Knowing and following His Word | Psalm 119:9-16

Knowing and following His Word | Psalm 119:9-16
The importance of storing up the Word of God in a biblically illiterate and increasingly post-Christian society/culture. Allowing the Word of God to be our moral compass on every issue. Never straying away from the reliability, truth, and trustworthiness that the Bible affords. Cherishing the privilege and eternal priceless value of the Word of God, laying our treasure and hope in heaven.

A Call To Arms (1 Peter 4:1-6) [Rod Ohmes] - Audio

A Call To Arms (1 Peter 4:1-6) [Rod Ohmes] - Audio
When Peter says “arm yourselves with the same way of thinking…” [v.1], there’s a connection between understanding suffering and having the mind of Christ (Phil. 2:1-8). Even in the Christian, there’s conflict between the mindset of living for the yourself and living for God. But Peter says that we shouldn’t live the rest of our time in the flesh, according to our sinful human passions, but for the will of God. There isn’t a person who is living or a person who has already died who does not fall under the authority & rule of God - all must give an account. If we are to have the mind of Christ, there is no better way than to read, study, think, memorize, and prioritize God’s Word.

Put It Away & Grow Up (1 Peter 2:1-3) [Rod Ohmes] - Audio

Put It Away & Grow Up (1 Peter 2:1-3) [Rod Ohmes] - Audio
How are Christians to respond to the enduring Word of God? Put away & grown up. Put away things that aren't respresentative of who born-again people are and grow up in salvation. Just as you would take off a coat, Christians are to "take off" their old self that's ruled by things like malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy, & slander. Likewise, Christians are to be like babies who desire/need milk to grow up and be healthy. Believers "grow up" in their salvation by craving the Word of God like a baby craves milk. A person only craves it this way if they have been born of His Spirit.

Walk in Love (Ephesians 5:1-2) [Rod Ohmes] - PDF

Walk in Love (Ephesians 5:1-2) [Rod Ohmes] - PDF
Imitate means – “follow as a model, copy, simulate”. From the Latin it literally means to “copy an image”. How can we ever hope to imitate God? Christians imitate God like the moon imitates the sun. They don’t have any light of their own, they get their light from the Son. When light is seen in them, it’s the reflection of the light coming from God in Christ. As Christians, our desire is to be the clearest reflection of Him as possible. We know who God is by looking at Jesus: “He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature..." [Heb. 1:3]. Christians reflect God’s character more as we put on Christ more. Christians imitate God because He has adopted them as His beloved children! Ephesians 5:1 is the result of Ephesians 1:5. As God’s people, Christians should be known for reflecting the character traits of their Father. We reflect Him in how we speak to others, how we exercise self-control, how we control our tongue, how we show kindness, and how we forgive. When talking about the love of Jesus, Paul points to the cross. Loving like Christ involves giving ourselves away for the good of another. As we walk in love, we sacrifice for others as a spiritual act of worship [Phil. 4:18]. As we understand Christ’s love for us better and better, we will love others better and better. May our lives be marked by “walking in love”.

Clean Clothes - Part 2 (Ephesians 4:28-32) [Rod Ohmes] - Audio
Believers were made for honest work, not stealing. We should labor in honest work to be able to share with those in need. If you don’t have much extra money to give, be generous with your time. If you don’t have much extra time to give, be generous with your money. - God wants His people to replace stealing with honest work & giving. The word “corrupt” here is the Greek word sapros and it means “rotten, corrupt, spoiled, worthless”. It’s the same word Jesus used when talking about rotten/bad fruit in Matthew 7 and when talking about rotten/bad fish in Matthew 13. The words that come out of a Christian’s mouth should be filled with grace and should build the other person up – Christian’s words should edify. Our words have eternal impact. - God wants His people to replace corrupting talk with edifying talk. An angry person is actually a selfish person. The real cure for our own bitterness and anger is forgiveness. The more you understand the weight of your own sin, the more you understand God's forgiveness. The more you understand forgiveness, the more you will forgive others. - God wants His people to replace bitterness and anger with kindness and forgiveness. The key to putting on the new self is following Jesus – imitating Him – and walking in love.

Identity is defined as: “the characteristics that determine who a person is”. Paul has already described a non-believers identity in [v.17-19] in very broad terms. Now in [v.25-32] Paul fleshes out what a life with and without Christ looks like in the ebb and flow everyday life. He is explaining to Christians how to live out their new identity. The Christian life is a life of consistent willful submission.  It’s consistent because being lax in this will cause us to move away from God.  It’s willful because it takes a conscience act of our will to do this.  It’s submissive because we live for the Lord and not ourselves. Our practice and our theology are tied together. Christians should not only live differently from unbelievers, but they also should live differently for different reasons. - God wants His people to replace lying with truth-telling. [Proverbs 6:16 & 19] - God wants His people to replace selfish anger with godly anger. [Psalm 4:4-5] These things are the practical application of how Christians should live out their faith day by day. Because of who we are in Christ, we must now live differently.

Be sure of this - the Gospel doesn’t just promote change in a sinner, by its very nature the Gospel will change a sinner. A changeless gospel that leaves you living for yourself and not for the glory and honor of God, isn’t the Gospel. Something has change. A saved person thirsts for the exaltation of cross. A calloused or hardened life is proven in the giving over to sensual (lustful desires, not limited to sexual desires) and greed - an “I want” and an “I must” lifestyle. Sadly, this kind of lifestyle can be maintained if what we believe is a false gospel. A false gospel wants to leave you just like you are. Christianity entails following Christ. Followers or disciples are people who adhere to the teaching and lifestyle of the teacher. Our teacher is unique because we have His Spirit. This means that He, the risen Christ, dwells in us. In other words His life will be lived out through His followers. Paul has pleaded with us and is now commanding us to follow by putting off and putting on.
