Season 3, Episode #28~ Back on the Roof

Season 3, Episode #28~ Back on the Roof

The good news is that the farm received rain, bad news is that there are still a couple leaky spots on the roof but hopefully Blind Hog and Acorn are getting them figured out. A few more forays onto the sheet metal might be needed, but they will see how the next rain is handled.

Call received from folks who got goats from SteelMeadow YEARS ago, have a few they would like to sell back to the farm.  Blind Hog and Acorn will go over there later this afternoon to check them out. These people take excellent care of their livestock, so no big worries with health issues.

Other than that, rain did fall. New weather station is wonderful. Cows are enjoying the fresh grass , the goats get to go into the north 40 for their browse and Sam is getting morning walks again.

Season 3, Episode #15~ What Day is It?

Season 3, Episode #15~ What Day is It?

Acorn has had four trips to Florida since February, and with only two nights at home between trips #3 and 4, she is more than a bit unsure of the calendar. But alas, farm life is definitely a routine that provides muscle memory, and back into the usual tasks she went.

Apple trees are loaded with blossoms, Asian pear also looked really good.  Garden and yard were both mowed.  Time to plant some veggies in the dirt!

Pi's bull calf is doing well.the other three cows will begin calving in another week and a half. Blind Hog set out the humming bird feeders and plopped some grape jelly in the special dish for the orioles.  He even hoisted Acorn up in the sky to hang the martin gourds and the purple martins are most appreciative.

Acorn needs to bake up some things for Blind Hog- a Bundt cake, brownies, cookie dough and a loaf of bread before she leaves again, like in 5 days.

    Episode #7~ About the Goats

    Episode #7~ About the Goats

The 21 day-long drought is about to break, Saraha dust and all. Acorn tells about the goats and the particulars of "working the kids." Find out how kids are managed and what happens when livestock misbehave.

Acorn will also talk about exotic delights- like elderflower cordial and syrup, and the joy of growing pineapples.

Raising Goats (Deborah Niemann, Thrifty Homesteader)

Deborah Niemann and her family moved to a farm on a creek in the middle of nowhere in 2002 to start growing their own food organically. She bought a couple of goats so she could make goat cheese. She had no idea that her decision would lead her down a path where she would ultimately teach thousands of people how to raise goats and make goat cheese and soap. In today’s episode, she’s here to share how she did it.

Today, Deborah is the author of three books, including Raising Goats Naturally, and she teaches sustainable agriculture courses online for the University of Massachusetts - Amherst. She also teaches her own popular online courses through her website, ThriftyHomesteader.com, where the focus is on living a cheaper, greener, happier, healthier life for everyone.
