John & Grant Leary: Generations of Golf, From Junior Champion to Teaching Legacy

John & Grant Leary: Generations of Golf, From Junior Champion to Teaching Legacy

The best in state teacher multiple times by Golf Digest and founder of the JRL Academy with his son, Grant who is a rising player in the game.

The story behind as a ten-year old going on a trip to Florida resulted in John being introduced to the game of golf and 6 months later he wins his first golf tournament. He has worked with Eddie Merrins and his short game coach was Dennis Sheehy who worked with the great Seve Ballesteros. Chi Chi Rodriguez took John under his wing but what is one thing he took from him that he has passed onto Grant?

He played his first tour event with BTL former guest Brett Quigley and has played the famous Riveria Country Club in college, on tour, and with his son. Tommy asks John to rate them in order of importance to him. John is impressed that Tommy asked him about a couple stories on being mistaken as a valet person and an amateur as a pro! Good stuff here!

John’s career was cut short by a back injury that he tells us about, starting a bait business to pay bills and who was influential in beginning his teaching career. We talk about how the mental side of the game is not practiced enough which brings in G Unit aka Grant Leary.

Grant tells how the love of the game began and became a science experiment on his first ever tournament which is a really good story! The contract he signed as a fourth grader set the tone for the importance of academics, talking golf at home with dad, and his first two-day win being interviewed by his father. What 2023 taught him, his outlook for 2024 and the explanation of two breakfast days in golf.

John uses his experience of being humbled in the game to prepare his son for them. The development of the California Jr. Golf Tour and final questions for them both.

Talk about East lake Fedex cup championship finals:

    • Rory Finished 21 under to win his third fedex cup the first to do that
    • Sheffler and IM tied second at 2o under. IM almost tied Rory on 18 had the opportunity there to eagle it but his second shot made that difficult for him when it landed in the deep rough off the green.

    LIV/PGA NEWS:

So obviously a lot of big news this year with the PGA and LIV Golf

Commissioner Jay Monnahand spoke to the media at East lake in case you missed it.  Go over some key notes about big changes coming to the PGA.

And listen this is good! Change is good and change needs to happen.

I am not sure if its purse sizes or the way the game is played or home many events they have but the PGA has pretty much been the same my entire life and probably longer.

So one positive to the LIV Tour is that its forcing the PGA to listen to its players and its Fans and make the changes that will improve the game, HOPEFULLY.

Before I go on to talk about what Jay said in his press release, here is the outline for the future schedule changes and compensation the PGA is implementing.  And keep in mind a lot of this is echoing what LIV is attempting to do.  So clearly the LIV tour was on to something.

So when asked if a player who has gone off to LIV looked at

this and says, this lo  oks pretty good, would you lift the

    suspension and welcome them back?

    JAY MONAHAN: No.

    Q. Why not?

JAY MONAHAN: They've joined the LIV Golf Series and

they've made that commitment. For most of them, they've

    made multiyear commitments.

As I've been clear throughout, every player has a choice,

and I respect their choice, but they've made it. We've

made ours. We're going to continue to focus on the things

that we control and get stronger and stronger.

    I think they understand that.

    Q. A year ago you sat up here and were asked about

these competing leagues and you didn't sound too

worried. I'm wondering if you have any regrets that

you didn't take the threat more seriously? And if you

could go back in time, what would you do to try and

    thwart their momentum?

JAY MONAHAN: I take everything seriously. I think

anybody that knows me knows that that's the case.

To me, if you listen to me talk then and you listen to me

talk every day since then, you focus on the things that you

control. When you've got an organization that has a history

that runs 54 years, and number one, again, competitively is

the best system to identify the best players in the world and

    put them in a position to achieve at the highest level;

number two, because of that, provides a platform that

allows them to build their own respective businesses and

brands, and to be able to do the things independently that

they're able to do, that coupled with history, tradition,

impact -- life is all about purpose.

I think that's on clear display today. The fact that we day in

and day out come into a community like this, revitalize it,

are a partner to it, leave it better than we found it, there's

so much depth to what we do, and continuing to focus on

that, as the leader of this organization, as the leader of the

players that we have, that's where all of my focus has and

    will always be.

There's competition everywhere. That's the nature of what

our players do out here. We're competing against other

leagues. We're competing for younger eyeballs. We're

competing to grow internationally. We're competing to

grow our sport relative to other sports. That's the nature of

    what we do.

I think since the point that we were together last year and I

made those comments and I talked about it, we've gotten

better. And as I said earlier, I promise you when we're

here a year from now, we'll continue to get better and

stronger with the best players in the world behind us and

    the greatest members.

Where golf's civil war goes from here

Where golf's civil war goes from here

The golf world has been awash with news about the threat LIV Golf poses to the traditional framework of the professional game. In far shorter supply is clarity about where this all might be headed. In this episode, Dan Rapaport explores the origins of the PGA Tour-LIV rivalry as well as the turbulent present to help understand how the situation could resolve, and why it might not anytime soon.

Disability Insurance | Aaron Goldberg | PGA Players' Series #10

Disability Insurance | Aaron Goldberg | PGA Players' Series #10

The single most important driver of your Net Worth is your physical ability to play golf. If you are hurt or sick and cannot play for an extended period, this has significant impact on your earnings. Not only does it impact your on-course earnings, but it can affect your endorsement deals as well. So why is disability insurance one of the most overlooked parts of players’ financial structures?

The Tour has a disability policy for players with certain exempt status. It is meant to help if you get hurt/sick, but not cover everything. It is important to know what you get as a benefit and when you can receive it if you were to be eligible. Chances are what the Tour supplies, (PGA or Korn Ferry) is not going to be enough to cover what you need. In this podcast we will discuss the unique disability needs of professional golfers and what you can do about it.

WMO Week: Cover your Blindside | Aaron Goldberg | PGA Players' Series #9

Waste Management Open week is unlike any other on tour. It brings with it all sorts of craziness: sometimes good sometimes bad. This is a good reminder that sometimes things go wrong off the golf course and can potentially have a major impact on your finances if not protected correctly.

As an athlete you are a public figure and for all the good that brings, it can also be a target on your back. From minor car accidents, someone getting hurt on your property, to dog bites and parties, if someone sees an opportunity to sue, they will. Make sure you understand how to protect yourself from unforeseen liabilities and keep your personal assets and business assets separate so that you maintain proper protection.

Greg Norman vs. the PGA Tour, Part II

Greg Norman vs. the PGA Tour, Part II

Season 3 of Local Knowledge launches with a look at Greg Norman’s longtime vision of a competing golf circuit to the PGA Tour. Norman first championed the concept as a top-ranked player who wanted to start a “World Tour” in the 1990s, and it continues today as the frontman for an ambitious Saudi-funded effort. Dan Rapaport examines the common threads between Norman’s idea back then and what it looks like today, and why he has been so determined to make it happen.
