Ep. 554 – Monthly Roundup – Season’s End, Duck Science, Snakes in the Pit, and Upcoming Projects

A hard freeze followed by rapid warm up and widespread rain made for an interesting and somewhat productive end to the 2023-24 hunting season. Chris Jennings, Katie Burke, and Dr. Mike Brasher look back on the closing weeks of the season and discuss other recent happenings around the waterfowl world. Mike reports on a jam-packed but rejuvenating week with science colleagues at the North American Duck Symposium, status of duckDNA, and future podcast episodes. Chris shares stories from his final weeks, including SHOT show and an unwelcome encounter with snakes in a pit blind in late January, while Katie reports on successful hunts in Mississippi and upcoming podcast recordings and new happenings with the Waterfowling Heritage Center.

E17S4  When Windfalls and Riches Await

E17S4  When Windfalls and Riches Await

At first, Erika Bolstad knew only one thing about her great-Grandmother, Anna: she was a homesteader on the North Dakota prairies in the early 1900s before her husband committed her to an asylum under mysterious circumstances. As Erika’s mother was dying, she revealed more. Their family still owned the mineral rights to Anna’s land—and oil companies were interested in the black gold beneath the prairies. Their family, Erika learned, could get rich thanks to the legacy of a woman nearly lost to history. Thus, began Erika’s journey into the past. She joins Russell and Alan to share her discoveries, which she also relates in her memoir, “Windfall: The Prairie Woman Who Lost Her Way and the Great-Granddaughter Who Found Her.”

Ep. 509 – Science of Ducks Unlimited Canada

Ep. 509 – Science of Ducks Unlimited Canada

Dr. Matt Dyson, DU Canada waterfowl research scientist, and Dr. Mike Brasher join forces to discuss the exciting growth and application of science in waterfowl and wetland conservation across Canada. Matt shares insights on the ecology of boreal forests, effects of wildfires on waterfowl, difficulties of studying ducks in this vast landscape, and new science by DUC colleagues. Matt also recalls stories from his upbringing and accepts the challenge of identifying his favorite fish.

    The Farming Storyteller

    The Farming Storyteller

If you are involved in the ag industry in Western Canada, you've more than likely read this man's work in the Grainews, The Western Producer, or maybe even the Financial Post.

Have you ever thought about the writer behind the article?

Toban Dyck grew up on a farm but started out his career ambitions with the written word as his craft.

This lead him to become an award winning writer for many different papers.

His writing eventually took him far from the farm to the big city of Toronto.

On a visit home he realized the true beauty and legacy of the family farm and decided to return.

Toban's talent and passion to write gave him the ability to relate with producers on a very practical level.

His question quickly became ... do we take writing for granted in agriculture?

Through his articles he has connected with not only hundreds of producers sharing their stories, tips and tricks around the farm, but the broader public in order to create awareness.

He is also making an impact on agricultural organizations ability to communicate their message through his new company, Burr Forest Group.

There's one thing that will always remain the same, great storytelling always wins.

EP 142. Landscape-level Waterfowl Conservation, Scott Stephens

EP 142. Landscape-level Waterfowl Conservation, Scott Stephens

Scott Stephens and Ramsey Russell went to Mississippi State University together way back when. Stephens is now Ducks Unlimited Canada's Director of Regional Operations for Prairies and Boreal Forest, where he directs waterfowl conservation efforts over an almost unimaginably huge portion of North America--way, way bigger than the narrow 100-mile corridor bordering Yellowhead Highway that Ramsey Russell thinks of as Manitoba! Why does Stephens facetiously tell people that he "doesn't really do anything anymore"? How bad is this year's drought throughout Canada? What are long-term and short-term effects, and why does Stephens see a golden opportunity? Regards meaningful, landscape-level waterfowl conservation, what major industries are becoming ardent stakeholders in waterfowl habitat conservation efforts? Is this what Stephens imagined himself doing many years ago, what drives him? Plenty silver linings to consider in this informative episode.

Earthworms and the Ozark Highlands with Dr. Kristofor Brye

Earthworms and the Ozark Highlands with Dr. Kristofor Brye

“Earthworm density differences over time among a native tallgrass prairie and chronosequence of tallgrass prairie restorations in the Ozark Highlands” and “Seasonal earthworm density differences among mound positions and soil moisture regimes in native tallgrass prairies in the Ozark Highlands” with Dr. Kristofor Brye

Earthworms are praised as environmental engineers and their health can be tightly linked with both soil health and soil benefits like carbon sequestration, attributes which are of crucial importance when taking on projects like prairie restoration. It is therefore key to understand the soil properties and environments which are most beneficial to earthworm health. In this episode, Kris will walk us through his research, including how he got started in prairie restoration, the role of earthworms in soil health, and just what kinds of conditions these underground allies crave.

    Tune in to learn:

    • What it’s like working in a tallgrass prairie
    • How to distinguish between adult and juvenile earthworms
    • If worms show preferences between mound and inter-mound areas
    • How earthworms react to various soil conditions
