Preparing to Preach with Noah Downing

Noah Downing joins us on NTP to talk about sermon prep. Noah has a great, 4-week process that he uses to slowly prepare sermons in order to eliminate the stress of preparation. Noah mentions the following resources that you should check out:
MRI at Heartland Baptist Bible College
    Deep Work by Cal Newport
Text Driven Preaching by Daniel Akin

Preaching When You're Not the Pastor Pt 2

Preaching When You're Not the Pastor Pt 2

Nathan and Thomas continue the conversation about preaching when you are not the pastor.

    1. When you want to preach more
      1. Be patient. Trust takes time to build. And you might be a great preacher, but you probably need some rough edges worked off.
      2. Be prepared and take it seriously. If it is teen church every time the youth pastor preaches, he will likely get limited opportunities.
      3. Take every opportunity (Youth group, Sunday school, nursing home, jail ministry) and use each to communicate God’s word clearly. No “it is just” attitudes.
    2. Preaching irregularly is not conducive to my style
      1. Spend the time to be ready anyway.
      2. Embrace the struggle and craft a series that build but do not require consecutive weeks.
    3. Seek feedback
      1. From your pastor. You might not like it or agree but it is good for you to hear where you can do better.
      2. If your pastor is not interested in giving feedback, find some honest friends and help each other.
      3. Listen to your own messages.
      4. Be humble!
    4. Be careful reusing messages
      1. Don’t broadcast that you are repreaching something.
      2. Do the work to make it fresh.
    5. Be yourself when you preach.
    6. Be grateful for every opportunity. God called your pastor to that pulpit, he doesn’t have to share.

Preaching When You're Not the Pastor Pt 1

Preaching When You're Not the Pastor Pt 1

Nathan and Thomas talk about some philosophies for preaching when you are not the pastor.

    1. Be ready when called
      1. Your job as the assistant, youth pastor, or whatever is to help your pastor fulfill his job, including when you preach.
        • Is your pastor in a season where health is a struggle? Have something finished, polished, and ready to preach at a moment’s notice.
        • Write down the passages and main thoughts when the Spirit gives insight.
      2. Don’t say no. Most preachers are not lazy, so they are asking you because they need help or they were led to ask you. Either way, it makes sense to say yes.
    2. Stay in your lane
    • Don’t preach to fix the problems. (shear the sheep)
    • Don’t say what your pastor wouldn’t
    • Don’t disparage or make your pastor the bad guy. If you can, lift him up by making him the hero of your stories.
    • Don’t correct doctrine- not your job.
