Episode 18: Why can’t we just keep our kids in a bubble???

Episode 18: Why can’t we just keep our kids in a bubble???

I am SO thankful for friends.  Especially the ones who let you rope them into coming on a podcast to talk about a vulnerable topic like sexual assault, how to deal with all the ways our kids are hit from all angles, and just how different it is now than when we were growing up.

We know these topics can’t be ignored.  We can’t avoid it.  But how on earth are we supposed to handle it??

Spoiler Alert: We don’t have the answers.  But we do know two things that are extremely important… having trusted, loving friends to help you through it AND having a plan so you aren’t blindsided.  At least that’s our starting point.

Join in on this uncomfortable (yet funny at times) discussion today.  I hope you feel like you’re a part of it and can relate to the conversation.

    Thanks for joining us!

Episode 17: Super Hero Kids & How They’re Saving Preschoolers-Young Adults

Episode 17: Super Hero Kids & How They’re Saving Preschoolers-Young Adults

“It’s too late to be uncomfortable talking about sex & sexual abuse.” This quote is from a contributor on the promotional video for Super Hero Kids 2020.

DISCLAIMER:  We are talking about a real and raw story right off the bat.  It’s something you may or may not want young ears to hear before you have time time to hear it first.

***If you have not watched it already, I strongly recommend you pause now, and go watch it first.  I promise it will help you understand this conversation more. Here’s the link… https://vimeo.com/449970815 (password if needed: SHK)

I cannot begin to tell you just how incredibly uncomfortable I was talking about this topic.  Thank goodness my good friend, Chris Denton, pushed me.

She pushed me to get past the “ick” I felt when talking about it.  She encouraged me to understand it more, and I am so thankful she did.

That ick feeling has now turned into an urge to help spread the word and for more parents, caretakers, and schools to know about Super Hero Kids and their mission to: fund evidence-based programs to teach students, grades pre-K - 12 action-based skills to prevent the trauma of sexual assault. Students learn how to "Get away and tell!" and age-appropriate life-long personal safety skills.

Pornography: Good Pictures & Bad Pictures: A simple plan to protect young minds with Kristen A. Jenson, MA

With easy access to the internet from any mobile device, it’s not a question of if our kids will be exposed to pornography; it’s a matter of when. That’s why one of the most valuable gifts we can give our children is an internal filter–one they can take with them wherever they go. Tech, Parenthood, and TikTok
It’s difficult to protect our kids from everything online, but there’s a simple thing you can do that can have an impact: check their phones. This will 1.) reinforce the fact that nothing posted online is anonymous and 2.) give them an excuse to opt out of questionable sites and behaviors because they know their parents will be periodically checking up on them. This goes for apps like TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, and even gaming platforms. Just having eyes on what your kids are up to on their phones can have a big impact on their online habits. Snippet from the Show “What happens online is not anonymous.”
