Ep. 7: Robert Dugoni - The World Played Chess

Ep. 7: Robert Dugoni - The World Played Chess

Page One, produced and hosted by author Holly Lynn Payne, celebrates the craft that goes into writing the first sentence, first paragraph and first page of your favorite books. The first page is often the most rewritten page of any book because it has to work so hard to do so much—hook the reader. We interview master storytellers on the struggles and stories behind the first page of their books.

    About the guest author:

Robert Dugoni is the critically acclaimed New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, and #1 Amazon Charts bestselling author of the Tracy Crosswhite police series, which is set in Seattle and has sold more than seven million books worldwide. His latest book, The World Played Chess was published by Lake Union Publishing in October.

He is also the author of the Charles Jenkins espionage series and the David Sloane series of legal thrillers. He has written several stand-alone books, including the nonfiction exposé The Cyanide Canary, which was a Washington Post best book of the year and he’s written three other stand alone novels The 7th Canon and Damage Control; The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell, for which he won an AudioFile Earphones Award for narration. Several of his novels have been optioned for movies and television series, most recently The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell.

Dugoni is the recipient of the Nancy Pearl Book Award for fiction and a three-time winner of the Friends of Mystery Spotted Owl Award for best novel set in the Pacific Northwest. He is a two-time finalist for the Thriller Awards and the Harper Lee Prize for Legal Fiction, and a finalist for the Silver Falchion Award for mystery and the Mystery Writers of America Edgar Awards.

Robert Dugoni’s books are sold in more than twenty-five countries and have been translated into more than thirty languages.

You can visit his website at www.robertdugonibooks.com, and follow him on Twitter @robertdugoni and on Facebook at www.facebook.com/authorrobertdugoni.

If you have a first page you’d like to submit to
the Page One Podcast, please do so here.

As an author and writing coach, I know that the first page of any book has to work so hard to do so much—hook the reader. So I thought to ask your favorite master storytellers how they do their magic to hook YOU.

After the first few episodes, it occurred to me that maybe someone listening might be curious how their first page sits with an audience, so I’m opening up Page One to any writer who wants to submit the first page of a book they’re currently writing.

If your page is chosen, you’ll be invited onto the show to read it and get live feedback from one of Page One’s master storytellers. Page One exists to inspire, celebrate and promote the work of both well-known and unknown creative talent.

You can listen to Page One on Apple podcasts, Spotify, Pandora, Stitcher and all your favorite podcast players.
    Hear past episodes.

Thank you for listening to the Page One Podcast, where master storytellers discuss the stories and struggles behind the critical first page of their books. If you liked this episode, please share it on social, leave a review on your favorite podcast players and tell your friends!

I hope you enjoy this labor of love as much as I love hosting, producing, and editing it. Please keep in touch by signing up to receive my newsletter at www.hollylynnpayne.com with the latest episodes each month. Delivered to your inbox with a smile.

Ep. 20 - Revision Change Rounds

Ep. 20 - Revision Change Rounds
Have you been wondering what exactly revision change rounds are? I’m going to walk you through exactly that, how the process tends to work and why you should take full advantage of them. This should help prepare you for feeling more confident about using your revisions while working with a designer. I also give some different tips on how to make the best of each revision you send to your designer. It is extremely important to know how many change rounds your designer allows and to have all your questions answered before signing a contract so you can make the most informed decisions possible. Come listen in and find out why you should always take full advantage of your revision change rounds and how to make the best of each revision you receive. If you could leave me a review, and rate the show, any and all feedback is so appreciated! If there is anything you’d like to hear in regards to branding, send me an email at orders@double8designstudio.com. This feedback helps me create content just for you in the upcoming seasons!

How To Let Go Of Your Expectations!

How To Let Go Of Your Expectations!

We were recently discussing the book The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People with our pusher community. In the book, it was suggested that you create everything twice. First in the mind and secondly in the physical world where you bring it to life.

I disagree with the perspective that you create things twice. Life is ever-changing and ever-evolving. It is a process of constant revision. Even after creating something in your mind and bring it to life in the physical world, you are constantly changing it.

Our society is so obsessed with arrival and fruition, forgetting that life is about revisions and evolving. We don’t pay attention to what we are becoming along the way. With every adversity that you overcome, you are adding tools to your belt. You constantly learn along the way. You have to know what you want and then be open to incorporate other people and learn new information so that then you can create something amazing.

    Key Takeaways

    • Creating everything twice first in the mind and then secondly in the physical world (04:09)
    • Life is ever-changing and evolving. It is a process of constant revisions (05:27)
    • There are two states of mind, the creation state and the problem state (07:50)
    • There is no arrival period in life, you are in a constant state of revision (10:27)
    • There's going be speed bumps along the way and then to revise again (12:42)
    • Collecting new information along the journey of life and gaining new perspectives (14:46)
    • Adaptability allows you to create something great (15:35)
    • Focusing on what you are becoming so that you don’t miss things along the way (21:06)
    • Knowing what you want and being open to collaboration and learning (27:00)
