Planning for the Postpartum Period with Dr. Allyce Jones, DNP, PMHNP

Dr. Allyce Jones is a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner who specializes in reproductive psychiatry. She started her own private practice called Felicity Women’s Center which I have joined as of August. I have worked with her for the past couple of months and have learned so much from her.

Today we discuss postpartum planning: making plans while pregnant for a more successful postpartum period. We touch on topics such as sleep, nutrition, feeding support, support with house and family, self-care, and therapeutic support.

Sustainable Wellness Within Hustle Culture with Erin Shepard, LCSW

Welcome back! This is the first episode of season 2 of The Sad Moms Club podcast.

Today I talk to Erin Shepard, owner and clinician and Yarrow Therapy & Counseling Services. She and I talk about something she calls sustainable wellness which is "the idea that a balanced life doesn't necessarily mean a balanced day." She also talks about how to get out of anxiety and depression spirals, do not harm days, and self-soothing.

Something about Erin is very comforting and validating. I needed this episode when we recorded it in the spring, and I needed to hear it again as I edited the episode in the fall. You'll love learning from Erin!

386 | Postpartum Uncovered Mini Series - Dr Sarah McKay
The first study on pregnant women’s brains was published in 2017. While the research may be new, it’s also profound; pregnancy prompts the greatest structural brain change in response to any life experience which can help you better understand yourself in the fourth trimester and early postpartum. In this episode, I chat to neuroscientist Dr Sarah McKay, who explains how the new mother’s brain goes into a state of plasticity which makes it very easy to learn. She also discusses changes to the non-birthing parents brain, oestrogen as a cognitive enhancer and the importance of prescribing sleep. It’s time to let go of the derogatory colloquial term baby brain so we can be empowered by the brain changes after birth. Learn more .

EP40 | Lindsay Clancy of Duxbury, Mass & The Realities of Postpartum Psychosis

EP40 | Lindsay Clancy of Duxbury, Mass & The Realities of Postpartum Psychosis

In episode 40 (the second part I promised from the unreleased episode), I share the very emotional, complex, and disturbing case of the Clancy family of Duxbury, Massachusetts. This one definitely got to me. I do talk about self harm, mental illness, domestic violent and suicide and list resources below. In January, 32-year-old nurse and mother,  Lindsay Clancy, is believed to have killed her three young children - Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months -  while being treated for a postpartum condition. It is a complicated case with many differing opinions. I share the facts of Lindsay Clancy’s case to date and details of two other high profile US cases of mothers who murdered their children, facts of their cases, what the science says, and where they are now. Postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis are not the same and should not be considered as such.

#156 | Surviving Psychosis: Christa's Story of Postpartum Hallucinations, Intrusive Thoughts & Suicidal Ideations

Postpartum psychosis occurs in 1 to 2 per thousand births and involves extreme conditions such as hallucinations, intrusive thoughts, paranoia, suspiciousness, hyperactivity and inability to sleep. Today, Christa Ardelean joins us to share her powerful story of suffering with postpartum psychosis. Her story begins with a difficult pregnancy and birth, which, unbeknownst to Christa, included numerous risk factors associated with perinatal mood disorders. When Christa's son was born, she didn't want to hold him.  Shortly after, she woke up one morning and said to herself, "My baby would be so much better off if he were dead or if I were."  Terrified, she found 24/7 support for the next six weeks while she suffered with hallucinations, intrusive thoughts, and an inability to bond with her baby. With continuous support, medication, and journaling, in time, she completely overcame these feelings. By nine months, she felt like her own person again and now reflects on how her deep love for her son saved her life.

We're back for season 2 of The MOTHERLODE Podcast and in our first episode of the season we dive into an incredibly important topic - postnatal mood disorders and maternal mental health with Dr.  Walker Ladd, Ph.D. (*Please note that in this episode we touch on subjects that are sensitive in nature such as depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts and may be upsetting or triggering for some listeners. )
