Ep. 138. Building Online News Media in India

Ep. 138. Building Online News Media in India

India's news houses are in crisis. The COVID-19 pandemic, the lockdown, the dwindling circulation of print newspapers, and the loss of advertising revenue have all created a perfect storm for an already ailing news industry in India.

With press freedom rankings continuing to be abysmal and business-as-usual no longer working, what would it take to launch a truly mobile-first, online-only news enterprise that can be financially independent and do good journalism?

Prem Panicker joins host Pavan Srinath on Episode 138 of The Pragati Podcast to share what it takes to do this in 2020. Starting in 1995-96, Prem had helped build Rediff.com into an online news website at a time when only a few hundreds of people in India had working computers connected to the internet.

Prem is a journalist and an editor, who has worked at several print and online news houses, including Rediff, India Abroad, and as the Managing Editor for India at Yahoo! Prem also founded www.peepli.org, for deep reporting on environmental, water, climate change and refugees' issues.

Prem is on twitter at @prempanicker and writes regularly at prempanicker.wordpress.com.

Sustaining local news during the COVID-19 economic downturn

Sustaining local news during the COVID-19 economic downturn
Gina Baleria, assistant professor of communication and media studies at Sonoma State University and host of News In Context, guest hosts this discussion about the future of news media with Martin Reynolds, co-executive director of the Maynard Institute, and Michael Stoll, executive director of the San Francisco Public Press. Reynolds says the traditional business model for news fails to support the local journalism people count on.

The San Franciscan, a new magazine, offers tribute to local creative subcultures

The San Franciscan, a new magazine, offers tribute to local creative subcultures
Some San Francisco bookstores carry a colorful magazine that looks like the New Yorker of the west coast. This is the San Franciscan, a volunteer passion project. Amanda Legge and Erica Messner are two women living in San Francisco and working full time in non-media jobs who started the magazine purely for fun. Messner says part of the inspiration for the magazine came from a desire to reflect the creativity the two saw around them.

Independent Journalism: The Revenue Models & Data Behind Free News - with Dan Stinton

Independent Journalism: The Revenue Models & Data Behind Free News - with Dan Stinton
News isn’t free to report, but can be free to read (in an ideal world). When you read the Guardian you sometimes get asked for a contribution, which is one of the ways the Guardian is able to deliver cutting edge, free and editorially independent journalism. There is also the ad-funded model (the images in the page on your phone or on the side of the screen on your PC) and a philanthropic revenue model (which saw the company hire an indigenous editor and resulted in a Walkley Award). We discuss the combination of these revenue models, as well as podcasting and video, with Dan Stinton, managing director at Guardian Australia. We also dip into the implications of the audience data used in advertising and the onus to protect and not exploit such information.
