Guest: Eric Fullerton updating Red Sea shipping attacks; Same-day delivery drives higher revenues; How consumers feel about retail experiences

Our guest on this week's episode is Eric Fullerton, senior director of product marketing at project44. Transportation networks continue to be disrupted by the ongoing militia attacks on shipping in the Red Sea. To counter it, most ocean carriers are rerouting goods away from the Suez Canal and extending their ocean miles by sailing around the horn of Africa. We discuss the latest and what shippers can and should be doing to counteract the effects of these ongoing supply chain constraints.

New research into demand for same-day delivery shows that it’s not just hype – consumers still want fast service, and it can actually add up to higher revenue for companies that provide it. That’s according to a report published this week by crowdsourced delivery platform Roadie.

Retailers gathered in Dallas this past week for the Retail Industry Leaders Association annual meeting. We report on two large retailers, Nordstrom and Walmart, and what they are doing to enhance their customers' delivery experiences.

Guest: Carson Krieg of project44 on holiday shipping; New workers are most at risk for injuries; The need to know partners and suppliers better

Our guest on this week's episode is Carson Krieg, director of global alliances at project44. With Christmas only 10 days away, we are just about to finish the busiest time of the year for the shipping industry. So, how are things going? Have we seen the snags of previous years, or is there too much capacity? Have shippers over-prepared for the season? Our guest has some insights.

New employees are most vulnerable to workplace accidents. New research from Travelers shows that a  third of workplace injuries occur during an employee’s first year on the job, driven by strains from overexertion. We look at what types of injuries are most common and what can be done to reduce the risks of injuries among new employees.

How well do you know your suppliers and partners? New legislation as well as security concerns make it imperative that companies get to know their suppliers and other business partners better. For example, starting in the new year, many companies doing business in Canada will have to report on their efforts to make sure they’re not using forced labor or child labor. Companies should also make sure that their partners don't provide an entrance way into their own computer systems for hackers to exploit.

Guest: Bart De Muynck of project44 on the drying Panama Canal; Does the freight recession foretell a wider economic recession? Finding workers gets harder

Our guest on this week's episode is Bart De Muynck, chief industry officer at project44. The world continues to see the effects of climate change, and now it is affecting our transportation networks. Ongoing drought conditions in Central America have caused lower water levels in the Panama Canal, restricting the number of vessels and the amount of containers they can carry as they make the canal journey. How long will the restrictions possibly last and what will be the effects on ocean shipping as we approach peak season?  Our guest shares his insights.

The slow period in trucking is expected to continue, according to industry experts gathered at the SMC3 Connections supply chain conference this week in Orlando. They expect the sluggish freight conditions will hang around for a while and that a broader economic recession is likely to follow.

One of the biggest challenges for any company in logistics right now is labor. With low unemployment rates, skills shortages, boomer retirements, and having to compete with gig work jobs, it can be hard for many transportation and warehousing companies to stay fully staffed. This week we learned about another complication in that area, which is the rising rate of positive drug tests as more states legalize the private use of marijuana. That  trend makes it even harder to find good workers.

Guest: Bill Brooks of Capgemini on bottlenecks for Covid-19 vaccine distribution; Logistics continues an economic expansion; Supply chain vendors make huge investments to meet consumer demands

In this episode, guest Bill Brooks, vice president of North America Transportation Portfolio at Capgemini, discusses the current state of the Covid-19 vaccine programs. Logistics plays a major role in getting people vaccinated. Where are the bottlenecks, and can anything be done to assure that vaccines are distributed more quickly to both urban and rural areas?

The logistics industry continued its expansion in February, as the pandemic-induced growth of e-commerce stresses existing supply chains. Capacity is limited and prices are continuing to increase due to rising demand. What is the outlook for logistics for the foreseeable future?

Investments are growing at supply chain vendor companies. Two in particular made major investments this week to better serve demand for new systems and material handling equipment.

High fidelity data in supply chain, and project44 - a chat with Christian Piller

High fidelity data in supply chain, and project44 - a chat with Christian Piller

On this episode of the Digital Supply Chain podcast, I spoke with Christian Piller. Christian  is Vice President of Value Engineering at project44 (appropriately known as @freightpipes on Twitter). project44 is a US based company operating globally who bill themselves as "the world's leading Advanced Visibility Platform for shippers and third-party logistics firms".

Christian explained the business in detail (using the example of a Spanish Widget manufacturer (!), and how project 44 would help the manufacturer see where it's shipments of supplies were, as well as potentially its shipments of goods to its customers, and their customers, and so on.

We had a fascinating conversation, and I really liked Christian's point towards the end about the visibility of data - listen for yourselves, and let me know what you think.

Now we are in June, I am trialling a new feature on the podcast - listeners stories. If you have a cool supply chain story you'd like featured on the show, send it to me via email (tom.raftery @ sap.com), or just send it to me as a direct message on Twitter/LinkedIn. Audio messages will get played (unless you specifically ask me not to).
