Breaking a sweat with Megan Harlan, Pure Barre South Tulsa and Row House Tulsa

Breaking a sweat with Megan Harlan, Pure Barre South Tulsa and Row House Tulsa

Welcome to Tulsa Talks presented by Tulsa Regional Chamber. I’m your host Tim Landes and the digital editor here at TulsaPeople Magazine. Before we get into the new episode, I wanted to let you know that on TulsaPeople.com we have original content almost every day of the week. There are the Oklahoma Best Sellers lists on Sundays, Tulsa music listings every Monday afternoon (that’s where you can find out what bands are playing where on what day all in one place), Wednesdays are for this podcast and About Town mini episodes. On Thursdays arts editor Blayklee Freed shares her 10 things to do in Tulsa for the week. Then also the third week we have Fab Finds. Oh, and we cover a lot of events, so there are tons of photo galleries like this week’s MLK Day Parade. You can find all this content on our social media channels and at TulsaPeople.com/AboutTown.

Speaking of stories you can read on our site, in our January issue we have an article about the different ways and places you can workout in town. Megan Harlan, my guest on this episode, operates Pure Barre South Tulsa at 89th and Yale, and Row House at 61st and Yale.

I was ready to learn more about Pure Barre when she and I talked in late December. I had seen a story a while back about the creator of Barre and knew its roots were in ballet, but I had a lot of questions. Among them, what’s the difference between Barre and Pure Barre? Also do men participate in the classes?

Megan breaks it all down. She was the first person to open a Pure Barre in the state nearly a decade ago, so she has a lot of knowledge and experience.

We also discuss the ins and outs of Row House South Tulsa, and by the end of the conversation I was ready to drive over and get on a row machine. I didn’t. I ate a Bill and Ruth’s sandwich instead (support our local restaurants), but I am going to make it down there.

Following my conversation with Megan, musical quadruple threat Casii Stephan is back with another single. More on that later.

    OK, Let’s get this going.

This is Tulsa Talks with Megan Harlan.

Casii Stephan is one of my favorite local artists. There are her lyrics, her vocals, the piano playing, her energy. If you haven't already, after you listen to this song, go look up any of her live performances or music videos on YouTube.

In fact, the video for “These Hard Days” was an Oniros Awards Finalist. Also, Casii was named a 2022 artist to watch by NPR Music.

I interviewed her last March at the time of the release of her single “Here Comes the Light,” and she mentioned she was working on the song you're about to hear:

And with that here is Casii Stephan’s “These Hard Days.”

    Healthy Habits

    Healthy Habits

Ice cream? Um, yes please! We both have a major sweet tooth, can get wrapped up in what we are doing and forget to eat a meal, or skip out on sleep, and we have had to learn to make sure we take care of ourselves to avoid burnout.

It is so important to make sure you are taking care of you. As entrepreneurs, if our health suffers, it affects our business. We are not nutrition or health experts, but this week we open up about our own habits and discuss our personal struggles when it comes to creating habits to take care of your overall physical and mental health.

    Eating Habits

As two ladies with a sweet tooth we have learned we cannot have sweets in our homes. If it is there, it will be hunted out and devoured! But that is only one of the adjustments we have learned to make in our lives to make sure we have our best eating habits.

Shaunae has begun meal prepping on Sundays to make it easier for her to eat the regular three meals a day and two snacks. Alarms on her phone have also helped her to make sure she is eating when she needs to and not getting caught up in her work and skipping out. She has also found healthier alternatives like LaCroix water to replace diet soda.

Sarah has cut out soda all together after feeling like it was making her sick when she was younger. She also has limited the amount of processed foods she consumes.

    Get Moving!

We have mentioned our love of Pure Barre before, and in this episode we share why it works for us. Shaunae loves that it gets her out of her home when it is also where she eats, sleeps and works. It is also a workout that is low impact but high intensity. For Sarah it is all about the accountability structure!

But when it comes to moving, it is really fining what works for you - yoga, dance, running, hitting the gym, and even a new drum exercise or aerial silks! Maybe it is even taking a walk around your neighborhood. Find what excites you to get moving!

    Sleep

We love sleep, but it is something so easy to skip out on when the work is piling up. Every person is a little different, but ideally we should obtain 6-8 hours of sleep per night. To prepare for a restful night we share our nighttime routines, from getting in to bed to leaving the devices alone.

    Love Your Tribe

Who you surround yourself with is important. They can affect not only your mood, but how you live your life. Shaunae mentions a quote that mentions we obtain the attributes of the five people we are closest with. If the people you surround yourself with have the same mindset as you, you are more likely to achieve your goal that much faster.

    Announcement!

We have a new Facebook group! This group is a space for you, the creative business owner, to share ideas, dreams, fears, and hopes, as well as to allow us to interact with you! We want to get to know you and about the legacy you are looking to build.

    Defining Your Ideal Client

    Defining Your Ideal Client

In this episode we talk about the value of defining your ideal client and using that to reach out to the potential clients you'd love to work with.

Why We Have an Ideal Client and How to Define Your Ideal Client

Having an ideal client helps you reach out to the type of person you want to work with because you are able to be specific in your messaging to reach them. Know the types of activities they enjoy, what their goals are in life, what is really important to them - and then create social media posts, blog posts, etc. that speak to those things. If we speak to anyone and everyone we will find ourselves receiving inquiries from people that are not the best fit for us, what we do and who we want to work with. If we take on a project or event with a client that is not ideal, we won't mess with them the best and it can stress us out to the point that what we are doing feels more like work than the passion we have for what we do.

Even though we are REALLY specific in our ideal client, does not mean we have a checklist of music our client must listen to or what their go to choice of drink is and will never work with anyone who does not meet each check. Being so specific is simply to help target your ideal client. Where it matters in working with a client is in their ideas and values. So have fun with it! And like Shaunae mentions, you can even name your ideal client and envision them sipping champagne and strolling the streets of a farmers market!!

Share who your ideal client is with us on social media!
