    Scott Joplin

    Scott Joplin

During his life, Scott Joplin said that people would not appreciate his music until 50 years after his death. And he wasn’t wrong, though now he’s often called the king of ragtime writers.

From Chapel Hill’s The Cave: Ellis Dyson & The Shambles

North Carolina native Ellis Dyson (of the band Ellis Dyson & The Shambles) joined Six Count just before a performance at The Cave in Chapel Hill.

The show was the first gig on The Shambles’s short tour along the East Coast this October. The band is known for combining “old-time influences ranging from early New Orleans Jazz to Piedmont Murder Ballads.”

Now based in New Orleans, Ellis shares about the group’s origin story from 2015 as a banjo and saxophone duo in “The Southern Slice of Heaven,” the role of storytelling and theatrics in his music, and what’s next for the Shambles.

    Musicians:

    • Ellis Dyson (banjo, vocals)
    • Hunter Burgamy (guitar)
    • Norbert Farkas (upright bass)
    • Danny Abrams (saxophones, clarinet)
    • Zach Lange (trumpet)

Kwame Kwei-Armah on ‘Malcolm X,’ ‘Ragtime’ and ‘Hollywood Shuffle’

Kwame Kwei-Armah on ‘Malcolm X,’ ‘Ragtime’ and ‘Hollywood Shuffle’

A writer for stage and screen, an artistic director, and an actor, Kwame Kwei-Armah chose a truly poetic trio of Black men pushed to a righteous breaking point for today’s conversation. Which is a perfect parallel to his latest project, Breaking (which premiered at Sundance ‘22 under the title 892), starring John Boyega and based on the true story of Brian Brown-Easley.

Then, Jordan has one quick thing about forthcoming shorts anthology Give Me an A.

    Movies this week:

    Malcolm X (Spike Lee, 1992)

    Ragtime (Milos Forman, 1981)

    Hollywood Shuffle (Robert Townsend, 1987)

Episode 31 - Noah Engh - Uke In A Suit

In Episode 31, I talk with roots musician Noah Engh known for his distinct singing and ragtime and blues guitar and ukulele.  We discuss both Noah’s and Uke’s journies in music; we reminisce about our time in Hollywood and discuss a portion of blues and roots music history.  We also walk back through the pandemic and how Uke In A Suit came to exist, record a full-length album, and the pains of social media. Banjo, CO, also gets blessed with a live performance from “Uke In A Suit,” performing Blind Blake’s Too Time Blues.  In this week’s wrap-up, Crystal and I discuss Hollywood decapitations, hot dogs, the Iowa State Fair, the difference between a square and gerrymandering.  Now please enjoy as Noah and I “come correct” in our entertaining conversation.

Cocktails with Judy Kaye, Tony-laden Broadway Maiden

Cocktails with Judy Kaye, Tony-laden Broadway Maiden

Judy Kaye first came to prominence playing Lily Garland in the original Broadway production of On The 20th Century opposite John Cullum and Imogene Coca. In a career spanning five decades, she has played theaters and concert halls across the globe, in roles as diverse as Lucy Van Pelt, Rizzo, Maria Von Trapp, Mrs. Lovett, and Grandma Kurnitz in Lost in Yonkers. Recent Broadway appearances include Cinderella, Wicked, Anastasia and Diana. She played Eurydice in Orpheus In The Underworld, Musetta in La Boheme, and Lucy Lockett in The Beggar’s Opera at The Santa Fe Opera. She has twice received the Tony Award; first in 1988 for the role of the tempestuous opera diva Carlotta Giudicelli in The Phantom of the Opera, then again in 2012 for her performance as the high-flying Duchess Estonia Dulworth in Nice Work If You Can Get It. She has also twice received the Theater LA Ovation Award; for her work as Emma Goldman in Ragtime, and as the melodically challenged Florence Foster Jenkins in Souvenir, two roles she originated on Broadway. She has sung with symphony orchestras throughout the US and Europe, and twice at the White House. She is also the voice of Kinsey Millhone in the Sue Grafton Alphabet Mystery Series for Random House Audio. (Bio courtesy of Broadway.com)
