How PXG Is Using Golf to Positively Transform the Lives of Our Military Veterans | Episode 021

Welcome to Season 2 of the She Talks Birdie Podcast!

I am excited to share a special episode I created in partnership with PXG to launch the new season. Have you ever thought of golf as more than just a game? Perhaps it's hard to consider the far-reaching benefits of golf when you feel as though the course just kicked your butt.

Through my conversation with two members of our military and PXG's Heroes Squad, Corporal Chris Nowak and Corporal Chad Pfeifer, I discovered how PXG is helping veterans heal from visible and invisible wounds through golf.

Here are the highlights from this episode:

    • [1:56] Introduction
    • [2:57] Cpl. Chad Pfeifer's story
    • [11:26] Cpl. Chris Nowak's story
    • [15:54] The learning process that has to take place for a veteran taking up golf
    • [24:02] How a veteran's mental toughness can be leveraged in golf to help them successfully navigate life
    • [30:07] How veterans and golfers alike are taught to maintain a positive outlook on the course
    • [33:11] The importance of perspective in golf
    • [35:00] How PXG is supporting veterans through their programs
      • getting veterans introduced to the game
      • making equipment affordable
      • building a community of veterans who look out for each other
    • [41:00] How you can learn more about PXG and their programs (links mentioned are provided below)
    • [44:25] Final thoughts from Chad and Chris

Haley Bookholdt - Former D1 Golfer Turned Business Owner

Haley Bookholdt - Former D1 Golfer Turned Business Owner

Meet Haley Bookholdt. Haley is a former Elon University golfer who was born and raised in New Jersey.

In this episode Haley talks to me about how she first got into the game of golf, stories from her journey, her goals and challenges she has learned to overcome in her past.

Haley is an amazing young woman. She is intelligent, well spoken, witty and funny. She is an accomplished athlete and now a business owner! Haley has been able to grow her brand large enough that she has been signed to the PXG brand!!

Haley works for Back Swing Golf Events as well. Back Swing Golf Events is a 100% women owned and operated business that acts as a 3rd party fundraiser at charity golf tournaments around the United States. Back Swing golf Events allows women the opportunity to earn money playing golf while pursuing their dreams of becoming professional golfers on the LPGA tour. At the same time they provide a unique and fun experience at charity golf tournaments that help charities raise additional funds to help their causes.

Haley's mission for her new media company is to grow the game of golf and inspire young girls and women to take up the game she loves so much. She hopes to be a mentor and role model for women and young girls all over by sharing her knowledge and experiences openly and honestly.

Haley explained to me that she struggled with mental health challenges such as anxiety while playing competitive golf. Her struggle with anxiety kept her away from the game for a long period of time after graduating from college.

With the help of boyfriend Davis and their shared journey towards strengthening their mental game, Haley has rekindled her passion for the game of golf! Now she is considering obtaining her Masters Degree is Sports Psychology to further help other athletes achieve their dreams!!

It was truly a pleasure getting know more about Haley today and I hope y'all enjoy this episode.

The Long and Winding Road - One Woman's Journey into Professional Golf

The Long and Winding Road - One Woman's Journey into Professional Golf

In this Episode we meet a new professional player where we discuss her journey to professional golf.   There are many different paths that players take in becoming professional golfers and working towards their goal of making it to the "big tour" -- whether it be the PGA or in this case, the LPGA.   Often times it can be a lonely journey, sacrificing a robust social life in exchange for hitting golf balls, working on the swing, wedge game or putting.  The stress from the long hours of practice, training and preparation can often take a toll on a player's mental health too.

Hannah Leiner is a native Floridian who recently graduated from Florida International University (FIU) after a career in NCAA Division 1 golf.   She shares her struggles and joys of playing golf from junior golf to college and then making the decision of becoming a professional.   We learn how she combats the low points and  enjoys the high points.

Along the way,  we also chat about social media and how Hannah became a Social Media personality, developing a following of over 100, 000 (100K) on Instagram.   Of course, being a prominent social media personality can take on a life of its own and the perceptions that some have about "Instagram golfers".  Like Paige Spiranac,  Hannah tackles the topic head-on, sharing how she gains strength and support from her "social media family" and how she uses social media to promote the sport of golf and for her sponsors like PXG.

Join us for this short episode or pass it on to the young person in your life who often dreams of becoming a professional player.
