Jazz Bastard Podcast 235 - Latin It All Hang Out

Jazz Bastard Podcast 235 - Latin It All Hang Out

We start off season ten with neither a bang nor a whimper, but rather the sound of exotic auxiliary percussion and the screams of excitable brass.  It's a show devoted to "Latin" music in its many guises, both smooth and bumptious, with looks at a early innovator in the jazz field, a couple of main stream jazzers hoping to strike it rich with the bossa nova craze, and a towering figure in big band jazz who always approached "outside" influences in his own distinctive way.  Chico O’Farrill – COMPLETE NORMAN GRANTZ RECORDINGS; Oscar Peterson – SOUL ESPANOLA; Duke Ellington – LATIN AMERICAN SUITE; Quincy Jones – BIG BOSSA NOVA.

Terence Toy: Vanguard of House Music

Terence Toy: Vanguard of House Music

Terence Toy started spinning house tracks in the early 80s, back when the genre was progressing through major east coast cities with velocity. The late New York house DJ David Bryant was a mentor to Terence and turned him on to the deep, funky sound of the underground scene. Bryant’s perceptive advice to Terence was, “to be really successful in this business, these are the grooves to play.” Terence never looked back.

To the benefit of his audience, Terence brings to his turntables his experience as a trained musician. He’s a skilled drummer, he reads music and was a member of his high school band. He understands music theory and is an expert at reconstructing verses, bridges and breaks. Terence is also an accomplished composer and producer of house music, including deep house, R&B house, gospel house, Afro-Cuban rhythms and Afro-tech.

His roots embody the styles of New Jersey swing to the Miami sound to Chicago warehouse; the beats and tempos speak to him. Soulful-vocal-house and straight-ahead jazz have always moved him equally.

Click the links below to listen to the tracks we played on our episode with Terence, plus a few more including Terence's musical response to George Floyd and the story about it.

#161 – Plow, Plant and Water the Seeds to Reap the Harvest in Business and in Life

This week I could not be more honored to host this week’s guest of The Alden Report, Tim Storey. Tim is an acclaimed author, speaker, and life coach, known for inspiring and motivating people of all walks of life, from entertainment executives, celebrities, and athletes to adults and children in the most deprived neighborhoods in the world.

Tim has traveled to seventy-five countries and spoken to millions of people. He often meets privately to counsel high-profile leaders in various industries. Along with a rigorous speaking calendar and private life-coaching sessions, Tim regularly appears on nationally syndicated radio and television shows.

Listen as we discuss Tim’s difficult background which he overcame through the power of positivity to become the success that he is today. There’s a reason why Quincy Jones has called him “The voice of inspiration for our generation.” Other ringing endorsements include:

“Tim Storey is the comeback coach!” – Robert Downey Jr.

“Tim Storey is an energetic man with both wit and wisdom. His information and insight make life’s journey a little easier.” – Lee Iacocca

“Tim Storey is wonderful at walking people through the best and worst of times.” – Smokey Robinson

Tim’s upbeat and positive outlook on life shine through in his latest book The Miracle Mentality. During challenging times, toxic thoughts can drag you into a mindset that’s mundane, messy, and mad. Negative thinking can undermine all aspects of life, from family and romantic relationships to career satisfaction, financial stability, and physical and spiritual health. To overcome these obstacles, one needs a new mindset--a miracle mentality - where dreams are achievable, hope is actionable, and spiritual healing is possible. In this book, Tim provides his readers with a road map to transcend negative thinking, leading to bigger adventures, more opportunities, and deeper meaning.

Thank you so much to Tim Storey for joining us this week on The Alden Report.

So in this episode I'll share those three life lessons that stood out to me and how they impacted my career.

A note (but not a final one) on the last day of Pride month.

We don’t have to look alike -to listen

We don’t have to agree on everything -to listen

We don’t have to worship the same God -to listen

We must agree -on our shared humanity

We must accept -that we are all flawed in someway or another

We must also accept that we are all uniquely gifted in various ways

I hope this will serve as an example of the above.

    Mark Plati

    Mark Plati

EPISODE 35: Mark ‘s career began in earnest in New York City in 1987 when he began working with dance music legend Arthur Baker at Shakedown Sound as an engineer, mixer, programmer, and musician. Between 1987 and 1991 Mark worked with such diverse artists as Quincy Jones, Janet Jackson, The Talking Heads, Fleetwood Mac, Lou Reed, Oingo Boingo, Dream Academy, The Fat Boys, Grayson Hugh, Pete Wylie, Dennis Brown, and the Bee Gees. After working with Prince on the ‘Graffiti Bridge’ album Mark left the world of dance music and remixing to incorporate those sensibilities into mainstream record production - a philosophy he still continues to embrace. During the 1990’s Mark worked with such diverse artists as Nina Hagen, New Order, Natalie Imbruglia, Suzanne Vega, Al Green, Big Audio Dynamite, Shawn Colvin, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Deee-Lite. In 1991 he began a ten-year association with minimalist composer Philip Glass’ New York City recording complex, The Looking Glass, where he produced, engineered, mixed, or performed on albums by The Cure, Hooverphonic, Alisha’s Attic, Duncan Sheik, Dave Navarro, as well as Glass himself. In 1996 Mark co-produced and mixed David Bowie’s ‘Earthling’ album; this marked the beginning of a seven year association with Bowie where Mark either produced, recorded, mixed, or performed on most of Bowie’s musical output. In 1999 Mark switched gears and began a three year stint as Musical Director and guitarist/bassist with Bowie, performing with him in Europe and the U.S. at such shows as the Glastonbury Festival, NetAid, the Montreux Jazz Festival, VH-1 Storytellers, The 9/11 Concert for New York, and the Area 2 Tour with Moby. He supervised the live execution of two complete Bowie albums - ‘Heathen,’ and the 1976 classic ‘Low.’ In 2005 Mark began an extended period of working in Paris, producing and mixing a number of iconic platinum artists including Louise Attaque, Les Rita Mitsuko, Emilie Simon, Alain Bashung, KYO, and Charlie Winston. Mark continues to work in New York as well as on the Continent, and is constantly looking for new musical adventures. mark-plati.com

    One World. One People.

    One World. One People.

Welcome to this weeks Monday episode everyone.

    #GetThosePages
What a week it was. Hayden finally got some more writing done on his new sci-fi script. Though, it may be put on hold as a new project has emerged!

But before all that...WHATCHA BEEN WATCHING:
Hayden loses track of where 'Boy Meets World' went with the advancing seasons and may have to go back because of the high enjoyment of the stories told.
'Empire' spends season 2 really developing the characters, especially Terrence Howard and makes for compelling viewing.
Hayden stumbles across a plethora of Wes Anderson films on Disney plus and starts off with 'The Darjeeling Limited' and what a joy he had watching.

Justin really loves how 'Blackish' is filling in the hole of his love for short form comedic series. He especially loved their dig at Alberta, Canada, a place very close to home for him. Like, really close.
A Quincy Jones documentary (Quincy) captures Justin's attention and imagination. A huge recommendation for anyone looking to discover one of the music businesses greatest.
'Nomadland' finally gets a viewing by one of us, Justin sits down with the Oscar winning film to see what he thinks of it.

FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLIDER: ONE WORLD. ONE PEOPLE. (*SPOILERS*)
This is it, every thing leads to this moment! If you want to hear what we think about the final episode, you'll have to listen. But we talk a heck of lot about a plethora of things, and find out how many times Hayden cried.

RACHAELS REVIEW: April has been and gone, so it's time for Rachael's April round up. You don't want to miss this one!
