Kevin Kelly is the co-founder and Senior Maverick at Wired. He is also the co-chair of The Long Now Foundation, an organization that champions long-term thinking. Kevin Kelly has also written a number of best-selling books, including The Inevitable, an excellent book that guides you through the 12 technological imperatives that will shape the next 30 years and transform our lives. I highly recommend his newest book, Excellent Advice for Living: Wisdom I Wish I'd Known Earlier, which is a fantastic read chock-full of wisdom and insight.

This week, I’m showcasing the research of Dr. Angela Meyers Cotellessa. She studied and wrote a dissertation on polymathy. A polymath is an individual whose knowledge spans a significant number of subjects, known to draw on complex bodies of knowledge to solve specific problems. 

That’s long form for a Renaissance man or woman. 

It’s a subject I’m endlessly fascinated by. I believe cultivating more polymaths in our society can potentially bridge the gaps between seemingly different subjects. Those bridges are gateways to innovation. Innovation is the path forward for solving global crises:  climate change and human poverty being the most important. There are three things we can count on in life:  change, taxes, and death. 

Society has slowly let Ford’s assembly line model of specialization creep into all facets of society. We need to change our mindset from Ford’s assembly line to solve the macro problems on hand.
