The Week That Was and That Will Be - February 19

The Week That Was and That Will Be - February 19

In our latest podcast episode, we take a deep dive into the heart of Burbank, uncovering the pride, challenges, and unique perspectives that shape this vibrant community. Our conversation begins with a light-hearted exchange about Burbank swag, including the sought-after myBurbank hats, and the announcement of our word of the week contest winner, Samantha W., who won a gift card to the local Hill Street Cafe. This sets the tone for an episode that seamlessly blends humor with serious community discussions.

We proceed to cover the Burbank Police Department Foundation's awards luncheon, an event that honored the bravery and service of our police officers. The efficiency of this luncheon sparked an interesting debate on how city council meetings could benefit from a similar approach, potentially increasing productivity and public engagement. This example serves as a reminder of the importance of recognizing local heroes and the role such events play in fostering community spirit.

One of the more contentious topics we tackle is the issue of rent increases in Burbank. The debate is multi-faceted, touching on the financial strains faced by tenants, especially those on fixed incomes, and the economic pressures on landlords who need to maintain their properties amidst rising costs. We reflect on the diverse opinions shared during a council meeting and explore the tension between protecting housing rights and the realities of rental property economics. The impact of state laws on rent control and the responsibilities of landlords during crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, are also highlighted in our discussion.

Switching gears, we reminisce about Valentine's Day, sharing personal stories that range from heartwarming memories to amusing anecdotes involving pets. The conversation takes a serious turn as we report on the police force's successful efforts in cracking down on a series of armed robberies at local 7-Elevens. This segment illustrates the dual nature of life in Burbank – the joys of family and festivities against the backdrop of vigilant law enforcement working to keep the community safe.

The episode also explores Burbank's inclusive approach to sports, celebrating the success of initiatives like the wheelchair basketball league at McCambridge Park. Our banter about pronunciation quirks and the confusion over Presidents Day provide a humorous interlude before we delve into the complexities of law enforcement equipment oversight. We demystify the term "military equipment" and discuss the advantages of surplus donations to local municipalities, emphasizing the importance of transparency and public meetings in the process.

As we near the end of our episode, we touch on the significance of community events and the efforts to revive the beloved Burbank on Parade. We discuss the necessity of community support and financial backing to make local events a success and extend an invitation to listeners to recommend their favorite food truck vendors to improve event experiences.

Finally, we address common frustrations, such as the overwhelming presence of attorney advertisements on bus stops and the lack of awareness about local events despite extensive publicity efforts. We advocate for direct communication over social media speculation and highlight the value of constructive dialogue in navigating community issues.

Our episode wraps up with an appreciation message for our local advertisers, reminding listeners of the interconnectedness of the Burbank community and the shared commitment to supporting local businesses. As we sign off, we leave our audience with anticipation for our next episode, promising to delve even further into the captivating stories and discussions that define our city.

American Leadership and the Quiet Revolution

American Leadership and the Quiet Revolution

America knows leaders. Americans know a fake leader when we see one.
This past week we saw a real leader and two key fake leaders make headlines.
On the one hand, we have President Trump who, spending thousands of dollars of his own money, flew in his jet and had supplies delievered to East Palestine, Ohio.
On the other hand we had two completely inept fake leaders: Administrator Biden who abandoned America on President's Day and Pete (I play the husband) Buttegieg who took almost 20 days to visit the accident site in Ohio.

The "Quiet Revolution" is what we need. Learn about it in today's show.

    #52- President's Day

    #52- President's Day

All presidents are not created equally. By making this day more generic and watered down, we reduce it's value and our history. Washington! Lincoln! strike a response. They deserve our attention and respect. Does Gerald Ford and many others deserve equal billing? President's Day washes over accomplishments and individual significance. Take a listen.

Episode 122 - May The Best Pillow Win

Episode 122 - May The Best Pillow Win

It’s been a slow sports week, but your Sports Lordz are still ready to bring you a new episode! We begin this week by discussing how pillows are the future of politics, we dive deep into My Pillow vs. The God pillow, and have some general talk about sleep. We then wish everyone a happy belated Valentine’s Day and President’s Day, and debate who’d be the best president to hang out with. Then we hit a little sports as we discuss some MLB hot stove news as the Rockies traded away their best player for nothing, tanking in baseball, and how Trevor Bauer is a “cool” and not lame guy. We then shift gears and discuss Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Super Bowl celebration, TB 12 seeming a little human, and the trophy toss. Later we get a review of the hilarious Netflix show, The Big Show Show, talk a little NBA and how our beloved Hawks stink, Marc Cuban vs. the National Anthem (not the song by Radiohead btw), and wrap up the show with more talk of pillows. Please tell folks about the show and rate and review wherever you listen and please remember to stay safe and keep wearing your masks and social distancing. This pandemic isn’t over Serfs. Stay alive!

Today’s episode is brought to you by The Good Pillow! Make a political statement while you sleep.

Are Leaders Born or Made? (Rebroadcast)

Are Leaders Born or Made? (Rebroadcast)

President Trump’s second impeachment trial is beginning. In his first days in office, President Biden is navigating a pandemic and an economic crisis. With presidential leadership once again at the forefront and President’s Day just around the corner, we’re revisiting an episode featuring presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin. In her book, Leadership in Turbulent Times, Kearns Goodwin examines the leadership qualities of past presidents. Were presidents Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Lyndon B. Johnson born with leadership attributes, or did they learn them throughout life? Goodwin writes that they were “guided by a sense of moral purpose.” She speaks with Kitty Boone, vice president of public programs at the Aspen Institute, about how the presidents’ leadership traits can be adopted and used by aspiring leaders.

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, the Aspen Institute is nonpartisan and does not endorse, support, or oppose political candidates or parties. Further, the views and opinions of our guests and speakers do not necessarily reflect those of the Aspen Institute.

Michael Medved: A Lesson from Lincoln on President’s Day

Michael Medved: A Lesson from Lincoln on President’s Day

On the eve of Civil War, Abraham Lincoln concluded his First Inaugural Address with two sentences of incandescent eloquence: “Though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.”

These words remind us that Lincoln—whose legacy we honor on President’s Day—became one of the greatest English prose writers in history, despite his background as an impoverished frontier boy with only a year of schooling. His rise constitutes one of the many American miracles that should inspire anyone willing to look with open eyes at our uniquely blessed past.

Throughout the Civil War and till the day of his death, Lincoln followed the approach later recommended by Bismarck: Listen for God’s footsteps marching through history, then grab his coattails and hang on.

May we see God’s design for America as we celebrate President’s Day.

36:47: Q5 (Everything Else): On the original 1914 Federal Reserve Notes, Lincoln was on the $5 bill, Jackson was on the $10 bill, and what president of the late 1800s was on the $20 bill, although he was later moved up to the $1000 bill?

49:38: Q6 (Sports & Games): In 1912, future president Dwight Eisenhower famously played on the varsity football team at West Point against the Carlisle Indian School, whose star won Olympic gold medals in the pentathlon and decathlon that same year and went on to play professional football, baseball, and basketball?

Michael Medved: A Lesson from Lincoln on President’s Day

Michael Medved: A Lesson from Lincoln on President’s Day

    Once again: A school shooting.

Once again: Tragedy stares us in the face.

Once again: We have the report of numerous fatalities and an even larger and expanding number of those who are wounded.

This time, It was a high school in Parkland Florida—and the questions come, the questions that are inevitable in the aftermath of this kind of headline, the questions that vex us, the most difficult of which seem to have no easy solution at all. We’re looking at a reality that is playing out over and over again.

In the coming days, we’ll be seeing heartbreak when the world shouts only

    headlines.

Even as there is an immediate clamor to try to analyze, to explain and to prescribe, what we need to understand is that there are right now very real families, very real relatives, friends, peers. There are very real patients who are wounded. There are very real human beings who are grieving in Parkland, Florida.

As hard as it may be to convince the larger world that this is true, the most important issue here is not headlines but human hearts.
