Pool Leak Detection: Managing The Entire Process - Start to Finish with Ryan West of Leak Science

Greg and Justin sit down with Ryan West, President of Leak Science, a veteran-owned company which specializes in swimming pool leak detection and pool restoration.

Ryan got his start in the pool business after leaving the U.S. Navy. Beginning with a small route of pools, he quickly grew his company to over 300 client accounts. After a successful run in pool service management, Ryan sold his business and switched his focus exclusively to repair work.

Following leak detection training, Ryan opened Leak Science—the only full-service company of its kind in the Valley. He lists the unique challenges of the job, the equipment he uses, what he listens for as a leak locator, and the stringent training process he uses when hiring repairmen.

Ryan discusses the different types of leaks and what makes detecting them so hard. He also explains what builders should consider when constructing a pool to minimize the risk of leaks, as well as what to do to ensure longevity following a leak fix.

Finally, he talks about his process for working with new clients, communicating with irritable clients, avoiding lawsuits, and dealing with the tricky situation of being called on by owner-builders.

Pool Brain: Service Business Solves Software Issue by Creating One Specifically for Pool Companies with Adam Beech

Pool Brain: Service Business Solves Software Issue by Creating One Specifically for Pool Companies with Adam Beech

We sit down with Adam Beech, President of Pool Brain, an all-in-one online platform designed to streamline your medium-to-large pool company.

Adam got his start in the pool industry in 2007 when he and a friend bought a 60+ pool route, and promptly proceeded to lose all of those pools not long after! Undeterred, they eventually grew their business to roughly 35 trucks by 2013.

At that point, they hit a wall preventing them from scaling further, forcing them to think outside the box regarding how they might be able to stop spinning their wheels and win back the freedom to work on their business rather than in their business.

Eventually, they realized that if there was a way to standardize their process, in an industry where there are thousands of variables at play, the business would take off.

To that end, Adam created Pool Brain, a “unicorn platform” that organizes and makes infinitely more efficient every aspect of a pool business, from creating and managing quotes, to billing and payment processing, to scheduling and dispatch, to technician report cards, to route optimization.

Listen in as Adam breaks down Pool Brain’s most unique features and how the platform can revolutionize your pool business!

    Topics Discussed:

    • [03:47] Adam’s early pool career
    • [06:04] Creating Pool Brain
    • [11:58] What the software can do that pool technicians can’t
    • [19:53] How Pool Brain’s makes your workflow smoother
    • [23:40] Automatic chemical dosing and built-in customer feedback
    • [27:47] Automatic swim wait notices
    • [31:59] Sending quotes for ongoing service
    • [35:08] Billing and other customer requests

    Key Quotes by Adam:

    • Instead of training the person, which is not practical, we have to train the program. Then, when the person uses the program, it’s just going to tell them what to do and when based on one person knowing a lot about the industry who dialed it into the program.

Introduction to Rule Your Pool Podcast by Orenda Technologies

    About Orenda Technologies

Water is a precious resource, and we strive to make it clean and beautiful. Orenda has a philosophy of minimalism, and proactive pool care. Why be proactive? Because prevention is always easier than correction, and we want to help educate the pool industry and pool owners about it. The vast majority of pool issues are preventable, and that's why we published our Four Pillars of Proactive Pool Care.

For many years, Orenda was primarily a speciality chemical manufacturer, building a business on quality, professional-grade products and reputation. We have since evolved into an education company. We have invested heavily in building the pool industry's leading mobile app and dosing calculator, have a library of helpful videos, and a growing list of educational articles in our blog. In 2019 we released Orenda Academy, which is another free resource for anyone to learn more about pool management.

We want to deliver the best water quality possible, with the fewest chemicals. The Orenda line of professional grade, eco-friendly speciality pool chemicals help our customers get there. But our chemicals merely complement our program, which is a series of improved habits and behaviors to optimize water management.

Let’s stop guessing and “eyeballing it”, and instead dial in our behavior and habits. Orenda is here to help.
