#34 Mental Health Today With Steve Wilson

#34 Mental Health Today With Steve Wilson

We had the privilege of hosting Steven W. Wilson as a guest on our podcast, where he shared his powerful memoir, "Teetering on a Tightrope: My Bipolar Journey." In this deeply personal book, Steven takes readers on a chronological journey through his lifelong battle with bipolar disorder.

The memoir begins with Steven as a nine-year-old boy, completely unaware of the life-altering challenges that lie ahead. From a horrifying day at the theater to suicidal thoughts, an attempt to harm his father, and subsequent hospitalization, Steven provides a raw and honest account of his struggles with bipolar disorder. He delves into his sometimes uncontrollable mind, sexual dysfunction, overwhelming anger, and the immense impact these experiences had on his life.

Despite the hardships, Steven also highlights the moments of normalcy and joy he experienced with his family and friends. Through his story, he aims to demonstrate that individuals with bipolar disorder can still lead full and productive lives.

"Teetering on a Tightrope" emphasizes the importance of balance in the lives of those living with bipolar disorder. Steven draws an analogy to a person walking on a tightrope, striving for balance above a deep gorge. Balance becomes the ultimate goal for individuals navigating the challenges of bipolar disorder.

The memoir explores various milestones in Steven's life, including his traumatic experience of rape at the age of nine. He candidly shares his desire for suicide and his attempt to harm his father, as well as his journey through therapy and the ups and downs of using prescribed psychological medications. Steven highlights the crucial role that one-on-one therapy and finding the right combination of psychiatric medications played in his recovery.

As someone who has battled bipolar disorder for most of his 73 years, Steven has become a leading advocate for mental health. For the past seven years, he has facilitated two mental health support groups in Phoenix, Arizona, drawing from his own experiences and those of others to provide valuable insights into real-life bipolar disorder.

"Teetering on a Tightrope" is not only a personal memoir but also a call to action. Steven urges readers to break the stigma surrounding mental illness and seek the support they need to rebuild their lives. His book, released on January 24, 2023, serves as a powerful tool for raising awareness and understanding of bipolar disorder.

We were honored to have Steven W. Wilson as a guest on our podcast, and we invite you to reach out to him at swwilson.wilson@gmail.com if you are interested in having him as a guest on your podcast or engaging with him in any other capacity. Please join us in welcoming Jon Katz, founder of Foodways Coaching and a beacon of hope for those struggling with mental health challenges.

Jon's story is one of resilience and redemption. Raised in the intense environment of the Upper West Side of Manhattan, he experienced both the richness of cultural exposure and the weight of intergenerational pain. His early adulthood was marked by a tumultuous period in New Orleans, where he found himself immersed in a cycle of self-destructive behavior and a lack of commitment.

In his mid-20s, Jon embarked on a transformative journey, traveling the world and engaging in sustainable local agriculture projects. This experience fostered his love for local food, food systems, and alternative ways of living. However, he soon realized that running away from his inner struggles was an impossible endeavor.

It was a devastating breakup in late 2020, coupled with a history of poor choices and habits, that pushed Jon to the edge of despair. At the age of 34, he found himself battling obesity, anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts. But within this darkness, Jon discovered the power to change his life.

With unwavering determination, Jon turned his pain into purpose. He established a citywide food rescue program that feeds thousands of families each week, utilizing edible but unsalable food donations that would have otherwise gone to waste. This initiative became a manifestation of his own healing journey, an opportunity to address the broken food system while nourishing his own soul.

Jon's path to personal growth took an unexpected turn when he experienced a life-altering apartment fire in 2022. Stripped of material possessions, he gained a profound understanding that true value lies within our internal assets. Even in the face of adversity, Jon continued his mission, undeterred by the challenges he encountered.

Driven by the transformative power of coaching, Jon discovered that there is no greater fulfillment than helping others overcome their pain and reclaim their lives. Having emerged from his own struggles, he now dedicates himself to guiding individuals out of the depths of suicidality, anxiety, depression, repression, and denial. Jon's life's mission is to empower others to step back from negativity, embrace positive mental health, and find the strength to rebuild their lives.

Join us as we delve into Jon's incredible journey, exploring the lessons he has learned, the wisdom he imparts, and the hope he brings to those who need it most. Welcome, Jon Katz, to "Mental Health Today."

#31 Mental Health Today With Tami Blakely

#31 Mental Health Today With Tami Blakely

Introducing our guest today, a remarkable individual who has dedicated her life to helping others remember their innate healing abilities. With a deep belief in the power of love, intuition, and the natural gifts we are all born with, she has found her calling in integrating spirituality and the remarkable wisdom of horses.

From a young age, she knew she was different and possessed abilities that were not considered "normal." Growing up with a single mother battling a debilitating disease, she found solace in her curiosity and spirituality. Her journey led her to horses, whom she believes are the closest beings to God. Despite not being able to have horses in her life during her childhood, her own children's interest in horseback riding reignited her connection to these magnificent animals.

However, it was during a traumatic period in her family's life that she truly discovered the healing power of horses. Struggling as a mother to watch her child in pain without being able to help, she turned to her horses for solace. In their silent presence, she found strength and the ability to face each new day. This experience sparked her curiosity, leading her to pursue certification in Equine Facilitated Learning (EFL) and Equine Life Coaching.

Now, she has made it her life's purpose to offer the honest healing of horses to anyone drawn to them. Through her intuitive equine experience program at Blakely Ranch, she creates a space for individuals to reconnect with their intuitive nature and unlock their natural gifts. The horse serves as the perfect teacher, guiding us to heal our brains and hearts from trauma, regulate our nervous systems, and restore balance to our energetic fields.

As an accomplished western rider, she not only shares her knowledge in the saddle but also continues her own education to support her students' growth. With a deep understanding of the transformative power of horses and an unwavering commitment to helping others, she invites us all to experience the profound connection between horses, spirituality, and personal healing.

Today, we have the privilege of delving into her inspiring journey and learning from her wealth of wisdom and experience. Join us as we explore how the horses become our guides, offering a path to true healing and self-discovery.

#26 Mental Health Today With Christopher Fischer & Sofia Peeva

Dr. Sofia Peeva is a board-certified anesthesiologist with expertise in airway management, anesthetic administration, and medication infusion and titration. While using ketamine extensively for anesthesia, she became interested in its use in mental health settings for treatment-resistant depression, PTSD, anxiety, and chronic pain. Dr. Peeva is a pioneer in adapting ketamine therapy for these conditions, and has seen positive results from her patients who receive ketamine therapy infusions and integrative psychotherapy. She is motivated to continue learning and researching this field to further improve this important and novel treatment.

Dr. Christopher Fischer is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the UC Davis Department of Psychiatry, and a triple board-certified Child, Adult, and Forensic Psychiatrist with over 10 years of experience treating treatment-resistant mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, and PTSD. He became interested in ketamine-assisted psychotherapy due to the limitations of traditional oral anti-depressant medications, and after reviewing the research, he believes that ketamine therapy represents a significant breakthrough for treatment-resistant mental health conditions. Dr. Fischer conducts a comprehensive psychiatric consultation before recommending ketamine therapy and believes that successful treatment outcomes start with an accurate diagnosis and a collaborative treatment plan. He is committed to helping patients recover from mental health conditions and chronic pain.
