The Future of Travel: Safari with Conservationists & Filmmakers Dereck and Beverly Joubert

The Future of Travel: Safari with Conservationists & Filmmakers Dereck and Beverly Joubert

This week on Passport to Everywhere, Melissa Biggs Bradley welcomes Dereck and Beverly Joubert as they discuss their passion and curiosity about the African ecosystem that inspired them to dedicate their lives to conservation. That commitment to protecting and sharing wildlife landscapes led them to become Emmy and Peabody award-winning filmmakers. Beverly and Dereck have produced over 30 nature documentaries for National Geographic, following the stories of endangered animals. The Jouberts have complimented their films with conservation campaigns such as the Big Cats Initiative and Rhinos Without Borders. After spending 40 years advocating for wildlife through film and philanthropy, they realized the untapped potential of tourism to sustain conservation efforts. In 2006, they began Great Plains Conservation, a hybrid activism and hospitality venture, where they use tourism to raise funds that allow them to continue their conservation efforts. They operate some of the most renowned lodges from Kenya to Botswana.

And this week on Travel Hacks, Melissa focuses on luggage forwarding, which can be advantageous during the busy holiday travel season to help get your gifts to your destination!

    We Can Win This. Thing.

    We Can Win This. Thing.
Ben Stein and cohost Judah Friedman discuss, the fact that Republicans truly have a chance to win both houses. But they need our support because they are not getting it from the GOP. The media was only able to cover for this regime and the Democrat party so much, its time for all who can to vote. Plus the brilliant mayor Adams of New York city advice for subway crime, dont use head sets and stare at your phones. This is what we are running against.

OS X World Version Update Conservation 2.0 with Ashwell Glasson

OS X World Version Update Conservation 2.0 with Ashwell Glasson
Today’s conversation with my guest Ashwell Glasson gives provides us with a view of the scale and scope of the challenges we are facing in securing biodiversity. What is being called for is an overhaul of the current models and mindsets driving conservation efforts in global landscapes under multiple pressures, including transnational wildlife crime at unprecedented levels. For the sake of frame of reference, our discussion is focused on rhino conservation as it holds markers of all that is changing and is at stake. The conversation takes multiple twists and turns as we unravel layers and identify the players toward a new world vision that can redefine the benchmark of health and wealth in passing the torch to new generations. Rather than a revision of what doesn’t work; solutions that resonate and engender cross-cultural participation at all levels of society, are augmented with new tool kits and skillsets for a holistic–earth one-health operating system.

Episode 157: Casting A Multiverse Sinister Six

With the impending release of Spider-Man: No Way Home this week, we decided to take a look at his most famous stable of villains, The Sinister Six.

We cast multiverse versions of six villains previously featured in at least one of the Spider-Man feature films and justify our reasoning for some slightly strange casting decisions that are sure to annoy fanbases and possibly general audiences too, we also try to establish when notable action heroes were still relevant.

Susan Scott & Bonné de Bod - STROOP, Journey Into The Rhino Horn War

Susan Scott & Bonné de Bod - STROOP, Journey Into The Rhino Horn War

Susan Scott and Bonné De Bod of Scott & De Bod Films are two passionate filmmakers based in South Africa. Susan and Bonné joined forces to bring to life their critically acclaimed documentary STROOP – journey into the rhino horn war. What started as a six-month project turned into a four-year filming odyssey as Susan and Bonné peeled back the complex layers of the rhino poaching trade, realising the scale and danger was far greater than they first imagined.

STROOP has since been officially selected for 40 film festivals, won 30 awards and has been broadcast and streamed in nearly 100 countries around the globe. We talk with Susan and Bonné about the blood, sweat and tears that went into bringing this powerful story to the world, learning the fascinating backstory behind the documentary. We touch on why rhino (and all wildlife) conservation should matter to everyone – in the words of these two incredible ladies; when we stand up, when we speak up, change can happen.

    In this episode we discuss:
    • Susan and Bonné’s respective backgrounds
    • An overview of the concerning rhino poaching statistics in South Africa
    • The multiple drivers of rhino poaching, following the trail from Africa to Asia
    • The potential strategies and reforms that could lead to poaching reductions
    • Dangers involved in documentary filmmaking – it’s more than meets the eye
    • The importance of remaining independent as filmmakers and journalists
    • Doing your homework to ensure financial support goes to credible organisations
    • Susan and Bonné’s latest documentary Kingdoms of Fire, Ice & Fairy Tales, and future projects
    • And so much more!
