Why do programmers have back pain?

Why do programmers have back pain?
There are two groups of people in whom the risk of developing back pain appears especially high — extreme athletes and extreme sitters.

Among the latter, programmers are particularly overrepresented in the people we treat in the clinic and train in the gym. Long hours, additional stressors, food for pay…all seem to contribute.

In an interesting study of programmers in Brazil, multiple measures of ergonomics such as desk and screen height, sitting time and position, mice, keyboard, and chair type were measured to look for a correlation to back pain. The only strong predictor was the amount of time of continuous sitting.
