When the Moon Lights up the Ocean: into the Depths of the Plant Path with Suhaly Bautista-Carolina

#015 - Join us for an amazing conversation with Suhaly Bautista-Carolina of Moon Mother Apothecary on the power and experience of diving into the depths of the plant path. Suhaly is an AfroKisqueyan herbalist, artist, educator, and community organizer. And she’s the founder of Moon Mother Apothecary, a practice and offering of heart-centered, moon-powered medicines created in the traditional wisdom and knowledge of her ancestors.

In this episode, Suhaly shares about how working with nourishing roots like Ginger and Astragalus and soothing herbs like Lemon balm and Oatstraw allow us to slow down and reconnect to our wholeness, to each other, to ourselves, and to nourishment.

She also offers key insights into how plants can help us find the courage and the bravery that is required to take a leap into new depths, and how she has found inspiration in Mae Jemison, who was the first Black woman to venture into outer space; and Andrea Motley Crabtree, the first Black woman deep sea diver in the US army.

The Moon Mother will be hosting an upcoming workshop on the Mother of All Lands: Plants of Power, Purpose, Resistance in Kiskeya with Herban Cura on April 24th; where she’ll do a deep dive into the Materia Medica, folklore, mythology, and socio-political histories of some medicinal plants prominent in Dominican plantwork & the ways they are used across various Dominican communities and in the Dominican Diaspora.

Suhaly Bautista-Carolina (she/they), aka Moon Mother aka The Earth Warrior, is an AfroKiskeyan herbalist, artist, arts administrator, educator, mother, daughter, wife, and community organizer. Her practice lives intentionally at the intersection of plant power and people power and centers the collective wisdom of her community and the ancestral legacy of her people, while creating spaces of agency for folks to enter into their own healing. She is a 2018 graduate of the Sacred Vibes Apothecary spiritual herbalism apprenticeship, and carries out her purpose through small batch, moon-powered plant medicine offerings, justice-forward collaborations, workshops, knowledge-shares, and beyond.

Suhaly has hosted plant medicine-making workshops with spaces including New York Botanical Garden, Gossamer, The Wing, The Museum of the City of New York, Ethel’s Club, Fotografiska, The Highline and several others. She has also guided workshops at the 2nd and 3rd Annual NYC Spiritual Herbalism Conferences. Her ongoing research is centered on Kiskeyan plant medicine in the Dominican Republic and across the Dominican Diaspora in NYC.

The Moon Mother is a proud member of United Plant Savers, Queer Healers, and Herbalists Without Borders. And she is living + loving in Brooklyn, on Lenape and Canarsee land, with her wife and their baby girl, Luna.

The Wisdom of Pleasure & Sacred Nourishment with Tavia Benjamin

#010 - Join us for an amazing conversation with Healer and Facilitator Tavia Benjamin on the power of listening to the somatic wisdom in the body and how to connect with a sense of deep nourishment in these times.

In this episode, Tavia offers key insights into how you can tune into what you enjoy in a way that helps you nourish your nervous system while really living the life that you love. They also share about their resonance with Maryam Hasnaa's class on Pleasure as Prayer and inspiration from Rashida KhanBey Miller on connecting with pleasure as fuel rather than as a reward. And why it's so important to honor the body as a temple, especially for people who work in the healing arts.

Tavia Benjamin (they/she/he) is a Healer and Facilitator, and they focus on embodying liberation and creating liberated spaces for people, especially BIPOC communities. Tavia has over a decade of land and food justice organizing experience, and they work in collaboration with Durham Community Apothecary and the Black Mycelium Project.

Tavia's work supports Queer Southern Black folks to birth new social models and structures into existence that both support their freedom and help them reconnect to their divinity and sovereignty to create sustainable, holistic systems change.
