claudette Didul of Mad Men | Episode 9

And together, we break into the world of entertainment! Although the setting of a television show or movie may appear seamless to the audience, we have learned in this conversation - that is actually an extreme, coordinated effort - that even requires a bit of luck! So many moving pieces have to work in concert in order to present the atmosphere we all admire; especially in a mid-century period piece like Mad Men, or Catch Me if you Can. Settle in for a crash course in set decoration using modernist design with Claudette Didul.

Episode 16: Raffle-winner Destin: It Moves Us. We Call it "Art"

Episode 16: Raffle-winner Destin: It Moves Us. We Call it "Art"

Destin was the winner of our raffle at our fundraising event at Postmasters Gallery in October, 2019. It was a contest to raffle off a philosopher, and I, Dena Shottenkirk, ended up being the philosopher who was raffled and Destin won the slot of being the talkPOPc participant. He gives a definition of art as something that makes people feel something. He also argues that prestige items are such because they make us feel something. They move us. Something is expensive because it makes us feel something. Cars, jewelry, etc. I give this back to him and ask him if this is what he is saying: things are valued because they move us, and art is just a subcategory of that. It is the being dazzled that makes something valuable. He concurs.

Pollock: A Staged Reading featuring Jim Fletcher and Birgit Huppuch

Pollock: A Staged Reading featuring Jim Fletcher and Birgit Huppuch

We were pleased to present a theatrical reading of Pollock on June 16, 2018, featuring the original actors, Jim Fletcher and Birgit Huppuch, in Provincetown’s Hawthorne Barn as part of Twenty Summers' annual month-long arts festival. French playwright Fabrice Melquiot's drama, translated into English by Kenneth Casler and Miriam Heard, and directed by Paul Desvaux, illuminates the profound connection between the brilliant madness of Jackson Pollock and his marriage to artist Lee Krasner, exploring the charged space between his genius and her spirit, his inhibitions and her frustrations. It was our honor to shine a spotlight on these two important artists, both of whom spent time in the Hawthorne Barn.

This performance was made possible through the support of The Cultural Services of the French Embassy, which promotes the best of French arts, literature, cinema, digital innovation, language, and higher education across the U.S.
