24: Choosing a Viable Target Audience for Your Coaching Business

24: Choosing a Viable Target Audience for Your Coaching Business

We're taking a pause from the Smart Mindsets & Habits Series. This episode is another On Air Coaching Session (there are 3 previous) where you get to listen in as I work with a coach to decide on a viable target audience for her coaching business.

I'm sorry, I no longer offer On Air Coaching Sessions but you can grab a Strategy Session if you want help choosing your target audience and coaching niche.

Today, I have the pleasure of working with Deborah York. Deborah introduced herself this way ...

I am a divorced mother of two young men that are coming into their own. My younger son will be graduating soon and going off to med school. And my other son is working full time and taking classes and still trying to figure out what he wants to do.

That kind of makes me think about my coaching and trying to wrangle it in to determine which direction I really want to go into. I tell people all the time that I'm a Jill of all trade and master of some because I have two master's degrees.

I love working with people in helping them to uncover their purpose or their path in life. And that's, I guess what's caused me to struggle a little bit because I want to help everyone. And I understand as a coach, you can't help everyone.

One of my Masters is in industrial organizational psychology that has a specialization leadership coaching. So when I initially started coaching, and it's been almost 10 years ago now, I started off coaching people that were in management or are looking to get into management. And through that, it made me look even deeper. So I ended up getting another certification in health and nutrition. My approach is more of a holistic approach, uh, but still trying to find that right group of people that saw the value that I brought to the table who were willing to pay for it has been the struggle.

    Don't Do This Alone

Deborah isn't alone in that struggle. Most coaches, including me, start out not knowing who is a viable and ideal target audience for their coaching business. Many simply do not choose and that often means their business doesn't get off the ground.

And, it's not the easiest thing to figure out on your own.

I wanted to acknowledge Deborah and all women who are the primary or sole provider for their kids, plus getting advanced degrees while holding a full time job and then starting their own coaching business. Super women! You all have my deepest respect.

All Coaching Is Holistic In Nature

Deborah mentioned that she coaches her clients holistically. I pump my fist for that!

When I'm working with coaches to help them build their coaching businesses, there are some days I'll do somatic coaching to get them in touch with the wisdom of their bodies. Some days we'll talk about what's going on at home. Sometimes we're going to talk about mindset or spirituality.

But even though every coach can coach about any topic and we should work holistically with our clients, that does not mean that you shouldn't specialize. In fact, to some degree the more you specialize on a narrow and viable audience, the easier it will be to attract clients who pay you well.

    Elusive and Much Sought After

Confidence is kind of a squishy and sometimes elusive thing. Especially when you're a new coach, just starting to build your business. Or if new to any type of undertaking.

Building your coaching business from the ground up is a marathon not a sprint. It really take time and brain power and creativity. It can feel like a roller coaster and the Imposter Syndrome is in your face a lot. You're alternately elated then stuck then overwhelmed.

    I totally get it.

I'll tell you, I've only been podcasting for 5 months. The learning curve is super steep. I'm still a bit green, learning how to improve audio quality, plan well, get it all done, content upgrades, getting more people to my show... on and on.

So my confidence level is like the tides, ebbing and flowing. And sometimes it ebbs so far out so that I cannot hardly feel it at all! And then I get a high tide where I'm feeling pretty good, you know I think I'm doing pretty well.

I'm really lucky to be a part of a support group that keeps me going. And by the way I just launched Prosperous Coach Club, which is a support group for new coaches. Find it by going to https://prosperouscoach.com/fb. We'd love to have you join into the excellent conversations there about how to get clients, accomplish weekly goals, technology recommendations — all sorts of topics. It's a place that you can be vulnerable and gain confidence!

    So confidence comes and goes.

Do you know what comes before confidence? The pre-cursor if you will?

22: Why Should A Coach Do Market Research?

22: Why Should A Coach Do Market Research?

This episode is part of the series called Smart Mindsets & Habits.

Mindset is a huge driver of success. When you have powerful mindsets motivating you AND you're taking strategic actions — that combo will get you anywhere you want to go in life.

This episode is about market research — an often skipped over strategic action that helps you attract clients who want what you offer.

I'm also going to cover 2 mindsets related to market research that will literally make the difference in whether you'll have a thriving coaching business or not.

So let's start with 2 mindset shifts that I encourage you to make, if you haven't already. These mindsets help you to embrace the idea of market research and other strategic actions.

Act Like the CEO of Your Coaching Business

When I finished coach training, I launched a coaching practice rather than a business. I hung my shingle as a coach and I was open for clients.

That mindset kept me from what I really wanted for nearly 3 years — to be serving clients masterfully while earning well.

I spent all day every day chasing my next coaching client. My website was all about coaching. My marketing efforts sold coaching. I didn't target a specific audience, I had no niche, no strategy, no focus.

I had lots of practice clients. People who were more or less doing me a favor because they could see how enthusiastic I was about coaching and so they hired me for a month or two at low prices. We did some good work but it wasn't deep lasting work. They weren't wholly committed to the process because they didn't really buy into the idea of coaching — which is what I was selling.

Then, realizing that what I was doing wasn't working, I shifted to acting like the owner of a business. I started doing what all business owners do.

That shift in the way I thought about my time, my energy and my actions changed the way others perceived me too.

When you step fully into the role of CEO in your own business you're no longer just floating and hoping.

Instead, your day-to-day is all about building traction, leveraging your efforts, becoming a recognizable brand and offering something that's truly wanted.

You are attracting clients and profits, not just for today, but for your future too.

What can you do right now to take ownership of your coaching business? Here are 3 suggestions that fit the start up phase. Maybe you've done some or all of these.

    1. Create a home office. You need a door, a desk, wifi, a computer.

When you make a physical place for your business, it signals to yourself and the world that you are in this for the long run and not just playing about.

7: Why is Coaching a Hard Sell?

7: Why is Coaching a Hard Sell?

This episode might blow your mind. But I hope it OPENS your mind.

You've probably suspected the truth of this already. It's been nagging at you but you haven't known what to do about it.

    Coaching is a hard sell.

You don't want to have to sell at all, but you definitely don't want to do a hard sell on people!

And, I hear you thinking ...

    "What the fork, Rhonda!

    I'm a coach and you're telling me

it's not a good idea to sell coaching?

What else am I supposed to do?"

Bear with me, because there is an important mindset shift wanting to happen here.

Yes, it is a super valuable skill. It absolutely does help people transform. And we — you and I — are completely sold on the idea of it.

    But most people are not.

To help you understand the disconnect between what we know and what our prospects don't know, I'll share what I call my origin story.

See if you recognize you're own origin story in any of this.

I remember when the idea of coaching sparked in my mind and started burning like wildfire.

I was a Marketing Director of a small corporation. From the outside, it seemed like a perfect job. Great salary, good benefits, weekends off. My boss was the President and an engaging leader. I had authority and a lot of freedom.

Still, each day I came home from work feeling soul-less.

I felt sick on Sundays and dreaded the coming week. When I got home from conferences, I'd cry in the airport parking lot. I was so spent.

I decided I had to break free and deep down I knew that just getting another job wasn't going to do it for me.

I summoned the courage to go my boss and I told her I'd be gone in 6 months and that, in the meantime, I'd like to shift from employee to consultant, train my replacement and work from home 4 days a week.

To my surprise, she agreed to everything I asked. I think she valued me but knew somehow that I was a short termer.

I had more bandwidth then to consider what my next steps were.

During coffee with friends I asked what they thought my strengths were and we brainstormed entrepreneurial possibilities.

One friend said: "You'd be a good coach, Rhonda."

A tingle zipped up my spine and in days I was immersed into a year long training program.

My life flipped over in the most exciting way.

I became coaching's best advocate. I became obsessed.

So you can imagine how confused I was when I talked to people about it their eyes would glaze over and they'd slip away from the conversation.

In a not very subtle way I was trying to convert them. To convince them that coaching was wonderful and that they wanted it.

In reality the only people who really wanted to hear about it were people who were thinking of becoming one themselves.

I'd argue that it is an even harder sell now because there is exponentially more marketing for services out there than there ever was.

And people don't pay attention unless messaging hits every hot spot for them.

I wrote about topics like limiting beliefs and how to find confidence. There are sooo many articles out there on those topics so it wasn't surprising those topics didn't get read. I gave talks on similar topics at Cham

6: 4 Mistakes I Made in Coaching Business Startup

6: 4 Mistakes I Made in Coaching Business Startup

This episode covers 4 big mistakes I made during the start up of my coaching business. Maybe you can relate.

Yes, I made all of these mistakes and more and I lived to tell the tale.

But I've experienced multiple magical turning points in my business as well. Wonderful things I never could have imagined came my way because I did not let my mistakes stop me.

    And that's the key, right?

My guess is that, as I talk about these pitfalls, you'll recognize yourself in some but also realize that you're much more savvy than I was at startup. Coaches seem to get smarter every year.

Mistakes are still the best way to learn. It's a time honored tradition. And growing a coaching business, like any business, is a total experiment. It's a long term gamble.

When I was able to see my business in that light it became easier to power through mistakes by making small adjustments instead of over reacting.

If you can teach yourself to think like a scientist or an innovator and play the long game, you'll be golden. That gumption and grit will pay you back many fold.

Okay ... enough preamble ... now to dish the dirt.

Mistake #1 — Holding High Expectations

There are schools of thought about expectations.

Me? I'm with Shakespeare who purportedly said: "Expectation is the root of all heartache."

That's wisdom similar to the Buddhist belief that craving is what causes suffering. Sounds right to me.

    See, I expected:

    • to replace my income before I quit my job.
    • to immediately get dozens of referrals from friends and family.
    • for everyone to get the value of coaching with a single free session.

The weight of those expectations and others crushed me. Because when things didn't work exactly as I'd hoped, disappointment set in. I was certain that it meant I wasn't good enough.

It didn't mean that. It never means that. It only meant that the experiment was still alive. And, I needed to chill out emotionally while still taking action on behalf of my business.

Then, I realized pretty quickly that exchanging high expectations for low expectations was just another type of self sabotage. It's totally de-motivating.

So it's best to check expectations entirely. The winning attitude turns out to be another buddhist principle. Live in the present moment. Let love drive you in your business and show up as a professional. More about that in a minute ...

I know now that for my first 2 years of coaching, I had been holding my breath until I arrived at an imagined destination.

Where did my high expectations come from? Well some was arrogance. Some was ignorance. And the rest was because ...

    Mistake #2 — I Drank the KoolAid

At the time, when I launched my coaching business there was a lot of hyperbolic messaging about coaches earning high 6 or 7 figures coming from rock star coaches.

As if that was the norm.

I'm glad to see that rhetoric has toned down. And several people who are earning high revenues these days are more transparent about the significant investment of time, sweat and seed money it takes to get there.

I was just listening to Natalie Eckdahl of Biz Chix, one of my favorite podcasts. She genero
