    Comencheros

    Comencheros
This photo was taken at the Western national rendezvous in Grand Mesa, Colorado. This is the Comencheros. Who are the Comencheros? They were some of the meanest, nastiest people, men, and I don't think any of them were ever women. But in the West because what they did was they roamed through cities, towns, villages, anything. And when they did, they actually raped, pillaged, stole, burned and left nothing behind. If they came across a wagon train, they totally killed everyone, stole everything, loaded it onto their carts if they had them, or took their Wagon Train carts and used them. And they were a banned of whites, blacks, Indians, Mexicans and it was just whoever wanted to join them and be nasty mean and crazy.

Why Do We Do That?: Breaking Bread | David Lyon | 06/10/19 | Central

Why Do We Do That?: Breaking Bread | David Lyon | 06/10/19 | Central

At the end of His earthly life Jesus shared a last Passover supper with his closest friends. Filling it with fresh meaning and fulfilling all its prophetic dimensions, He thus inaugurated a new Lord’s Supper for all who follow Him. For us, this simple but sensational meal is an act of Remembrance, a time of Reflection and Recommitment, and a moment of Rendezvous with our Lord and Saviour.

    Episode 010: Pemmican

    Episode 010: Pemmican

In this episode, we make a batch of pemmican.  Pemmican was adopted from Native Americans by early trappers and explorers in North America.  In my opinion, it's just about the perfect backcountry food.  We talk about some history, specifically the voyageurs who paddled canoes from Montreal far into the interior of North America, bringing supplies to the trappers, and transporting bundles of furs back to Montreal.  We also get to talk about beavers (the primary target of most of the fur trapping of the time), how they impact the environment, how things have changed in their absence, and how they're being restored to parts of their former range.  Of course, we also make a batch of pemmican, so I'll tell you how I do that, and also why I think it's the perfect backcountry food.

    Rosetta

    Rosetta

Steins is Rosetta's first nominal scientific target. Based upon ground-based observations, it has been classified as an 'E-type' asteroid, composed mainly of silicates and basalts, but its properties are not known in detail. For these reasons, it has been selected as one of the two asteroids that Rosetta will study, from among those that were within reach of the mission. The study of asteroids is extremely important as they represent a sample of Solar System material at different stages of evolution – key to understanding the origin of our own planet and of our planetary neighbourhood. The spacecraft will rendezvous with the asteroid in the course of its first incursion into the asteroid belt, while on its way to comet 67/P Churyumov-Gerasimenko.

    Rosetta: rendezvous with an asteroid

    Rosetta: rendezvous with an asteroid

Asteroid Steins belongs to the rare, largely unknown intermediate E-class, very bright and probably with a much-weathered surface. Steins' orbit was only known from ground observations, so Rosetta is conducting Europe's first-ever optical tracking campaign, providing highly accurate position data to Flight Dynamics specialists who are planning a series of trajectory corrections for an accurate fly-by. For over a year, Rosetta scientists and leading asteroid experts have been planning this encounter, and all the probe's science instruments will be active at some point in the fly-by. Reception of the first images is expected at the European Space Operations Centre some two hours after the encounter on 5 September 2008.
