    Ep. 218: The Inbetweeners - When 80s Met 90s pt.2

This week we pay homage to bands straddled the world of the 80s hard n’ heavy and the 90s alternative n’ grunge. These were bands that were somewhat outside of the status quo specifically in the hard rock and metal world that seemed to be playing music that was more genre and categorization-defying. Thus we created our own non-genre called; The Inbetweeners!

What’s this InObscuria thing? We’re a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This week we cover all 3 categories and even some bands that we played early on in the podcast. The transition from the hard rockin’ 80s to the punk-edged alternative of the 90s was a time like no other, and some bands simply got caught in the middle. Go and check out these songs and the albums that they come from and enjoy some music from The Inbetweeners!

    Songs this week include:

    1. Naked Sun – “Psycho-Activate” from Naked Sun (1991)
    2. Funhouse – “Y.R.S.” from Generation Generator (1990)
    3. No Walls – “Naive” from No Wall (1992)
    4. Animal Bag – “Missing Out” from Animal Bag (1992)
    5. Red Sea – “Blood” from Blood (1994)
    6. The Hatters – “Sacrifice” from The Madcap Adventures Of The Avocado Overlord (1994)
    7. Loudhouse – “Faith Farm” from For Crying Out Loud (1991)

Ep. 217: Raiding The Progressive Rock Crypt - 80's Neo-Prog

Ep. 217: Raiding The Progressive Rock Crypt - 80's Neo-Prog

This week get your nerd on with us as we are raiding the Prog Rock crypt again. However, this will be a much different journey into the world of progressiveness, as we are covering Neo-Prog from the early to mid-1980s. A much different time for progressive rock, as these bands were influenced by more than just Genesis, Yes, and King Crimson. These groups were injecting heavy doses of hard rock, new wave, punk, and pop into their progressive Day-Glo soup! Keep an open mind and give it a listen…

What’s this InObscuria thing? We’re a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Prog rock in the 60s and 70s initially had mostly classical music and jazz influences, but over the last 40 years it has come to include other fusions of music styles including metal, punk, funk, folk, and electronic. From Zappa and Sgt. Pepper to the 1980s music by bands like Marillion and Pendragon… This is Neo-Prog Rock! Get yer nerd on!

    Songs this week include:

    1. Saga – “Wind Him Up” from Worlds Apart (1981)
    2. Twelfth Night – “East Of Eden” from Smiling At Grief (1982)
    3. IQ – “The Wake” from The Wake (1985)
    4. Pendragon – “Fly High Fall Far” from The Jewel (1985)
    5. Gowan – “Keep Up The Fight” from Gowan (1982)
    6. It Bites – “All In Red” from The Big Lad In The Windmill (1986)

    Episode #146 - The Wrath

    Episode #146 - The Wrath

This week, we conclude our song-by-song deep dive into Night Demon's latest album, Outsider, by turning our attention to the epic closing track, "The Wrath."  Hear why the band members view it as the most ambitious song they have composed to date.  Listen to early demo recordings, and let Jarvis, Armand and Dusty walk you through the track, part by part. The band explains how they view "The Wrath" as innovative, and get into a few Easter eggs buried deep within for the Night Demon faithful.  The episode is rounded out by a live version of the song and a line-by-line breakdown of the lyrics and how they relate to the story of Outsider.  Finally, there are a few reflections about the album as a whole and how it cements Dusty's legacy in the band as his final recording with Night Demon.  Listen in next week for much more on that topic.

Listener Beware: Kevin is on his own again… Happy New Year! 2022 has been an amazing year for new music from legacy artists, current artists, and new artists; in fact, this is the third celebration of 2022 music. Ep. 140: Degrees Of Separation... RIPPER

Ep. 140: Degrees Of Separation... RIPPER

This week is our 8th installment of, “Degrees Of Separation…” where we discuss the more obscure side projects and solo releases from some not-so-obscure artists. This week we pay homage to the rock n’ roll rags to riches story that is the metal god-like voice that is Tim “Ripper” Owens. He inspired a major motion picture, not to mention gave opportunities to countless other singers from tribute bands to perhaps be considered as the replacement for the real deals. This guy has some of the most sought-after pipes of the last 25 years. All hear our warning; never turn your back on The Ripper!

New to InObscuria? It’s all about excavating obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal from one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. While we may be talking about bands that you know intimately in this episode, perhaps you are not aware of the depth of side projects they have had over their careers. Our hope is that we turn you on to something new!

    Songs this week include:

    1. Ripper - “Embattled” from Embattled - Single (2022)
    2. Winter’s Bane - “Heart Of A Killer” from Heart Of A Killer (1993)

    Ep. 139: Splinters & Stitches - Supergroups & Offshoots

    Ep. 139: Splinters & Stitches - Supergroups & Offshoots

This week we look to the stars for inspiration for our show theme. Oh yeah! We are talking about bands that have rock stars in them: Supergroups and Offshoots. A band consisting of well-known artists from other bands does not always equal great success. We dive into some of the more obscure supergroups and offshoots that didn’t break with huge mainstream success or stay around very long.

What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect his personal collection; an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. This week we talk exclusively about Supergroups featuring famous solo artists and band members along with, Offshoots which are bands that contain the bulk of a previous incarnation of a famous band. Our hope is that we turn you on to something new.

    Songs this week include:

    1. Screaming Lord Sutch - “Wailing Sounds” from Lord Sutch & Heavy Friends (1970)
    2. Living Loud - “Last Chance” from Living Loud (2004)

Ahoy listeners! This week strap in for a 4-hour tour to the bottom of the sea of completely self-indulgent noodling… nah, just kidding! We have raided the Prog Rock crypt, yet we’ve prepared a bite-size slab of the genre that pushes the boundaries of rock music with a diverse mix of, well… everything! Kevin’s prog-rock cruise that was postponed in 2020 is finally setting sail this week, so we thought we’d feature several of the artists that will be featured on the ship.

What’s this InObscuria thing? We’re a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Prog rock in the 60s and 70s initially had mostly classical music and jazz influences, but over the last 40-years, it has come to include other fusions of music styles including metal, punk, funk, folk, and electronic. From Zappa and Sgt. Pepper to today’s Djent and Post-Prog movements… This is Prog Rock! Get yer nerd on!

    Songs this week include:

    1. Riverside – “Rainbow Box” from Rapid Eye Movement (2007)
    2. Transatlantic – “Rainbow Sky” from The Absolute Universe: Forevermore (2021)
    3. Wishbone Ash – “The King Will Come” from Argus (1972)
    4. District 97 – “Stay For The Ending” from Many New Things (2022)
    5. Pain Of Salvation – “Angel Of Broken Things” from In The Passing Light Of Day (2017)
    6. Marillion – “Murder Machines” from An Hour Before It’s Dark (2022)

Ep. 123: Grave Mistake: WARRIOR SOUL Shoulda Been Huge!!! Pt.2! Part

This week we continue our ongoing series called “Grave Mistakes: They Shoulda Been Huge!!!”. This is Part 2 of our exploration and exploitation of the sleazy Detroit Punk meets NY Metal sounds of the amazing WARRIOR SOUL! This band straddled the world of the 80s hard n’ heavy and the 90s alternative n’ grunge during the first decade of their career. This time we unearth the second half of their rock n’ roll road trip with the whiskey-soaked spewing of tunes from 2009 through their recent release in 2022.

This episode is rooted in our Should Have Been category. This is a band that we have featured on the show already in episodes 33, 83 and 119. An American alternative metal band, formed by lead singer, songwriter, producer, and painter: Kory Clarke. Unfortunately, their brilliance and innovation have never been recognized to the degree that it deserves. We think they SHOULD BE HUGE… and we are ready to fly that banner proudly!

    Songs this week include:

    1. Warrior Soul – “Don’t Believe” from Destroy The War Machine (2009)
    2. Warrior Soul – “Planetary Revolution” from Stiff Middle Finger (2012)
    3. Warrior Soul – “Back On The Lash” from Back On The Lash (2017)
    4. Warrior Soul – “War Ride Children” from Rock N’ Roll Disease (2019)
    5. Warrior Soul – “D.O.A.” from Cocaine & Other Good Stuff (2020)
    6. Warrior Soul – “Out On Bail” from Out On Bail (2022)
