367 - The Bloody Briley Brothers

367 - The Bloody Briley Brothers

Have you heard of the Briley Brothers? Three young brothers, and a teenage neighbor, went on a vicious murder, robbery, and rape spree in Richmond, Virginia in 1979. And then two of the brothers later planned a historic death row prison escape.  Today's episode really again asks the question, "Are some people just born evil?" It sure seems ago with at least Linwood Briley. A wild story that I'm surprised isn't more commonly known.

    The Pendleton 2

    The Pendleton 2

In this episode, poet and activist Too Black joins to discuss the incredible story of the Pendleton 2. We dive into the details of the 1985 uprising at the Pendleton Correctional Facility and explore the factors that led to this critical event: racial tensions and a violent prison environment created by guards who were part of a KKK splinter group, the "Sons of Light," pushed John 'Balagoon' Cole and Christopher 'Naeem' Trotter to take a courageous stand against racist prison abuse.

Too Black gives us a play-by-play of the day's events, highlighting the importance of unity among prisoners in making the rebellion, and we learn how Cole and Trotter managed to bring everyone together and prevent the situation from escalating into something much worse. We also discuss their decision to call Black radio stations and newspapers for help, warning them that their lives were in danger if they didn't intervene; examine the 14 demands  they issued which were eventually met; and why this event became known as "Indiana's Attica." Despite their heroic actions to save a Black man's life from racist prison guards, both Cole and Trotter remain incarcerated to this day. As we wrap up our conversation, we share resources for listeners who want to learn more about the Pendleton 2 and get involved in supporting their cause.

Before You Go: Live in LA Its Our Oscars Show!

Before You Go: Live in LA Its Our Oscars Show!

Stanley Nelson appears as a guest on Before You Go during a career milestone:  Oscar nominee. After decades of directing historical documentaries illuminating African American history through compelling interviews and a library of rare footage, Nelson, an award-winning filmmaker, made it to the big stage. Though he, co-director Traci A. Curry and his team with Firelight Media did not take the Oscar this year, he says it was truly "an honor to be nominated" and Before You Go hosts Nicole and Bryant were honored to discuss his Oscar nominated project, Attica.

Laurens Grant (American Experience:  Jesse Owens), an award-winning filmmaker herself, has produced a number of Stanley Nelson's films. Grant joins the conversation and describes behind-the-scenes adventures that occur when getting the story.

It's an exciting hour--especially since the hosts appeared Live on the mic in the KBLA Talk 1580 studios.

Special thanks to KBLA Talk 1580's Miles Low.

    The Exorcism of Maurice Theriault

    The Exorcism of Maurice Theriault

"As we got out of the car, we all froze. In the light, we saw very tiny handprints, like that of a six-year-old, all over our car."

TW! TW! TW! Examples of suicide, sexual abuse, and murder are present in both of Dan's stories. The first is a shorter  tale that Dan promised to share here after a recent episode of the Timesuck Podcast when he talked about the 1980 New Mexico Prison Riot.  The now closed prison has been supposedly haunted ever since that riot, and today we explore those claims. His  big second story is the tale of Maurice Theriault. A name that probably rings familiar to a lot of horror film fans. Infamous demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren of the Conjuring universe were part of an exorcism on Maurice in May of 1985. Lynze has her usual two stories but this week, it's a little bit different. She shares encounters from the same fan who has two unrelated experiences about 10 or so years apart. Both stories are scary and interesting in their own ways!

283 - A Descent Into Madness: The 1980 New Mexico Prison Riot

283 - A Descent Into Madness: The 1980 New Mexico Prison Riot

At 1:40AM on February 2nd, 1980, a group of inmates at the New Mexico State Penitentiary attacked three guards doing their nightly count. What followed was one of the deadliest prison riots in US history.  Drunk and angry inmates seized the prison, and 36 hours of Hell on Earth followed. 12 guards were taken hostage, 33 inmates were killed, and over 200 people were raped.
Inmates were lit on fire, beheaded, and brutally tortured. When it was all over everyone wanted to know- what led to such carnage? What created such extreme feelings of rage and frustration within some of the inmates at the New Mexico State Penitentiary? Find out in another insane episode of Timesuck.

Episode 94: More Than A Number: Attica at 50, the Shawshank Redemption, and the Cemeteries of Mass Incarceration

Episode 94: More Than A Number: Attica at 50, the Shawshank Redemption, and the Cemeteries of Mass Incarceration

As the 50th anniversary of the nation's deathliest prison riot in Attica, NY approaches I consider the troubling history of those who died there, not only the inhumane way the riot was ended, but the continuing indignity after death. Also examining the best know movie prison cemetery and how it is in many ways representative of reality.

The boys are still in quarantine but are making the best of it.  Brian has been finding new ways to set himself on fire.  Producer Sarah threw a Quarantine Birthday Party for Jeremy complete with Quarantinis, deep dish pizza flown in from Chicago, and booze.  Brian breaks down the riot in Lansing Prison while Jeremy has some pretty dumb questions surrounding how one prisoner somehow Facebook Lived from inside the facility.  Finally, the listeners discuss how they plan to spend the first few days after the stay at home order is lifted.

    Let's Go To Prison

    Let's Go To Prison

This week, the Julia talks about the very haunted West Virginia State Penitentiary at Moundsville, WV, which was haunted before there was ever a prison and DEFINITELY hasn't gotten better, and Sam covers the the Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield, OH. It was used to film the Shawshank Redemption, but the horrors experienced by Andy and Red can't hold a candle to what actually happened inside.

    16 Lee Correctional Riot

    16 Lee Correctional Riot

Josh talks with guests Steve Bailey of the Post & Courier and Victoria McKenzie of the Crime Report about the Lee Correctional Facility Riot.

The Lee riot was the deadliest prison riot in 25 years, resulting in 7 dead and many more injured.

Steve Bailey has written many articles about the problems with the prison system in South Carolina including this article which preceded the riot but predicted something terrible was building.

Victoria, writing on assignment for CBS News, wrote one of the better articles I have seen about the Lee Correctional Riot.

The articles that angered me included this article from Newsweek and this article from Greenville Online.

I was also angered by this article quoting South Carolina's governor Henry McMaster (I believe I said his name incorrectly a few times).

There were some good details that could be gleaned from some of the great journalism, unfortunately, most of the reporting was simply a recitation of the official story about the riot.
