    What is The Pond?

In this episode, we talk about a project we have been working on for a long time at Yunt Capital, The Pond. We are super excited to announce the release of The Pond, a media platform built by a community of crypto natives to share and document the collective experience of working and interacting within Web3.

    http://thepond.wtf

The Pond allows us to fold in new writers and content creators to expand our areas of expertise and the amount of incredible content we can offer. Ultimately, we hope this grassroots initiative becomes a space for us to share ideas. We aim for The Pond to be a full-stack Web3 content hub where we’re looking to publish the best writers and content producers in the space to drop knowledge about crypto, NFTs, and Web3 gaming. It’s going to be a place where anyone from the noobiest noobs to the in-the-trenches degens can come to read up on what’s happening and what’s coming in crypto.

If you enjoyed the episode, please subscribe, rate, and share so we can continue to get amazing, alpha-dropping guests. We plan to release episodes bi-weekly, so don't sleep!

Dragonflies and the Science Behind Their Unique Adaptations

Dragonflies and the Science Behind Their Unique Adaptations

Dragonflies are some of the fastest flying insects in the world. With 360-degree vision, they can eat hundreds of insects per day, including those pesky mosquitoes and other biting insects. Their adaptations for flying are unique among insects and so precise that humans can only dream of being able to someday make machines that fly as well as dragonflies.

Dragonflies are similar in structure to an ancient group of insects informally called Griffinflies, which contains some of the largest flying insects to ever live. These dragonfly-like insects had a wing span of 2.5 feet, or 30 inches. That’s bigger than a house cat. How did these bugs get so big, and why are they no longer around? That’s a question we’re still trying to answer.

Dragonflies have some unique adaptations to ensure they mate with the correct species, including remarkable variations in the male sex organ, and even a secondary sex organ.  Males can be aggressive while mating, which has led to some females living in a totally different habitat than males. In some cases, females mimic males or pretend to be dead to avoid males.

Ep. 124: Under The Grunge Part 3

Ep. 124: Under The Grunge Part 3

This week we strap on our old Doc Martins trudge through the muck and grime of the springtime in the US Pacific Northwest. Yep, time for our annual spring GRUNGE episode! We discuss the bands just outside the usual suspects of Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, and Pearl Jam. Your hosts remember this time fondly, as we were young adults when the Seattle scene invaded all rock n’ roll avenues in the US. In retrospect, this sounds like less of a movement and more of a melting pot of many of the genres that had been established in silos during the 70s and 80s. What do you think?

This episode features songs from bands outside the big 4 of grunge, but we don’t think you’ll be totally surprised. A perfect amalgam of punk, classic rock, and metal is right in Kevin’s wheelhouse, and we find out the impact this had on Robert’s musical path. We discuss the origins of the movement and have a lot of fun reminiscing about this unique time in rock history. Come jump on the hike with us to grab a Starbucks and some flannel.

    Songs this week include:

    1. Kerbdog – “Cleaver” from Kerbdog (1994)
    2. Hammerbox – “Hole” from Numb (1993)
    3. Pond – “Tree” from Pond (1993)
    4. Brad – “Raise Love” from Shame (1993)
    5. The Gits – “Another Shot Of Whiskey” from Frenching The Bully (1992)
    6. Mudhoney – “Living Wreck” from Piece Of Cake (1992)
    7. 7 Year Bitch – “M.I.A.” from Viva Zapata! (1994)

    Pond

    Pond

"Pond" are a psychedelic rock band from Perth, Western Australia.

Although the band official formed in 2008, their roots can be traced back to 2005, when singer Nick Albrook got together with a few friends under the name of "Electric Blue Acid Dogs". Feeling that the name was not appropriate when entering a local battle-of-the-bands competition, they renamed themselves to "Mink Mussel Creek". It was at this time they crossed paths with Tame Impala frontman Kevin Parker, who would later join them as their drummer and go on to produce a number of Pond's early studio albums. Since those early days the band have gone on to tour the world and drop 9 studio albums. Join Jay and Jesse as we dive into the history of "Pond" and spin a few favorite tracks, including some early rare jam/demo recordings which also feature Kevin Parker on drums.

European Eels: The Fish Whose Life Cycle Scientists Still Don't Understand

European Eels: The Fish Whose Life Cycle Scientists Still Don't Understand

The European eel (Anguilla anguilla) is  a snake-like, migratory fish. Eels spend most of their adult lives as freshwater fish, but are born and die in the ocean. How they’re born and how they die scientists are still trying to figure out. And we better figure it out quickly because European eel are a critically endangered species. So no jellied eels for you.

    But first:
Jennifer tells the story of her boomer encounter in the doctor's office. And by boomer, we mean, OK boomers, the group of boomers who don’t care how their behaviors affect other people.

In the Good, the Bad, the News

The bad, Cuomo is a dick and he abandoned his dog. And Amber reads some comedic crime blotters.

The good, 4oceans Solar-Powered Beach Robot filters plastic 30x faster than humans. Then, Patagonia (the outdoor clothing company) dumps a ski resort which held a far-right fundraiser. Fuck Marjorie Greene.

So little is known about European eels that up to 1777, we didn’t realize eels were fish and thought that they spontaneously generated in the "guts of wet soil".  Sigmund Freud couldn’t find the eel’s male sex organs and gave up on biology entirely in frustration. European eels may use magnetic fields to navigate thousands of miles through the Atlantic Ocean, but who knows why they travel thousands of miles to spawn. Lots of people like to eat European eels, so poaching and smuggling is a big threat to the species. We also have not figured out how to raise them in captivity.

Listen now to learn about the European eel, an animal we like to eat, but know very little about.

American Bullfrog: The Not-Toad that Will Eat Almost Anything

American Bullfrog: The Not-Toad that Will Eat Almost Anything

Did you know that Jeremiah was a Bullfrog? And, yes, he was a good friend of mine. But, no, he was not a toad, so shut up Amber.  All toads are frogs, but not all frogs are toads. This frog, the American bullfrog, is the largest frog in North America. The male American bullfrog is one of the world's loudest animals.

The Good The Bad The News - Jen’s cat Marceline (the Vampire Queen) ate a mouse, which was her job, so Jen doesn’t get why Amber is so worked up over it. Then we talk about the good and the bad of this year's Olympics.

Bullfrogs are opportunistic, ambush predators that prey on anything they can overpower and stuff down their throats. This ability to eat almost anything has allowed the American bullfrog to become an invasive species not only in western America but throughout the world.

Listen now to learn more about the American Bullfrog and why Jennifer was wrong (XP).
