#47: Does the 'Skinny jab' deserve all the hype?

#47: Does the 'Skinny jab' deserve all the hype?

In this episode I discuss the Wegovy skinny jab and whether it truly deserves all of the hype its getting

I've read through the STEP trial (published in JAMA, in 2021), which was the basis for it being approved in the UK by N.I.C.E in September 2023

    I answer 3 questions:

    1. Does it work?
    2. Does it work long term?
    3. Does it have side effects?

#46: Is focusing on your mental health a good idea?

#46: Is focusing on your mental health a good idea?

Its currently Mental Health Awareness Week, and in this short episode I give two reasons why I think focusing on your mental health might not be a good idea

There may be some benefits to it as a focus, but I think these cons may outweigh the pros

As a society we love to measure and gather health metrics, and in some cases this can be beneficial, but is that always the case?  Is measuring and assessing always the wise option?

What Are Some Risks And Opportunities With Wellness In The Workplace?

What Are Some Risks And Opportunities With Wellness In The Workplace?

In this episode, we examine the different aspects of wellness in the workplace and explore the potential challenges and areas of growth that can come with improving employees' physical, mental, and emotional health.

Our prescription for this episode: understand that wellness strategies cannot be successful in a silo. We need to look at physical, mental, AND emotional health all together. Employee wellness is how you maintain employees in the long term.

    Statistics referenced:

Employees take an average of 4 sick days a year, but admit to being unproductive an average of 57.5 days a year.
-GCC Insights. Clocking on and Checking out: Why Your Employees May Not Be Working at Optimal Levels and What You Can Do About It. (2016)

The cost of burnout-related absences and lost productivity can be close to 25% of an employee's annual salary.

#36: Can strength training improve our metabolic health?

#36: Can strength training improve our metabolic health?

In today's episode we discuss the question of whether strength training can improve our metabolic health.  Metabolic health being related to blood pressure, blood sugar, BMI, blood triglycerides and cholesterol.

To discuss this, I'm joined by Luke Callis, a sports scientist and strength & conditioning coach with applied experience working in elite sport, mainly the areas of professional football working at Wolverhampton Wanderers, Barnet FC and Sheffield United. More recently his work has hugely diversified working with athletes ranging from GB Para swimmers, GB Ice Hockey Players and Professional football referees to name a small selection.

Luke's research interests are around injury prevention and long term athletic development.

We discuss a wide variety of ideas including:

    What is strength training?
Does it matter which type you do for metabolic health?
The different types of strength training
    The concept of 'Overload'
    Why goalsetting matters
    The power of routine
Cardio vs strength training for metabolic health
    Why 'beasting' doesn't work
Why focusing on your weight isn't smart

    And much, much more...

    Ep#52 Quiet Quitting

Quiet Quitting - turning up for one's job and doing the bare minimum - what do you think ? I've been hearing many opinions that strike me as unsympathetic, so here I choose to redress the balance.

If you're burnt out and quiet quitting, that seems like a rational response, but it's unlikely to help you feel better. I believe resolving burnout itself gives you much broader and more powerful options.

So, listen for tips on resolving Quiet Quitting as an individual or as a leader.

#16: Return to work - Should managers be using time-off as a mental health support tool?

In this episode I'm discussing the ease with which time-off is used as a tool when employees are struggling with their emotional wellbeing

I discuss why I think it is used so readily, and how it can actually backfire in many cases leading to many employees not returning to their job at all

#17: Return to work - Does habit-change hinder the return to work?

In this episode I'm discussing how malleable our habits are and how across the duration of an absence certain work-related daily habits may fade and be replaced, thereby presenting an obstacle when it comes to returning to work

I discuss one solution to this that might help leaders overcome the obstacle of returning team members having to re-learn old habits at the same time as managing their emotional wellbeing when returning to work
