The Kerala Story: 6 films that courted controversy

The Kerala Story: 6 films that courted controversy
Sudipto Sen’s controversial The Kerala Story releases on ZEE5 this week. The divisive film was initially marketed as a true story about 30,000 women forced to convert to Islam to join the militia group known as the Islamic State. However, the Supreme Court asked the filmmakers to add a disclaimer to highlight the fact the story is a work of fiction and that the information marketed was wildly inaccurate. As per official data, 100-200 women have joined the Islamic State from India, and the women from Kerala make up less than a quarter of this figure. The film has therefore come under intense scrutiny for its alleged attempts to malign communities. So for today’s List Hai Toh Hit Hai podcast, we take a look at six films that courted controversy.

Sasha Hallock - Why Has the Church Stifled Art?

In this episode Gage Hunt, John Iamaio, and special guest Sasha Hallock dive into the relationship between Christianity and art. Is Christian art always cheesy? Is there tension between art and Christian belief, the artist and the pulpit? How does a Christian worldview empower or inhibit engagement in art? Is Christian theology perhaps uniquely compatible with the posture of the artist? This episode explores these topics and more.

Sasha Hallock is an Iranian American artist living and working in New York City.
He did not grow up in a religious home, but became a Christian while studying, painting, and drawing in college. Alongside his work as a practicing artist, he works with Transform Arts in the Arts and Culture division of Cru, an international nonprofit.

    The Kerala Story': 32000

    41. The Rethinking Conversion Project

    41. The Rethinking Conversion Project

    Rethinking Scripture Podcast -

Episode 41: The Rethinking Conversion Project

April 25, 2022 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall

In today’s church culture, someone’s conversion is surrounded by certain expectations. Conversion is often understood as a “personal decision for Christ” that happens at a church alter, or maybe an outreach event. And when that decision is memorialized by some rendition of the “sinner’s prayer”, only then is it considered official. But what if our modern understanding of conversion isn’t at all like what the biblical text shows. Then we may need to “rethink conversion”.

Think Again: Changing Your Mind, Political-Religious Conversion, and the Emotional Life / Nichole Flores & Matt Croasmun

Think Again: Changing Your Mind, Political-Religious Conversion, and the Emotional Life / Nichole Flores & Matt Croasmun

Is it possible for anyone to change their mind anymore?

Matt Croasmun welcomes theologian and ethicist Nichole Flores (University of Virginia) onto the show for a discussion of changing our minds in political and religious contexts. They discuss the meaning of intellectual, political, and religious conversion; how aesthetic and emotional experience of beauty is often the key ingredient in changing one's mind and behavior; the value of open-mindedness and intellectual humility as well as the value of a firm sturdiness and courageous conviction; and the role of changing one's mind in a life worth living.

    About Nichole Flores

Nichole Flores is a social ethicist who is Assistant Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Virginia. She studies the constructive contributions of Catholic and Latinx theologies to notions of justice and aesthetics to the life of democracy. Her research in practical ethics addresses issues of democracy, migration, family, gender, economics (labor and consumption), race and ethnicity, and ecology.
